I'm not sure about you, but I find doing the uncertainty calculations a giant waste of time. Soo, I quickly coded an application to automate it for you http://timtamshiz.co.cc/ http://ibsurvival.com/uncertainties/ It's pretty straight forward to use, but I'll eventually be modifying it to let you use whole formulas Anyway, enjoy, and if you have any requests for features either PM me or reply here . edit: Oh awesome, it got stuck, thanks to whoever did that. I'll let you guys know when I update it.

There’s been multitudes of new threads discussing one science vs another. HL vs SL, this vs that, no one knows what science to do because one’s easier than the other, or one has more interesting concepts to you, yada yada. Hopefully this thread will help those who are choosing choose the science they want to do or even need to do and what level they should probably do it on. It’s a long read but if you have a general idea of what you want to do already you can always just skip to those parts I’ll also discuss some of the combos people like to do since I’ve taken all 3 sciences, Chem and Bio at HL too so this should hopefully be rather thorough. Before the descriptions…

Today we had a planning lab in Biology on enzymes and how they are affected by temperature changes. Took 3 hours to do, the teacher helped everyone out and we all followed the method to the letter. Yet none of our results fit the hypothesis that we all knew to be true (i.e. enzymes above 40 degrees are denatured and don't break starch down, same thing for enzymes at 0 degrees). Seeing as we were all pissed off at having wasted 3 hours for nothing, and there having been no real reason for the failure (the controls worked when we tested them before starting and the amylase was fresh, out teacher even prepared it twice for us), our teacher gave us free rein to forge our r…

Hi guys, I was just wondering when to know when the data you have collected experimentally is normally distributed. Is there a method that exists, to show whether it is in Gaussian Distribution? EDIT: I have 4 groups , each with 5 trials -- if that helps at all In my IA i want to use the t-test, however the condition is that the data has to be normally distributed, soo I don't know where to go Thanks!

Hi all, I am currently writing a Design Lab for a Physics Lab Report. The aim of the task is to dip a resistor in a calorimeter filled with Deionized Water and measure the heat energy by the temperature rise in the water. The issue I am facing is whether I can actually obtain Deionized Water. Is it possible to make Deionized water in a school lab? If not, are there any alternative methods anyone could suggest to measure the heat energy of a resistor? Are there any alternatives to water, that I could use in the calorimeter? I need this information before Sunday!!!! Thanks in advance!

Hi so im in grade 10 right now and I have to pick my courses for IB soon. I want to attend university somewhere in the UK (for medicine) and I was looking at the requirements and they require you to take HL bio and HL chem. (I'm taking grade 11 physics next semester) My school discourages taking 2 HL sciences because they said it would be too hard How hard is it? Is it manageable? Would it be possible to get a level 6 or 7 in the course? (I have a 90% in science right now) Do you regret taking it? Thanks!!!

So I have been thinking about applying for IB and I really would like to do it. I want to be a dentist or get into med school after I am done with high school. Currently I am in grade 10 and I have registered for only gr 11/12 CERTIFICATE. I dont want to do diploma because it involves commiting so much..CAS, EE, etc and I would rather focus on doing IB on the subjects I enjoy. I applied for: HL biology HL chem HL pyschology (I can only take 3 or less HL subjects). Right now I'm having a lot of trouble with the courses I chose.. mainly everyone is telling me doing 2 HL sciences is suicide (or something along those lines) but I do enjoy science, I'm just nervous with everyo…

Okay so I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm doing the IB diploma next year and I've decided to do 2 sciences since Im interested in possibly going to UK unis. So I took IB Chemistry HL and IB Biology HL. So here's the problem, I can do both sciences in year 1, but not in year 2. My coordinator said that taking both sciences might not happen since both of the sciences are during the same hour and there might not be enough students signed up for it. Should I stick to 2 sciences or take IB psychology as a 6th subject ? Oh and I'm new to this site.

As I was roaming through the internet one day, I came across a news article saying that there will be a syllabi change for IB group 4 in 2014, that is, the coming students next year (also the ones taking their exams in 2016). Since I fall under this list, I would really like to know whether that this information is true or not. However, another day I came across the Wikipedia page (I know I know, Wikipedia is not always reliable, but it's there, there's a possibility, even if it is really small, that the information might be true) saying that the syllabi don't change until the start of the school year 2016. I am really confused now. Please enlighten me whether if the s…

Im taking ib next year and im thinking of applying for psychology or neuroscience. Which one will be more helpful?? Although i know that 2science hl is a must for neuroscience. However, i currently get better grades and social science subjects than experimental sciences. Which subject choices have a higher possibility of getting better marks in general? Economics. Psychology and Biology as HL or biology. chemistry and Geography as HL with math eng a langit and spanish b as SL Thank you

OK, so I've chosen 3 HL sciences (Bio, Physic, Chem) along with English SL, Math SL, History SL, and Spanish SL. Now, you may have noticed I would need another higher in order to obtain my diploma. Hence why I'm here. For starters, Spanish and History cannot coexist in the timetable in my school, meaning I would need to change Spanish to French. Here I could kill two birds with one stone by taking French B HL. I could also take take French AB Initio and take English HL, however I like my English teacher so I'd rather not. My final option is taking one of the sciences SL and rearranging myself from that point. What do you guys recommend?

I may be doing 2-3 sciences for sophomore year. Current sophomore schedule: Algebra 2/Precalc honors Pre IB English 10 Ap U.S Gov and Politics Ap Physics 1 Ap Biology (a class for Juniors and seniors, but I have done really well in Biology Honors, so I am able to take it) Chemistry honors (will hopefully help with Ap Biology) Pre IB Spanish 3 (only class that is not weighted) Yup.... There is no off period for me, so this will be a tough schedule. I am also doing sophomore soccer, and plenty of extracurricular since I want to go into an ivy school. I have a passion for the sciences, but is this schedule a bit too hard…

Hi For my Biology IA Lab report i did the pill bug expiration with two debris dishes. I used two different yellow and blue light. I cant come up with a good research question. My last one was Research Question: Between the light rays of blue and yellow, what is the pill bug favorite light color according to their living needs. In this lab we had to record the number of pill bugs present in each dish every 30 second and see which side do they prefer. They usually want danker sides and hate light and heat in general because light damages their breathing systems.

Hi there, I have an absolute error question, regarding a chemistry lab report: I used a spectrophotometer which gives the absorbace with three decimal places (i.e. 1.234). The absolute error for this apparatus would be + 0.001 or half the last unit measurable, therefore + 0.0005? Thank you!

I was informed of my IA grades yesterday, and my motivation completely died, to be honest. I didn't think I was doing that badly, but I was apparently wrong. Anyway, I'm doing Chemistry SL and my IA score before moderation is 32 points. I guess this could be raised or lowered a point or two, but I don't count on it. As I understand it, this is a weak 6 when converted to the final scale. This disappoints me very much, because I've been aiming for a 7 now that I'm doing it at SL. But I guess this is what I get for trying to do too much in IB1... So my question is whether it is worth to still study ambitiously. Would I have to have perfect scores on every paper in May …

Ok i am just wondering the significance of a lab for a group 4 science subject because atm, my best mark for my physics lab is: Design- C,C,C, Data Collection- C,P,C Conclusion- P, P, P (=.=;; and i have 1 more and it is the last lab writeup for the year, so i'm wondering if i end up getting Design- C,C,C, Data Collection- C,P,C Conclusion- C,C,C how much of an effect will my P,P,P in conclusion affect my IB mark? oh yea also, how much of a role does a lab play in the final ib mark? For ex, can i have a 5 for my lab and get a 7 on my exam and come out with a 7 overall?

Hey, Does anyone know whats an antenna complex? I mean - is it just an abstract term describing the particular arrangement of the pigments inside a photosystem or is it that photosystems are special kinds of antenna complexes or maybe it is the name for each pigment connected by a pigment-binding protein. I cant get that although, and I've been searching for some time now

Hey guys! How's IB Prep going? What I'd Like to know is what way to covering the entirety of our fat IB text books that you are going to utilize before the final exams. Well so far I'm thinking read each chapter and make notes, but I'm looking at other ways since notes never come out perfect and you need to revisit the chapter at times and the notes just don't do the trick for you. Oh, my subs are HL: Chem, Bio and SL: Phy. So please, help me out, Thank you! For all you know this might help you too!

So, recently we've been introduced and given a summary of the DP program. We have been looking though the classes to take next year when we start DP, and I'm having a little trouble choosing which science I should go into for HL. The classes I can take are as follows (In order of preference). Biology: I like Bio, It can be really boring on occasion; I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. Chemistry: Chemistry is ok... The teacher I had for it (who most likely will be next years HL Chemistry teacher) made it very boring. I never really had much motivation for that class. I did well, but I didn't really grasp some of the important parts, like balancing equations. Phys…

Hi everyone, im starting the dp next year and ive received some summer work from my school. Some of the stuff seems a bit confusing and stuff ive never really covered in last years science class like drawing the strucutres of different molecules like glucose, glycerin, etc and describing how monosaccharide (glucose) is converted to a disaccharide (maltose). (Honestly, I dont even know what that means lol). Ive received my Bio and Chem textbooks early and I have been reviewing some content before school starts in September. What are some useful stuff that should be mastered and learned before someone starts in DP? Thank you.

Since I'm taking both chemistry and biology, I get confused on whether I should treat the uncertainties in the same way. In bio lab reports, should uncertainty be propagated too? Or do we only put uncertainties in tables and graphs? And do we take the smallest division of a lets say the cylinder used? Or one tenth of the smallest division like we do in chemistry?

I have HL bio and Chem. For next year, we have 2 free slots for classes. I have noticed a trend that most of the exams for HL group 4 subjects, overlap the material. Physics material usually is involved on the Chem exam, and some will go as far as to say they couldn't have solved the chem problem without the help of their physics class. My 2 class options: Environmental Science AP or Physics Honors/traditional/AP (not sure what the school will decide to do). I already took physics in pre-IB: and we only touched upon vectors and projectile motion. It was more conceptual, rather than problem solving. Should I even waste my time to go as far as taking onlin…

Bio HL or Chem HL?

I'm in my first year of IB and I'm changing schools. Currently I'm doing both HL chem and HL bio, but at my new school I get the option of choosing one of the two. I'm a student who genuinely dislikes the sciences and you might wonder why I'm doing two of them currently and that's because I had no other choice. Anyways, I just thought it would be helpful to hear other people's opinions on this. Basically, a. which is easier? b. which is more suited for a humanities person? To help steer your recommendations I think it's useful to know I've only taken a year of each before starting the IB programme. Bio I did in ninth grade but had a really good teacher and cover…

Hello fellow sufferers, right now I am facing the GREATEST dilemma. I am starting the IB programme in September and have thankfully already decided on my SL subjects (World Arts and Cultures, Greek, English A Lang. & Lit.). I have also decided to take Math HL and Physics HL (both of them are requirements for undergraduates wanting to study Physics or Engineering). So now I have to decide on whether to choose Biology or Computer Sciences on HL. My parents do everything they can to get me to choose Bio, although both of them know I would be better in C.S. I'm having a difficult time deciding between Biology HL and Chemistry HL. I have the opportunity to take both, both at HL or one at HL and the other at SL. I'm fairly well at Chemistry; it seems simple. However, Biology would probably be better suited for what I plan to study at uni (Psychology with possible intent for grad school). From what I heard, Chemistry is mostly mathematics while Biology is memorization. Is there anyone who could give a full comparison of the two subjects, preferably someone who took both or are in the process in taking both? Thanks.
