So, my supervised draft only has 2 subtopics, while my actual WIT essay has 3 (+ a new one that I wasn't able to talk about during the supervised draft). I pretty much also revamped the way that I present the 2 old subtopics too so.....Is this okay? Because my draft is absolute crap lol

I am a student of Grade 11 and I have my final IOP due in about a month or so. I was browsing through a few previous forums on how to go on about doing your IOP but many of them seem to focus on books. As I'm still quire new to IB could someone please help me understand how one should do an IOP on english poetry? The poems we've done in class are that of Robert Frost Thanks in advance!

I am writing a restaurant review, and this sentence looked suspicious to me: The taste was luscious as it seemed to have “surreptitiously cowered†ingredients, as the chef claimed. Is this correct. Does it make sense?

Hi guys, I have to complete my Works in Translation first draft by Monday and after having written half of it I am a little worried on whether my topic of 'An analysis of different forms of conflict in Lorca's play Blood Wedding' is too broad or not worded correctly. I would be analysing the conflict between the families, conflict between ones' individual wishes versus societal laws and the conflict between nature and humankind. Can anyone assist me here?

Hello, Happy New Year. I have my mock exams in about five days and I feel quite confident in my exams as I know what to expect with the exception of English Paper 2. 2 weeks before the end of term we started preparing this paper which involved annotating 6 poems, 3 from Larkin and 3 from Keats (I know that for the real exam its around 40 poems from 3 authors). Due to time restriction we never did any practice papers and I do not know what to expect can anyone provide any guidance, it will be highly appreciated. I try to help people in areas which I am strong at: Maths SL, Chemistry HL, and Bio HL and I hope someone can help me out. Regards A student of IB

In a week I have my English orals, I was wondering if anyone has any helpful tips on how to prepare and what should be included in the discussion? For the larger texts I don't even know were to begin. I have a collection of 10 poems by Sylvia Plath and the two pieces of literature are King Lear and The Writing Life. I'm starting to freak out and any help would be vey much appreciated.

I am writing my WIT essay on "Family Ties" by Clarice Lispector, and the essay question is about how Lispector is able to show the challenges women face in her work My thesis is: Lispector is able to highlight the social bigotry that faces women, particularly against men. My subtopics are: Symbolism, characterization (the perspectives of the characters who perceive women to be inferior), and points of view of female characters. I feel, however, that my second and third subtopic may overlap. My second subtopic is focused on how other characters perceive women, and my third subtopic is focused on how the female characters perceive themselves and their societal expectatio…

The play I am doing for my WIT is Ghosts by Ibsen. I was wondering if this would be a good thesis for my WIT. Topic: How do ghosts that haunt Mrs. Alving affect the way she acts. The ghosts that haunt Mrs. Alving cause her to act differently than what was expected by a woman in the 19th century, which was when the play was written. I've talked to some of my friends and they tell me that I shouldn't be talking about the world and how it was like during the time it was written and focus more on the play. So would I need to change it?

English A1 Reflective Statement
by Guest Cannotlose- 5 replies

Hello. So I realized that I messed up two of my reflective statements. I never knew they were "reflective" on the interactive oral we had in class. We have a total of 6 reflective statements to write, 2 for each work in translation. I am wondering how many reflective statements are needed and will the 2 mess up's affect my grade. Thanks! EDIT: If you are wondering how I messed up on the past 2 reflective statements, I wrote them as literary essays rather than reflecting on my learning.

I've finished both my reflective statement and written assignment. My teacher's not been clear as to whether we have to have references and a bibliography or not. I haven't used any external references. Do I still have to reference the quotes from the work used ( A doll's House) and use other sites? Do I have to have a bibliogaphy? Please help, my final WA is due this week!

I've chosen Camus' The Stranger to write on for my WT2. I've decided to break the essay up into the relationships of minor characters and how they foil Meursault, but my teacher recommended I add technique analysis as well. What exactly is meant by technique analysis? Am I supposed to analyze Camus' purpose of introducing the characters at certain points? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I've been focusing on poems for so long I realized I'm actually really bad at doing oral commentaries for plays.. can I get a little help? (IOC coming soon too). With poems I do fairly well; I think the briefness really helps with making sure I didn't miss any points. But with plays (e.g. King Lear), I'm kind of confused as to what to talk about... Almost every time we discuss in class its about stage related things (e.g. the fact that the words and the actions of the actor might conflict, thus causing blah blah blah) but i can never find any literary devices other than diction...I feel like always talking about stage effects seems too informal, shouldn't this be an ana…

I need to use this as the story I'm writing on has the main character in a dilemma of not being asked out to a dance. Also, how would I say "looking attractive so guys will ask her out" without making it sound awkward? :/ Thanks guys.

HI. We are having our IOC's in a couple of weeks, and we are a bit puzzled over the extracts we have been working on. Our teacher said we will be given an extract from a pool of over 30 poems and the entire Peer Gynt book, which is about 300 pages. We are 16 people in the class, so the minimum required number of extracts is 8. We are given 30 + and entire book of 300 pages. What do you guys think? Is this normal?

Hey there, I was wondering if anyone was keen to help me review some of the work that I have done for my WIT and EE maybe? I'm not sure, am I allowed to do that? Just send some work to you, you tell me if I'm totally going on the completely wrong track or if I'm going pretty okay? Also, is there a risk that if I do this, it will show up when they check my work with turnitin? Or will anyone plagiarise my work...? Thank you

So I have just handed in my first 2000 word draft of my EE to finish off the year, and my teacher has said that I'm going strongly, all is good, I'm sitting on an A-B level so far. This was encouraging, until I read several examiner comments online saying that commonly done, overanalysed, dystopian books are not so likely to score highly, and supervisors should encourage their students to choose newer works to study. Heres the thing; I'm doing Brave New World, which is SUPER over analysed. It is my favourite book ever, I have so much to talk about, and I haven't gone and read any other essays or analysis just in case what they've said influences my analysis and evidence…

Hello everybody I haven't decided on a thesis or anything for my essay, but I was wondering if I am allowed to compare the society of today to a few aspects of the book I am planning on doing: Brave New World? So, something like, how does _______ parallel to modern society? .....but better haha All the essays I have read as examples only focus on the aspect and its significance within the book, but I feel like Brave New World discusses themes that are immensely relevant to today.... am I allowed to explore this in my essay? Thank you very much

Hi, I was wondering, regarding the WA, that many exemplars focus on a literary aspect like a symbol (such as heat, sun, windows, etc). But say I want to talk about the way the author uses religion in a book, will that allow me to gain a high mark if the essay was good? Because I just haven't seen themes being talked about when it comes to WAs. Also, since it's a part of the Part 1: Works in translation part of the course - is there an emphasis on the culture of the original language or something? Or do we just write the WA as if it's any other literary commentary, or must it have a cultural aspect in it too?

I never get a high mark in English and I'd thought I'd do a little preparing for an upcoming commentary, and I noticed how much I didn't know. Do you actually want to put focus on stage directions/props/asides/etc. when writing about a play? It just seems weird... (I'm getting like 4 in English by the way) I can write a commentary on a poem pretty well it's just that when we move to a play I almost forget everything. Do I talk about literary devices like alliteration/rhyme/figurative language still? The only thing I can think of to write when faced with a passage is the diction and devices that are common with poems...I'm missing so much and our teacher barely helps i…

Hello dear IB Survival. I really need help with English A SL and German A HL. Now, I am not failing, that's not the problem. I am aiming for 6/7 in both subjects, and here is where I need help. How do I do it? Hi, What is the best way to arrange comments during IOC (English Literature HL)? I am comfortable with going line by line and talk about it. But, my friends say it is better to pick few important items (major symbols, sound effects, theme etc) from the poem and talk about it as it will allow to include really good and important things into 8 minutes. What is your experience? Which method allows to make better marks?

Hello everyone! Just a little help would be appreciated as I am getting slightly desperate regarding my IOP. My current topic is an analysis of the 'dark room'. How it's significant to Mama Elena (possibly Tita as well but I feel its best to focus on one character) and its thematic implications (tradition and rules). I've heard a lot of people say that it's easier to get high grades in Lang&Lit, because it's less intense. Is that true? I talked to an IB student doing the Language and Literature course and she said that it focuses a lot on how different environmental factors (history, gender roles, etc) can influence literature. What do you analyze in the literature course, and does it go deeper than lang&lit?
