I'm not sure about you, but I find doing the uncertainty calculations a giant waste of time. Soo, I quickly coded an application to automate it for you http://timtamshiz.co.cc/ http://ibsurvival.com/uncertainties/ It's pretty straight forward to use, but I'll eventually be modifying it to let you use whole formulas Anyway, enjoy, and if you have any requests for features either PM me or reply here . edit: Oh awesome, it got stuck, thanks to whoever did that. I'll let you guys know when I update it.

There’s been multitudes of new threads discussing one science vs another. HL vs SL, this vs that, no one knows what science to do because one’s easier than the other, or one has more interesting concepts to you, yada yada. Hopefully this thread will help those who are choosing choose the science they want to do or even need to do and what level they should probably do it on. It’s a long read but if you have a general idea of what you want to do already you can always just skip to those parts I’ll also discuss some of the combos people like to do since I’ve taken all 3 sciences, Chem and Bio at HL too so this should hopefully be rather thorough. Before the descriptions…

Hi guys, I know this will be unlikely. But does anyone have copies of the new syllabuses for 2016 in Physics and Chemistry, As you all know, the syllabus is going to be changed. The syllabuses were released to teachers in december of 2016, but I want to have a look at their content for some personal reasons. So if anyone has a copy of the syllabuses, please send them to me! You can attach them as files in your replies or send an email to n_______ Thanks.

Dear all, At our school we have been panicking about the supposed page limit for the internal assessments. It's a new requirement apparently, but tables and graphs take up way too much space don't you agree? Please let us know if this has been the case for you as well! Pretty much all the IB students at my school are panicking! Thanks!

Hey everyone, Does anyone have an idea what the grade boundaries for the Biology IA are. IB Session: 2016/17 There is a total of 24 points, but no one seems to know what the boundaries are, eg. How many points are required for a Level 7, Level 6 etc. Thanks a lot!!

Hmm, as i was revising my lab, i was wondering if the font and the size mattered in Bio or Chem labs. Well, my lab isn't in the standard font fomat known as "times new roman" but i'm sure there won't be any trouble to read. I just got really scared because i thought i might get marks off for not being "formal"

Okay so I'm preparing for a giant crapstorm of the likes I've never seen before. I've signed up for 7 subjects against everyone's advice. So I'm basically trying to make everything easier for me on the other side of the spectrum so I don't commit suicide somewhere along the path. I have A*s in all 3 IGCSE sciences. So assuming I'm equally good in ALL THREE sciences, which is the easiest. At Standard Level of course. I am looking at: 1. Difficulty of getting a 7 in course 2. Difficulty and complexity of IAs 3. Amount of practical work and experiments (I freaking suck at those, especially writing them up) 4. Amount of homework that will need to be set/ anticipated to be set…

I'm in bio HL and I'm wondering about labs. I am getting the impression that not all of them get sent in to IB - does this mean that if I do really poorly on a few of them, it won't negatively affect my mark (unless my teacher, for some reason, sends it in)? If not all labs get used for my IB mark then how many does my teacher need to send in? Is it different for SL? I'm not very clear about this and I'm kind of worried that the bad labs I did at the beginning of last year are going to drag my mark down. Also I'm a little puzzled because I hadn't heard of the group 4 project until this year. Is it a major component of IB? Does it affect your internal assessment ma…

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew the word limit (if there is one) for chemistry SL IAs. Mine both reached the 4000 word mark, and I'm wondering if I should be worried (both longer than my EE! lol). A classmate of mine even hit 6000 words on one of his.

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me how Physics SL is different to doing Physics HL. Obviouly HL is a lot harder, but how much harder? How much more effort does Physics HL need in comparison to SL? What are the benefits of doing Physics HL than doing SL? I want to do Physics next year but I'm not sure which level to chose. I usuall get 6's in Physics with a 7 popping up every known and then. Thanks!

Hi, I was wondering if someone here could tell me how to write a lab report from bio and chem well? I have several formats (ways of writing the lab reports) to follow, but they're different from each other and I'm not sure which pattern I should follow when writing these. So, I was wondering maybe someone here who has experience in this field could help me out? If there's anyone here who knows someone from their school who got a 6 or 7 on their lab reports, could you please tell me what pattern he/she followed? Also, could someone explain how does this grading system for lab reports function (e.g. when writing a Design lab report, is it necessary to write the whole lab …

So I have been told that there is no word limit for IAs...but I don't know why, one of my IAs is 5,000 words (the other ones are around 4,000). It is probably not recommendable because it is really time-consuming, but can you actually get penalized? I mean, should I go back and summarize it or get rid of sections?\ Thanks a lot

Help, because I'm a full IB student, I can max take 2 sciences in IB. I really do want my options open considering I'm fairly good at science and have no idea what I want to do in the future.Basically I'll be taking one with Chem HL and probably Math HL and other courses in IB,( don't know if this info helps) and another one either in grade 10 or grade 11 summer school for the 20s. And by grade 12, I have a free block open up for the 30 level course. Hey guys, I'm starting my IB next year (!!) and our school's subject selections are due in really soon. I was just wondering whether any of you could give me any pointers or advice on whether I should do Chemistry or Biology (both will be at SL)... I don't actually want to study Science in my career, so it's really down to what's easiest. I'm quite good at Maths, which apparently Chemistry has quite a lot of, but I've also heard that Biology's easier in general. Any ideas? THANKS SO MUCH!

Hi! I was just wondering whether the 12 page limit included the bibliography? My chemistry teacher said it didn't but then my biology teacher said it did. Also, are there restrictions on the spacing? Can it be 1.0 spacing? Because I heard from a friend that it should be 1.5-2.0 spacing. Also, any other restrictions such as font size and margin spacing? Thank you!

So in a couple of weeks i'll be going back to school and i'm going into the 11th grade. This goes out to anybody who can't decide whether they wanna take Chemistry or Physics for their Group 4 subject. And in my case, HL. For those who have already gone through IB or are half way through it, or have decided their subjects already, i just want to know a couple of things that might help me in choosing: 1. What made you pick Physics/Chemistry? 2. If you've already gone through at least a year of Chemistry/Physics HL.... would you say it's really hard? I'm not really sure what I need to do in a sports, exercise and heath science IA. The topic I choose is does the heart rate of a person increase as the intensity of the activity increases? What do you guys think about it? is it a good topic for my IA?

Hey. I want to study Computer Science in university, as a result, I chose Computer Science and Maths HL (also Physics HL as my third HL). Many people say that CS HL has some very tough concepts and is harder than Maths HL? Is this true, in your opinion? Also, is does taking Maths HL really make your university application more competitive if you apply for CS courses? Thanks! I would really like some comments from people who are currently taking or took IB CS HL.

I'm asking this question purely because I want to know which one is easier, objectively. I know that in general, if you like a subject, you will be better in it, and you should always choose the one that you enjoy more. However, in my case, I am fairly neutral towards both. While chemistry seems a bit more interesting, that only because the BOOM! and flashy-flashiness of the experiments is fun. The rest of my courses are already pretty heavy (HL Math, HL History, HL English, HL French, and SL Economics) and I have no intention of going into medicine. So, IB Survivors! (or IB strugglers) SL Chem vs SL Bio Which one is easier, in your opinion? Feel free to share personal …

What kind of questions could be asked in the exams relating to nature of science? As we all know, there are 3 types of error in the sciences: 1. Systematic error 2. Random error 3. Human error Where the third one is not an appropriate type of error to be discussed in the Conclusion&Evaluation part in lab reports. My question is what are the examples of human errors? I only know a few but I am not sure on that anymore because I forget For example, last week I did a Chemistry experiment. I understood the procedure wrongly and I repeated the experiment after my teacher explained to me what I was actually asked to do. This wasted my time and I ended up not finishing the experiment. So we will continue the experiment tomorrow (4 out of the 5 of us made…

I'm currently writing my biology IA and I have no idea why but the thing that's worrying me the most is that my topic is too simple. It's on the activity of lactase on lactose affected by temperature, and I'm scared that enzymes are over done or it's too simple and the analysis is too obvious. It also doesn't help that all of the biology IAs IB provides on their website are all really complicated- like I don't understand how people came up with those ideas on their own! I'm taking both of them at HL, and I was wondering wether those who took them (or know people who did) - both - at HL could tell me the differences in amount of work, how easy/hard is to get a 7, or anyway a top grade. Oooh and if you did your extended essays on them, was it easy of harder compared to others' (in terms of work and effort and grade attained)...?

So apparently this is a new subject, I think? salivattack just sent me a syllabus for this subject - Sports, Exercise and Health Science - and it's apparently for first exams in May 09. That means I guess the first batch that will study it will be the ones just starting IB this year. I had a quick look at the syllabus...it looks pretty interesting. It's like a mixture of anatomy physiology with a bit of psychology thrown in. It's good for someone who wants to go into professional sports I guess. I know a friend of mine who's a professional squash player would love the chance to take this subject.

Could you maybe just give me your opinion (stating if, and how you stand in relation with these subjects) on the amount of work, the "easiness" of getting a 7. Hi, I know that the page limit for Physics and Chemistry IA is about 12 pages but what if your page limit exceeds, how many marks penalty do you get? For chem, I only have the most important data tables and the evaluation is kinda long...Total actual IA leaving Bibliography and Appendix is about 18 pages. How much penalty do I get? Plus I also heard that the Appendix and Bibliography is included within the page count. Is that true? Actually I have lots of data tables and calculations in my appendix, so it went to a total IA + Appendix = 26 pages. Thanks.
