OK, so I've chosen 3 HL sciences (Bio, Physic, Chem) along with English SL, Math SL, History SL, and Spanish SL. Now, you may have noticed I would need another higher in order to obtain my diploma. Hence why I'm here. For starters, Spanish and History cannot coexist in the timetable in my school, meaning I would need to change Spanish to French. Here I could kill two birds with one stone by taking French B HL. I could also take take French AB Initio and take English HL, however I like my English teacher so I'd rather not. My final option is taking one of the sciences SL and rearranging myself from that point. What do you guys recommend?

Just a random question, has anyone gotten 18/18 for an internal lab report marked by the IB? Apparently to my teachers knowledge no one from my school has, so just wondering if anyone else has?

ESS or Chem?

Hi, I recently started the DP. As I aspire to be an environmental scientist, I chose to take biology as my group 4 and ESS as my group 6. I'm having second thoughts, for I want to take the classes that will look best to colleges. Should I switch from ESS to chemistry? Thank you.

Hello, I am taking my IB this Nov 2014. I take Chemistry and Biology HLs. And my school is submitting the IAs this week. BUT the IA scores are not very good. I have a few 5s and most are 4s and some 3s. There was a rumour that if you don't do well in the IA section, you will lose your 7. Is it true?

Hi everyone, im starting the dp next year and ive received some summer work from my school. Some of the stuff seems a bit confusing and stuff ive never really covered in last years science class like drawing the strucutres of different molecules like glucose, glycerin, etc and describing how monosaccharide (glucose) is converted to a disaccharide (maltose). (Honestly, I dont even know what that means lol). Ive received my Bio and Chem textbooks early and I have been reviewing some content before school starts in September. What are some useful stuff that should be mastered and learned before someone starts in DP? Thank you.

As I was roaming through the internet one day, I came across a news article saying that there will be a syllabi change for IB group 4 in 2014, that is, the coming students next year (also the ones taking their exams in 2016). Since I fall under this list, I would really like to know whether that this information is true or not. However, another day I came across the Wikipedia page (I know I know, Wikipedia is not always reliable, but it's there, there's a possibility, even if it is really small, that the information might be true) saying that the syllabi don't change until the start of the school year 2016. I am really confused now. Please enlighten me whether if the s…

I have recently completed a chemistry mock test at school and I was quite surprised at how I would get 2/3 or 1/2 for short answers, despite knowing the content that the questions were asking. I lost marks for things such as using the term outer shell instead of valence shell or having too vague answers despite addressing the points. Are there ways in which I could improve the quality of my answers? How do I be more concise in my answers?

Hello everyone. Next year I will start my IB programs, however, I am still unsure which subject I should take for group 4. The 3 choices my school offers are: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Since we have to choose our subjects prior to the start of the next school year, I had settled with Chemistry but am not 100% sure yet. I heard we can make some small changes to the subject at the start of the next year. Please help me decide based on the information below: Biology: I heard the Biology teacher is very capable of delivering the material to the student, however the teacher had been known to be hard on many students. I took general biology in grade 9 and find it okay,…

Hello guys, I'm going into IB1 in September and I'm not sure which science to take. I don't plan to go into Science at University, so I'll just study one as an SL course. Should I take Bio or Chem? I'm pretty good at memorising, but my other IB courses will be hard so I'd rather have the easier Science course that's less work. This year I took a grade 10 course that had a section for bio, chem and physics and I did really well in all of them (97%), so I'm thinking about chosing Chem because it's more logical than Bio. Is chem harder than bio from your experience? Thanks!! Luisa

Syllabi Changes 2016 - New Textbooks

Hey guys, just a random question. As most (or some) of you may know, the Chemistry and Physics Syllabi are going to be changed for first examinations in 2016. Do you know if new textbooks for the new syllabi are going to be released right now (or before September 2014)? If not, do we just continue with the "old textbooks" and our teachers just leave out/add the stuff we do (not) need? Thanks for any replies

1) What subjects should I choose for the IBDP if I am interested in pursuing engineering/industrial engineering/product design? For higher levels, I am not especially keen on Chemistry as it's never been my strongest subject. Here was what I had in mind, but please recommend any subjects you would substitute or change the levels of: HL Maths HL Physics HL Visual Arts SL English Lang and Lit SL Economics SL French Will these subjects meet the requirements of top universities in the UK for the aforementioned courses? 2) As certain universities don't offer industrial engineering courses, is it possible for me to study another course (engineering, architecture, some sort of …

I don't know about other science subjects but I know that Chemistry and Biology Paper 2's consist of a section A and a section B. You are expected to answer two questions from section B. I have been told differently by my Chemistry and Biology teacher about answering more than 2 questions on section B. My chemistry teachers said that the examiners are obliged to mark all questions answered and will take the two highest while my Biology teacher said only the first two will be marked. I was wondering if section B is marked differently for different subjects or if one of my teachers has been misinformed. So what happens when you answer more than the required two questions …

Hi - this is regarding our Computer Science Paper 3 - the case study. I'm giving in May 2014. I've asked many teachers this but have got different answers. Are we allowed to carry the research that we have done for the case study, into the examination hall? As in, do we get to actively refer to printouts of our research during the examination? (What I am referring to is taking the resources in the way we were allowed to take our resources into the exam for our second language Written Assignments.) It would be great if any of you CS guys out there could answer this, or even better if an experienced teacher could. My teacher sucks and I really don't trust what he says…

I know that if I am multiplying/dividing my answer is the least number of significant figure in the data and if I am adding/subtracting my answer is the least number of decimal places i the data but what if I have a constant for example: If I want to find the average of the data so I'm going to add them then divide by the number of data: 3.05*2.05*1.05/3= 2 or 2.19 will the answer be one significant figure because of the three even if the three is not part of the data or will the answer be 3 significant figures as this is the least number if significant figures in the data being calculated.

I need to choose between SL chemistry and biology for my science course, i'm taking both of them now (IGCSE) and am getting A/A*'s in both, However, my current biology teacher is very harsh and give us notoriously hard tests, which puts me off from the subject - but i do enjoy the course nevertheless. Plus, since i've had a great biology teacher for the past 3 years, my base is strong as she has even taught us some a level biology throughout the IGCSE course. On the other hand, i've had a bad chemistry teacher for the past year and half, but i still manage to do well in the class. Since, i don't prefer one over the other its really hard to choose which to take - i also wo…

So DP2 students your Major Project should be well underway? Or maybe you are still struggling through the initial stages? Well now is the time to ask questions - Whether you are still confused about the DT criteria and what is partial and what would be considered complete? If you are stuggling with managing your time, or the structure of your project? Or even still struggling for a focus and have not managed to find your "constructive discontent" as of yet? Or any other questions... then please post a question to this forum... Dr T

So, recently we've been introduced and given a summary of the DP program. We have been looking though the classes to take next year when we start DP, and I'm having a little trouble choosing which science I should go into for HL. The classes I can take are as follows (In order of preference). Biology: I like Bio, It can be really boring on occasion; I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. Chemistry: Chemistry is ok... The teacher I had for it (who most likely will be next years HL Chemistry teacher) made it very boring. I never really had much motivation for that class. I did well, but I didn't really grasp some of the important parts, like balancing equations. Phys…

At the start of IB, I was determined to study either physics/astrophysics or some other course relating to physics. However, right now, 5 months into my course, I have had a HUGE change of heart and I'm really leaning towards studying Political&International relations, Economics, Law, or something of that sort. My point is, I am taking two of the hardest IB subjects (HL maths&physics) and I have absolutely no use for them. My current subjects are English LangLit HL Maths HL Economics HL Physics HL AB Initio French Theatre SL. The subjects I want to continue with for sure are english, french and economics and the subjects I want to change are maths and physics (th…

I'm trying to decide what science to take in the IB diploma program. It'd probably make the most sense to take ESS (Environmental Systems and Studies) or Biology, since I'm not good at math, but I don't find those subjects very interesting and, from what I hear, they're very content-based (involve lots of memorization and such). I'm going to take HL English, Art and History, which are also heavy with content, so I don't want to be too overwhelmed with having to memorize stuff. I think Chemistry is really interesting but, like I said, I suck at math. It's not that I don't like math, I'm just not a mathematically-inclined person.. at all, unfortunately. So, how much math…

Also, I was wondering how difficult would you say it is in comparison to other classes you have/are taking? Hey there, I just have few questions about Paper 3 (esp. Chemistry and Physics). I understood that there are a bunch of options you can study (some SL only, some SL and HL, and some HL only of which you have to study two in total... correct?) and I also understood that Paper 3 is all about the options... "Several short-answer questions and one extended-response question in each of the two options studied" - Physics Syllabus Guide, First Examinations: 2009, about Paper 3 So there are (according to the PDF document I have: http://www.ncbis.net/Editor/EditorImages/Physics.pdf ) 7 options for SL students available and 6 options for HL students. Hi there, I am currently in grade 10 and also planning on doing Physics HL in the IB. I heard that this course is supposed to be very difficult/demanding. The videos that I watched are about the 'IB Physics HL Topic 13: Quantum and Nuclear'. Hence, I don't really understand why people are "complaining" about this course. So my question is: Is this 'Topic 13' just comparably easy t…

I am kind of noncommittal whether to take Physics or Chemistry HL. I actually dont know why I tend to Physics. Could you maybe just give me your opinion (stating if, and how you stand in relation with these subjects) on the amount of work, the "easiness" of getting a 7. Thanks P.S.: I know that Physics HL is supposed to be more difficult. I dont know what I want to study at University (but definitely something science-,math- or economics/business related)

I am not quite sure what I want to study after the IB, but I was thinking about something with pharmacy/medicine, business or law (And I do know that neither the two last mentioned require Chemistry or Biology.. So the big question: Which is more beneficial for applying for universities?
