Tips on writing a good Historical Investigation Suggested word count for each section: A. Plan of Investigation: up to 150 words B. Summary of Evidence: 400-500 words C. Evaluation of Sources: 200-350 words D. Analysis: 600 - 800 words E. Conclusion: up to 200 words F. Bibliography: Not counted in the word count. Total word count: 2000 words maximum The above section-by-section word count is a suggested allocation of words only, and it is not necessary to stick strictly to it. However, the bulk of your word count should be in the Summary of Evidence and Analysis. While it is not necessary to choose a title within the syllabus you're studying, it would be useful if you do.…

Both in question 3 in Paper 1 and in Section C in the Internal Assessment, you will be asked to evaluate sources for their Origins, Purpose, Values and Limitations. Here are some questions you should be asking yourself when you are faced with a particular type of source:

Paper 1 The purpose of this thread is to introduce you to Paper 1, the Source Paper. Whether you are taking Standard Level or a Higher Level examination makes no difference as, rather unusually, the sources and questions are the same for both examinations. The reason why I'm doing this is that I've came to notice there's a lot of people here in IBS which don't really understand what's required for this paper. There are three Prescribed Subjects assessed in Paper 1: Peacemaking, Peacekeeping – International Relations 1918–36 The Arab-Israeli Conflict 1945–79 Communism in Crisis 1976–8 For each Prescribed Subject there will usually be four written sources an…

Now that I'm done with my History finals (which I've been panicking so much about for the last few months) I'm going to procrastinate by writing some tips on how to do well in IB History while trying not to repeat things that have been said in previous posts on the forum too much. The historical investigation I wrote my historical investigation on Ancient Rome and regret it somewhat, although I did find it interesting. Unless you are very much into history as a subject (and even then), doing your HI on a topic that somewhat interests you and is likely to be of some use in your exams is, I think, the best option. This is simply because having spent so much time on your HI,…

Hello IB Survival. My HL History teacher, who has taught IB history for years, created a general markband guide for marking history essays, and I felt I should share it with you all on here. This is by no means the official IB rubric, but rather a "guide" that you should aim for when writing your essays. IB Essay Markbands IB 1, IB 2 You do not understand the question. You do not have an argument. You might include some historical facts, but they are wrong or irrelevant. You do not show that you understand what else is going on at the same time (historical context). You do not talk about different interpretations of the topic. 1-2 Marks: Answers…

I realized that the mathematics, physics and some other forums have a "help" topic for questions on that subject. So I decided it would be a good idea to start a similar topic to those for History! There is one problem: history (all of you who take history will understand) doesn't ever have any definite answers, except facts like specific years and names. Therefore, this thread would take a little different form: it would be primarily for helping formulate ideas/arguments, giving facts, etc. I'm History HL with a predicted 6/7 (my teacher refuses to tell me which grade he finally decided on). My prescribed topic is Communism in Crisis. If anyone needs any help, I'm will…

Reading, Notetaking and Knowing in History The following information was given to me by my HL History professor who is also an annual IB grader for History and it is also my own advice that I use all of the time fr my History HL class. These are the major tips my professor has given my classmates and I on creating class-notes and study-notes from books, historiography, etc. that are incredibly organized and the methods aim at reaching each type of persons study-style and note-taking style. I hope this is beneficial. It really helped me. Quick Tips to Utilize: Dividing notes Internal (Micro) vs. External (Macro) Capitalizing Arguments/ Marking Arguments in a Specific Way…

Could you share the topic of your History IA (and your grade if you already have it) ? This could be helpful for many! Do you have any tips about choosing a topic? I was planning on choosing a topic related to what we've learned in class because it may help me study for the exams. Do you recommend this? Do you recommend a topic related to Ancient History or to Modern History? Too bad nobody answered Well anyways I want to share the process I went when deciding a history topic First I wanted to do something related to witch hunting: ¿What factors caused the young women to be acused of being witches and imprisoned in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and how was this …

Lots of people seem to have trouble with the Causes of the Spanish Civil War, so as revision for my exam tomorrow I'm gonna make it simple through a guide, containing all of the essay factors! To start, the political spectrum: Right Wing - Nationalists. Includes Army, Church, landowners, monarchists, CEDA, and Franco's Fascist Party, Falange. Left Wing - Republicans. Includes socialists, communists, anarchists, trade unionists and moderate liberals. The Long-Term causes include Socio-Economic, Army and Church, and political system/factors. These led to a desire for change, which manifests itself in the short term cause of the Second Republic 1931-1936. This led to polaris…

Ok, I'm trying out a few different topics but i need to know if I could get a good paper out of discussing/investigating the origin of Hitler's hate for the Jews. I know there are many different takes on this but do any of you think it'd be okay? If not, any suggestions? I'm trying to go more on the path of the Holocaust.

Hey people! I'm only in the first year of IB, but our History teacher is making us do our IAs at the end of this term, so that it'll be one less IA next year. But, I can't seem to find any sample IAs that are for the new syllabus and my teacher only gave us old ones too... Does anyone know where I could find one? The content doesn't really matter, I just don't have a clue how to format it, like visually so it would be nice to see what one looks like. Thanks for the help

Hi! I'm about to start writing my historical investigation and I've chosen to focus on the Cuban Missile Crisis (we've had it in class) . I desperately need help to find an essay question I've thought about something along the lines of: What consequences did the Cuban Missile Crisis have on the USA's foreign policy? <- I imagine this is the most overdone topic EVER, but I seriously cannot think of anything else, and I'd prefer to write about something that I can use later (We've read about the Cold War (you know, the fancy purplish book)) So do any of you have any good suggestion or how you could alternate the question to be narrower? I am doing my History IA and I can't find any samples for the new format. I'm having trouble writing my IA because although I understand what the IB wants in terms of 'sections' (identification and evaluation of sources, Investigation and Reflection) I don't understand if I have to divide my IA in those specific sections or if it's something that my IA must have, even if it's not divided. If anyone has a good example of this new format I would really appreciate it!

Hey guys! So on Wednesday I have an in-class compare and contrast essay in History, to do with Mengistu of Ethiopia and either Mao or Hitler. I know it's a key component of the paper 2, but I also want to do well as it will finally give me that push up to a 6 with a really strict, demanding teacher. I thought I was ready but in class today we did some review for it and I remembered, I SUCK AT COMPARE AND CONTRAST! So any documents, tips, rules from you guys would help. I'm going into HL and I really need to make an impression on a teacher for the class I care a lot for. I'm not sure what you can do here, but either upload it here or send to _________ and then post on here…

I'm doing my Part D for the IA, the Analysis, right now, and I am wondering what are some things that will be good to include as well as mistakes that people tend to commit. I know I should be doing the question in historical context, different views, and analysis of evidence. Another question I have is, how exactly do you analyze the evidence? Thanks!

Our teacher demands we have our research question ready but I can't come up with anything good. I'm leaning towards the vietnam war since I have alot of interest in it and have done alot of research on it but the only question I can come up with why and how did the us get involved. Ontop of my lack on interest for that particular question I don't think it would make for a good investigation. The major problem here is coming up with a question that is 'narrow' or specific enough to do an investigation on while still being an interesting and good topic. Need help, Thanks.

How hard is History at higher level? I'm quite a good history student and have always gotten A's in it, but the fact that a ridiculously small amount of students ever score a 7 in history HL (for May 2014 it was only 2%) freaks me out a bit. How difficult it is, and how heavy is the workload? If you were to give it a ranking out of 10 for difficulty (with 1 being easy as hell and 10 being the worst thing you've ever done), what would you give it?

Hello there, Firstly I'd just like to say, I'm pretty new to this site so please don't shoot me down too hard if I've posted this in the wrong place, or haven't seen a thread that already has this information, but I'm sort of panicking and need information quickly! What exactly should I put in my evaluation of sources? Should I include any information from the sources themselves? I'm using a document (the Marshall Plan speech) and a recent analytical/narrative book. My teachers keep telling us not to talk about "superficial evaluation", so I'm beginning to really wonder if what I've written is analytical or relevant enough! If someone could just give me points further tha…

I'm in the middle of my review for the exams in May. While looking over ways to review for IB History HL Paper 2, I always find people that state that there are one or two mandatory question types that come up on every exam. Unfortunately, no one ever expands on these questions. I'm assuming the the causes, nature, and results of both World Wars is one of those 'must-know' topics that always comes up. Does anyone no any other ones? Don't have access to recent past papers. Cheers in advance Oh and PS. How the heck do I motivate myself to work after getting acceptances from all these colleges? :/

So I have an essay to do on WW2 (900 words) but i'm not sure if my structure is good. I'm not finished yet but Could anyone give me tips ? In what ways, and to what extent, was the Second World War "total war"? A total war is a conflict where nearly all the resources of a society are employed to defeat an opponent. The Second World War can be considered as the quintessential modern total war both by its physical and ideological scale. This essay will discuss the different ways by which the 1939-1942 war can be qualified as a total war. The Second World War was, above all, a war of ideas. The countries involved majorly used political relations and economical re…

I think we're all aware of how this question goes, usually something like "Using the sources and your own knowledge...." It's in the question itself, so obviously, using your own knowledge from different sources is important. I usually use my knowledge on specific treaties and events, but I have never actually used "specific" information, like the specific numbers I use for Paper 2, because, other than those on the economic situation, I feel like there aren't many. And I also don't tend to use historiography for that part, or at least it isn't a priority to me because it isn't specifically mentioned in the mark scheme. Am I doing it wrong? Should I do otherwise? What's yo…

Hi, So IAs are coming up, and I really need to choose a topic. I've come up with a few already, like I'm really interested in feminism, and I was thinking perhaps something to do with Barbies. I've spoken with my supervisor already, but he says that I should give him a more focused topic idea. I was thinking about how Barbies have evolved from back then to now, and how Barbie represents her own woman who has taken up these fantastic roles and jobs that woman today still haven't been able to do. (President) But it's not exactly a question, and I'm not really connecting the dots here. If this isn't a solid enough idea, I think I'd do something along the lines of "How has W…

Okay, so some background, I'm currently in IB History I, halfway through, and my teacher has decided it is time for us to start using historiography in our essays. I understand the basics of historiography (the perspectives of notable historians, right? I think) but I'm not quite sure how to implement it Let's say I'm writing an essay on some war and its causes. Should I present the causes and support and then say how that connects to a historian's view? "Thus, War X was caused by Factor A, Factor B, and Factor C. This is supported by the argument of historian Y, who..." and etc. Or should I base my initial argument around the conflicting view of historians? "Though Histo…

Hey guys, I'm in my third year of high school and course registrations are coming up soon for me. I am unable to decide whether to take SL or HL history (20th century topics.) My teacher says that they are pretty much the same in my school, that the SL and HL people are in the same classes and the only difference is that HL as the Paper 3, but I'm not entirely convinced. My question is, what differences between SL and HL are there besides the Paper 3 exam? For that paper 3 I took History of the Americas this year so I don't think I would be studying too much extra for that. History HL would be my 4th HL class.
