Paper 1 The purpose of this thread is to introduce you to Paper 1, the Source Paper. Whether you are taking Standard Level or a Higher Level examination makes no difference as, rather unusually, the sources and questions are the same for both examinations. The reason why I'm doing this is that I've came to notice there's a lot of people here in IBS which don't really understand what's required for this paper. There are three Prescribed Subjects assessed in Paper 1: Peacemaking, Peacekeeping – International Relations 1918–36 The Arab-Israeli Conflict 1945–79 Communism in Crisis 1976–8 For each Prescribed Subject there will usually be four written sources an…

I realized that the mathematics, physics and some other forums have a "help" topic for questions on that subject. So I decided it would be a good idea to start a similar topic to those for History! There is one problem: history (all of you who take history will understand) doesn't ever have any definite answers, except facts like specific years and names. Therefore, this thread would take a little different form: it would be primarily for helping formulate ideas/arguments, giving facts, etc. I'm History HL with a predicted 6/7 (my teacher refuses to tell me which grade he finally decided on). My prescribed topic is Communism in Crisis. If anyone needs any help, I'm will…

Hello IB Survival. My HL History teacher, who has taught IB history for years, created a general markband guide for marking history essays, and I felt I should share it with you all on here. This is by no means the official IB rubric, but rather a "guide" that you should aim for when writing your essays. IB Essay Markbands IB 1, IB 2 You do not understand the question. You do not have an argument. You might include some historical facts, but they are wrong or irrelevant. You do not show that you understand what else is going on at the same time (historical context). You do not talk about different interpretations of the topic. 1-2 Marks: Answers…

Reading, Notetaking and Knowing in History The following information was given to me by my HL History professor who is also an annual IB grader for History and it is also my own advice that I use all of the time fr my History HL class. These are the major tips my professor has given my classmates and I on creating class-notes and study-notes from books, historiography, etc. that are incredibly organized and the methods aim at reaching each type of persons study-style and note-taking style. I hope this is beneficial. It really helped me. Quick Tips to Utilize: Dividing notes Internal (Micro) vs. External (Macro) Capitalizing Arguments/ Marking Arguments in a Specific Way…

Now that I'm done with my History finals (which I've been panicking so much about for the last few months) I'm going to procrastinate by writing some tips on how to do well in IB History while trying not to repeat things that have been said in previous posts on the forum too much. The historical investigation I wrote my historical investigation on Ancient Rome and regret it somewhat, although I did find it interesting. Unless you are very much into history as a subject (and even then), doing your HI on a topic that somewhat interests you and is likely to be of some use in your exams is, I think, the best option. This is simply because having spent so much time on your HI,…

Tips on writing a good Historical Investigation Suggested word count for each section: A. Plan of Investigation: up to 150 words B. Summary of Evidence: 400-500 words C. Evaluation of Sources: 200-350 words D. Analysis: 600 - 800 words E. Conclusion: up to 200 words F. Bibliography: Not counted in the word count. Total word count: 2000 words maximum The above section-by-section word count is a suggested allocation of words only, and it is not necessary to stick strictly to it. However, the bulk of your word count should be in the Summary of Evidence and Analysis. While it is not necessary to choose a title within the syllabus you're studying, it would be useful if you do.…

'Examine' Questions
by Guest- 1 reply

Hey all, I have midyears coming up (on Monday, actually) and we got told our History question beforehand to ease us into it. We're doing the 'question' "Examine the successes and failures of collective security in the first ten years following the First World War" (paraphrased, I believe, as I can't remember it exactly). I'm relatively okay with all of it, but I was wondering, how do you make a thesis for this sort of statement? There's not much to, in a sense, be argued here, I assume, so what would we put into the introduction to make the entire essay relevant? I hope this makes sense! Any help is appreciated - thanks in advance!

'How did the Korean War affect the Cold war?'

So.... this was question we were asked to discuss in class..(I am a pre-IBer).. what i have with so far is that : The USA wanted to confront communism (indirectly combat USSR). Doing this invited the USSR in this civil war which later became part of the cold war The Truman Doctrine - The USA helping countries that were being subjugated / oppressed by communism. There is nothing apart from those two that I can think of. If this thread has already been started somewhere else, accept my apologies. Thank you in advance!

Hello! We've recently been given "Account for the structure of the Nazi state" as an essay question to prepare, and I'm not sure how to structure the essay. I'm not asking for you to structure it for me - rather on what an "account for" question is asking for. I'm more used to "to what extent"-style questions, so I'm a bit confused. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I wanted an opinion outside my school about the validity of my research question. I initially wanted to go with "To what extent were women in the US allowed to aid the army during World War II?" as my research question but due to no sources whatsoever I came to the conclusion that I should change it and I came up with "To what extent was Stalin’s five year plan successful during 1928 to 1932?". Can I use this research question? (I take history HL)

Hello, I am working on my HL IA. I am essentially examining the causes and effects of the Soviet-Cuban Alliance from 1959-1991. I am analyzing the role of the US foreign policy and how it pushed Cuba towards the USSR and I will also mention how the Cuban reliance on the USSR was detrimental following the Soviet Union's collapse in the early 1990's. I am wondering if anyone happens to know where I would be able to find any primary source documents that relate to my topic. If you happen to know where I can find any primary docs relating to US Embargo, Cuban Revolution, Communism in Cuba, Overthrow of US economic dominance, Nationalization of US Firms, USSR Patronage, …

So I received my first ever written History essay this year, the question as I remembered were phrased as "What factors contributed to Hitler's rise to power in 1933". I didn't do as well as I expected myself to. I was expecting myself to get around 13-15/20 instead I got 11/20, is this a good or bad thing?

Before I get into the IB, I did IGCSE's and I took the extended exam scoring a B" — the equivalent of a 6 approximately. Anyways, I am really passionate about history. I work so hard, regularly revise and do my homework. Most of the content we've covered so far is familiar with me and so I didn't face much difficulty. In November of 2015, each student was given a Progress Report about how we're doing so far. At our school, they have this "0.5" system where it's not just a solid "6" but could be an "6.5", for example. I got a 4.5 grade and to be honest I was disappointed. My mother and I met with the teacher and talked to him about it in the parent-student-teacher eve…

I have decided to do my investigation on North Korea, particularly about Kim Ill Sung, in conjunction with my revision on communism in crisis. Do you think this topic is over-used and cliched? Okay, just a fast question. What does the IB mean by "regions"? Or, more specifically, I have been looking at some past questions for the Cold War and the Single-Party States, and many questions ask that you discuss at least two countries from two different regions. What does this mean exactly? For instance, I would be inclined to discuss the rules of Stalin and Hitler, because these are the ones I know best, but are Germany and Russia in the same "region"? Any help is appreciated.

Hi, everybody, I just came up with a thesis question for my historical investigation. That is "was the new established Turkish Republic a democracy?" My problem is, I'm not so sure if it sounds more ideological than scientific. But I have a variety of resources, both historical texts such as memoirs of relevant people, and history books. Soo what would you propose? Do you think is it okay? Maybe I am having a hard time because in a non-IB school in Turkey I would get a zero from a homework with such a title.

I took a whole journey from document to document to finally get the code of the specific report I'm looking for for my Historical Investigation. It's a report of the commission sent to se about the Ã…land Islands case in 1921 by the League of Nations. Hello, so I am interested in exploring some parts of American history with this internal assessment. I have the following ideas: 1. Integrating African Americans into Caucasian schools in the USA –Compare what the situation was in a Southern State to a Northern State (perhaps Arkansas vs New York?) 2. Vietnam War (and Code Orange) 3. Portrayal of Native Americans in US media in the 1950s 4. McCarthyism I know the last three ideas are still very vague. I was thinking of choosing the first idea, could a compare and contrast answer work with this? Which idea do you prefer best and do you have any advice? plus how advanced/complex do these questions have…

Additionally, I am from the US, and I am having trouble finding books about him. I know for a fact that there are tons out there, but I cant find any. Hey everybody, So i am doing my history IA on ''How was the Hitler Youth an organization vital for the indoctrination of German youth'' not a very original topic but a very interesting one for me personally. To get to the point, i am using ''Heil HItler: Confessions of a Hitler Youth'' as a source for evaluation in part C. Basically the source is a short film composed from an interview of Alfons Heck (a former member of the HItler youth, he also has written a book on the subject) who talks about his days of being a member in the HItler Youth and how succesful it was in indoctrinating him. My question is, Is this a primary source? It states only the ideas of Alfons HEck …
