Here is some advice that you might want to follow right before and during the Math examination. Although most of these things are common sense, I think that putting it all down in words helps. So, 1) Ensure that you have atleast 2 working pens, a ruler, an eraser, two working pencils and your GDC put into your bag the night before the exam. - The last thing you want to do is forget something small and go around begging people for it/ going home to get it right before the exam. 2) Change the batteries of your GDC the night before the Paper 2 exam. - I know this is kind of extreme but after having used the GDC for so much exam practice [hopefully], the batteries might be ru…

In general, Applications and Interpretation covers a broad range of materials, but Analysis and Approaches covers a narrower range in greater depth. Below lists the main topics in each course, by color code from 2014-2020 syllabus Studies, SL and HL (including Further HL). New topics are italicized. HL includes all SL topics of the same course. Common topics in all new Math courses: Algebra: scientific notation, arithmetic/geometric progression, compound interest, annual depreciation, exponents/logarithms Functions: lines, graph of a function, domain/range, definition of inverse, identifying extremas, intercepts, symmetry, zeros, asymptotes Geometry/Tr…

The growing number of posts, where solutions to internal assessment tasks are given, has unfortunately led me to create a specific rule for this forum. Do not post mathematical solutions to questions about Internal Assessment tasks. IB rules clearly state that students are not allowed to gain direct help, whether oral or written, in writing their mathematics IA tasks. Thus, even if a student is desperate in proving a statement or finding the correct method to problems, you may not give the answer to him. You may, however, give an answer of general nature (without actual calculation) that will direct a student to the methods required to find a solution. For examp…

Hello people! I have seen Biology, Chemistry and Physics help threads; I figured I would create one for Mathematics too. I'm willing to help any Mathematics student with their problems or doubts. I am sure there would also be some other helpers, so if you have any Math question just post here unless they are questions regarding IA tasks. Questions regarding IA tasks must be posted in the correct IA threads and not here. Questions from textbooks, worksheets or even past year papers may be asked here no matter whether they are for Math HL, SL or even Studies. Please also include which Math level you are taking so the solution and explanation would be suitable with the exten…

I haven't seen any IA tips around so I guess I would share some tips gathered from my Mathematics HL teacher's suggestions, some IBSurvival members' suggestions, my own knowledge and my own experiences. Cover Page Unless this is set by your school, I recommend that your cover page includes: • School Name (e.g. Sekolah Tiara Bangsa – ACS) • School Crest, if available • Subject & Level (e.g. Mathematics HL) • Portfolio Type (e.g. Portfolio Type I) • Portfolio Title (e.g. Patterns Within Systems of Linear Equations) • Candidate Name (e.g. Desy Kristianti) • Candidate Number (e.g. 001863-002) • Examination Session (e.g. May 2012) Header and Footer I recommend that your H…

IBS has a system set up which allows you to enter in various bits of code and have them appear as mathematical symbols called Tex tags. For instance, rather than writing x^3, you can write . This is a quick guide explaining how to make this work for some of the more common Maths symbols you need for the IB. It may also come in handy as a way to copy/paste in as graphics for IAs, where relevant. For a more comprehensive overview, please take a look at this site: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX/Mathematics Additional Links (kindly suggested by Chrypton) Detexify - This site contains a white drawing area where you can draw a math symbol that you don't know the LaTeX c…

Why not only rely on past papers? In my opinion, the best preparation with past papers is not to look over mark scheme. Essentially, as the name suggests, mark schemes only aim to aid teachers to mark student’s work on his paper. Not only does it lack with the detailed explanation, but also students lose their opportunity to encounter real IB style questions if they rely too much on mark scheme. For section A questions it relatively gives a good explanation; for Section B questions, however, when things get lengthy, explanations tend to be very concise and often do not make sense for students. It solely aims to guide teachers to base their grading criteria; it …

Okay so I'll be switching schools 1 year into IB, and the 2nd school requires that I complete the 2-year IB course over again - but I'll have to do 4 HLs. I've thought about it, and I think thats pretty good, as it'll let me get higher grades in the end by having 1 extra year of IB. So my question is: If a student completes the first year of Math SL, how much of an advantage would that student have if they joined the 2-year HL course? Would it mean HL would be easier? Or would it mean I'd do less work because of the course overlap? Thanks!

Hi Guys, Now that Year 1 has ended, its almost time for me to get serious about colleges and that stuff. This year, I maintained a steady 5 in HL Math throughout the year, but I was thinking about dropping to SL, where it is more likely that I will get a 7 or at least a 6. I want to do Computer Sciences and Engineering in college, preferably in the U.S. Would it be better for me to switch to SL since that might bump me up to a total of 35 points (without EE and ToK), or should I stay in HL since that might look better on my transcript and my predicted grades? Thanks, Maharaja Stylo

During the 5 minutes when you read over the entire paper, what would be the best method to use my time? I was not aware of this until i took the exam, so I just read through each question and went over in my brain quickly how i would do them. Would it be best during this time to make notes on the questions or something?

I have this idea that is very interesting, but I don't have any time to pursue it at the moment. Enjoy racking your brain! Say I have a vector in 3-D space defined as r1 = a1i + b1j + c1k, where i,j and k are the standard basis in 3D vector space and a,b,c are continuous, differentiable functions with respect to some parameter t. (I'm trying to write R sub 1, a sub 1 etc...) So now let pr be the vector pr1 = pa1i + pb1j + pc1k such that each component of the vector has a probability p of appearing and a probability 1-p of having a value of 0. Now, imagine a set of vectors r1, r2 ...rn such that r1 + r2 + r3 + ... rn = 0 and no vector intersects any other - they form a di…

Severely anxious atm. I've always had a lesser strong suit in math, since about 9th grade, or middle school pretty much. I'm not sure it's due to the fact i never did math as a kid as im pretty sure i did just the same as everyone else. Ive had tutors all my life lol even since primary, and now being in IB Math SL is really taking a **** on me. For lack of a proper analogy. Excuse the profanity. Only last year, in 10th grade did i ever severely kind of 'fail' and that was close to passing, so I wouldnt say 'I can't do maths' rather, i have a weaker foundation. I've always tried to brush the situation off, with the plause 'I can just do studies next year'. Now im worri…

Hello Guys, Could you please fill out this form and survey, for my math IA. It is due in 1 week and I really need as many results as possible. Its a very interesting survey. I'm doing a statistical analysis on the effect of vegetarianism and emotions. Investigation question: What correlation exists between a person’s diet (Vegetarian/Non Vegetarian) and his intelligence and emotions? Here is the link to the survey. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Jtou5F1EACXrwvbKtwNKC2Q-OCN3darAgkkzI9z5DUA/viewform Thanks. Sanna.

It's summer / winter holiday for most of us and I thought I'd share a website on which you can practice your math. The website is brilliant.org and it doesn't really have IB style questions, but it's good practice anyway (and can be fun). After solving a question you recieve a certain number of points depending on the difficulty of the question. Using the points you collect you can 'buy' stuff with them (books for example, like flatland or Einstein's book about special relativity). Enjoy! (And if you already have an account, what levels are you in? I'm at level 3 for both.)

So, this past May, I took my Mathematics SL exam. The rest of my exams are in 2014. I am told that I will be taking AP Calculus BC all year next year, as an A/B day course. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me about this class? I am supposed to (last time I checked) be in the class with 11 other students, all of whom are in IB. Has anyone else been in my boat, could you somewhat describe what it will be like? At this point, the class itself is very mysterious. I'm beginning to think it will pretty much be an independent study course like the class would be for AP students, but I don't want to jump to conclusions.

This year will be my first year doing IB and I'm trying to choose my subjects. The university I want to get in requires Math HL and I want to study economics. (even if it wasn't required, it's still a good impression to take Math HL.) I have never been a math genius. With studying the night before my math exam, I'd get a score between 70-90 but I would ask A LOT of questions to my tutor... This year, I will study hard and regularly. But everyone on internet says that Math HL is like hell so I'm scared of ruining my life by choosing something I can't do... I like Math when I study, it's just that I don't understand as fast as a math genius... What should I do?

Hi, I have a question how to write a question number in the answer booklet in section B of mathematics appropriately. First of all, this is not a question about the questions itself in the exam, but a question about the tecnical part of writting question numbers of section B in the answer booklet. Today, we have written Paper 1. My question is what to do if we want to continue a question from first to second page. I know, that we need to write each question in a new page, but if we are continuing for example from page 1 to page 2, do we need to write the question number in both places. I know that in other subject there is no need to that, but i don't know if thats vaild …

I've noticed that around the forums all people are concentrated on are the specifics of the IA's and how to do them and what is expected off of them, but I can't help but wonder how come no one ever gets stuck on math problems. For example, I remember back in 9th grade when i was taking Pre-IB Pre-calculus that there were some things that were just really hard to understand. And since IB isn't the most open curriculum out there, I went on to take AP math classes (which are INRCREDIBLY better than any IB math class) Right now i'm in 11th and i'm taking Calculus IV (differential equations here in Florida), so if you guys have any questions about calculus that maybe you dont…

Hello everyone! I was just wondering if there are any people in this website that are going to take, are currently taking, or have finished the Math HL online course through Pamoja Education. If there are any of you that are currently taking it or have already taken it, please share your experience! Is the course harder than the usual classroom course? How do we get marked (Online tests?)? I just want to know the experience that anyone of you guys have concerning this online course! Thanks!!

I have heard from people that IB Math exams are getting easier and easier than before. The syllabus includes less things than before, exam questions are easier, etc. I have also noticed that more recent exam questions are easier. From textbooks, the questions from past papers of the early 1990s are so difficult! Is this true or is what I've heard a bunch of crap?

Hello everyone! As a part of my math ia, I am analysing the pharmacokinetic profile of a drug. A part of the pharmacokinetic profile involves finding the area under the curve of the medication's concentration - time graph. I think this area is meant to represent the total exposure of the drug to the paitent's body. This is what it says online as well. In other words, it would be the total amount of drug absorbed by the body. However, I'm not quite sure how this works, as the units used for the y axis (miligrams of the drug in each litre of drug - mg/L) are completely different from the x axis (time in hours or minutes). Multiplying these units would give you (mg*hr)/…

Hi there, I was wondering if we could all make a post about the commands for calculators used for solving maths questions. Some of us might forget about them but I think making a generalized list for this would be great(?) The list I had in mind would be like: The calculator's model The math topic Commands to solve for the math equations related to the topic Ex: TI- nspire Basic commands 1. Menu>>> 2. Number >>> 1. Convert number to decimals Statistic and probability 1. Menu>>>>5. Probability >>>>1. Factorial (!) These are more straight forward but there may be different ones that do not directly show that it is re…

Has anyone tried the Cambridge and/or Pearson IB Math SL books? How are they? Do they give really good explanations? Math is probably my weakest subject, so I want to make sure I have a good textbook for next year. I know my school provides the Cambridge one, but since I'm pretty clueless at math should I buy the Pearson one too, just in case? I liked the Pearson chem HL book, and even though the Pearson bio HL has a lot of stuff you don't need to know, I find the explanations in those good too.

Can my maths EE and IA be related ?
by Guest- 1 reply

So my maths EE is on different ways of solving cubic equations ( only about cardano's method and trigonometric method). but for my IA, I might want to do something about newton's method, which is a numerical analysis that can also be used to approximate cubic polynomial. In my EE, I just briefly mentioned the newton's method, did not demonstrate anything, just introduced it in a few sentences. That is it. In that case, do you think I can do my IA on Newton's method? They are kinda related.......

Hello everyone hope everyone are enjoying the new year. Does anyone have a PDF copy of the IBID HL math book Analysis and application book. I downloaded this book from Z Library and Ib resources/Ib Repository but the file I downloaded was only about 274 pages. That seems suspicious as the other books like the Cambridge, Haese mathematics and Pearson are about a thousand pages. Is this the real size of the IBID book? If yes then great but if not, can anyone kindly share the file with me? Thanks and hope you have a great day.
