Hello! Does anyone know what software was used to do this? http://xmltwo.ibo.org/publications/DP/Group5/d_5_matsl_tsm_1205_1/html/xmltwo.ibo.org/publications/DP/Group5/d_5_matsl_tsm_1205_1/pdf/example08_e.pdf What I meant was putting graph and co ordinates on a picture. I tried to use Logger Pro but I have no idea how to use it and all I could do was put points on the picture. Can anyone please help?

So, our teacher has finally given us the long dreaded math portfolio(for me at least). She has also given us two examples of the previous math portfolios (one good, one bad), BUT they are both statistics. Also I've been looking around for a while and no where does it state how to formulate a topic! Except for creating a topic in something I like. Could anyone provide me with tips or examples of how to create a topic? I've been stuck on it for a while...

I recently moved down to math studies from math SL. lots of my teacher said i wont be getting into even a decent university, unless Im looking at music, fashion or arts etc.. Im thinking mostly i want to go into business, economics or a combination of business and law. I already tried my best with math SL, I was able to solve all teh questions but when it comes to the examination,i never did good! please do tell me if its possible to get into pretty good uni's with math studies for the above UG programmes. If, yes please do name a few of them. and also, what are all the possible careers you can look into, if we do math studies? this would be of great help.thankyou

Hey I'm in 10th grade now, and I will have to choose my IB subjects very soon. I'm aiming to major in computer science, and I'm curious if I should to choose Maths HL or not. I'm not so sure if I will be able to score 5 or higher in Maths HL (In my SL/HL class I usually get 6 but I also got some 4s and 5s) and I'm thinking of choosing Maths SL, but I'm really worried that it might stop me from majoring in computer science for some universities. Should I take Maths HL or not? Btw, I still didn't choose where to for further education, maybe US or Canada.

Hello everyone, So I got this question in my Math HL class and I really cannot do it! Can anyone help me please .. John's sock drawer had 17 blue socks, 11 yellow, 9 orange, 34 green, and 2 brown, not sorted by color. The light bulb has been burned out. John cannot see what color the socks are. How many socks does John have to take to be sure he has at least two socks of the same color? Explain your answer Thanks

Hey, guys. I've had a lot of trouble trying to opt for either HL or SL. I desire to pursue something Biology/Chemistry related in university. so I've done some research, and what i found out is that Math HL is not required to apply for Biochemistry or something similar. Also, i thought that if i take Math HL, I will have less time to focus on my more important subjects like Chemistry and Biology. But, my brother who studies Math in The University of Cambridge, along with my parents and my school coordinator, say that regardless of my university course, I can't get into a good college with SL math. I aim to get into a top 50 college, and they're saying that with Math SL, …

Hello everyone! I am currently doing my IA and the topic that I've chosen is rather unusual, abstract and interesting. It is "Non-Euclidean geometries" and what I've done so far is showing how it differs from the traditional geometry by examining the Fifth postulate. Next, I'm thinking of discussing the two main types of non-Euclidean geometry: Hyperbolic and Elliptic. Now, there are some useful tools that convert the 3-D objects from the non-Euclidean geometry into a 2-D models, so I can easily create shapes, which to explore. But the problem is that I can't figure out how to include the "personal engagement" (which is one of the assessment criteria). Pretty much all of …

Hey, I had taken math HL in my first term and did pathetically. After a while i thought that whether it was really necessary to slog so much. I could take SL and ensure a better score there. But then my parents and my counselor are saying that if you drop HL, immediately the best universities are out of the options, because they all respect Hl a million times more than SL. They also said that obtaining a 5 in HL is a lot better than a 7 in SL. I am sure I don't want to do anything related to math in the future. (Biochemistry perhaps) What are your thoughts on this and what do you suggest i do? Cheers!

I am comparing swimming scores versus province in Canada. How many provinces should I do? Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and Alberta have the most data points. Although, I could do newfoundland and labrador, nova scotia, new brunswick, and prince edward Island. Only those 4 provinces have about 1/3rd of the data that the other 5 provinces have. So should I do those provinces or scratch them, and just stick to the main 5? Also another question, should all provinces have an equal number of scores? (because some provinces have less swimmers than others, so then what do I do, what scores do I cut out?) Help, please and thank you.

Hey guys! So I'm a having a little confusion about a decision I have to make, and I'd like your inputs on it. This is going to be a long post because I like to explain everything in detail. Here we go. A few months ago I decided that in college, I wanted to do my undergrad in animal science and then postgrad in vet science. Because of this, I had no choice but to take math SL- studies wouldn't be accepted and HL's way too hard for me. Math is my worst subject- I haven't passed it since the 6th grade. I managed to work really hard and get an A in my IGCSE boards, but we all know that practicing a bunch of past papers will get you through. Unfortunately it isn't like tha…

I'm really on the fence about what math class I should take next year. I'm in grade 11 this year, and my school only offers Math Studies SL or Math HL, so I decided to take Math Studies so I wouldn't overwhelm myself. I'm finding that it's ridiculously easy and I wish my school offered Math SL. Anyway, next year, even though I technically could be done with math, I intend to take another math class. However, I don't know if I should take College Calculus or AP Statistics. I don't want to have too much on my plate for senior year, but I want to challenge myself. What do you guys think?

Main topic : Geometry's relation with pool/pocket billiards Two different research questions of the same topic The efficiency of geometry to model a perfect game in pool/pocket billiards. The efficiency of geometry to model the key strategies and techniques of pool/pocket billiards. If you are going to suggest to me to read the EE of Alhazen's Billiard Problem, I have already read it Anyways, please tell me what you guys think and give me some feedback in modifying or improving my ideas. Hi fellow IB students So I have started the first year of IB two months ago and I've been taking Mathematical Studies. However, I like maths and I've started wondering recently whether I couldn't switch to SL (although I don't need for the university courses I have chosen). I would like to know which grades I could possibly get at Math SL (with some effort but without spending much more time on Math than on other subjects), considering that right now I get about 75 to 80% on Math Studies without studying at all and 90% to 100% with some effort (about one or two hours of preparations before a test) and quite bad teacher. Is there anybody who have moved from SL to Studies …

Hi, I'm a student in year two of the program. We got back our math results over the summer, (so it's been a while since then), but I am still having trouble getting over my results. You see, I was predicted a level seven in math last year. I always maintained a mid-low 90 and I got 17/20 on both my portfolios. I felt pretty set, and confident about getting that final seven in math. However, I failed. I ended up with a six. Worst of all, most of the people around me, who were -not to seem condescending in anyway- much worse at math than I was (I was always the guy they came to for help) ended up with sevens. That's two 98s on their belts, to bring to university. I rece…

I have this idea that is very interesting, but I don't have any time to pursue it at the moment. Enjoy racking your brain! Say I have a vector in 3-D space defined as r1 = a1i + b1j + c1k, where i,j and k are the standard basis in 3D vector space and a,b,c are continuous, differentiable functions with respect to some parameter t. (I'm trying to write R sub 1, a sub 1 etc...) So now let pr be the vector pr1 = pa1i + pb1j + pc1k such that each component of the vector has a probability p of appearing and a probability 1-p of having a value of 0. Now, imagine a set of vectors r1, r2 ...rn such that r1 + r2 + r3 + ... rn = 0 and no vector intersects any other - they form a di…

I started the IB at the beginning of September with these subjects: English A lit HL Biology HL Economics HL Geography SL French A lang&lit SL Math SL I have been scoring well (at least a 6) in all of my subjects except for maths. I knew this would be the case because Math has always been my weakness, but I really don't want it to penalize me in my future studies. I definitely don't want to go into anything Science-related, more like something to do with journalism, media, or international relations. Hey IBers, I just thought of some potential topics for my math EE. Please give me some feedback that will help me build on the following topics or even tell me if they are not appropriate for this assessment: Something that deals with pool. Such as the use of mathematics (geometry, and other branches of math) to perform an efficient game of pool? The use of geometry and other branches of mathematics to efficiently kick a soccer ball from different locations of a soccer field. These are some thoughts that came to mind. I just want to know if any of them are worth talking about for an EE. Thanks

I am currently taking Math HL but it is taking a lot of time for me to understand concepts and I don't do that great on tests. I am a decent maths student but I am considering dropping to Math SL because I don't think its worth it for me to take Math HL and to spend a lot of time on it and then possibly risking getting only a 4 on my final exam. I want to do something related to business and economics in university and I wanted to know if it is a big issue for universities in the UK and US if you take Math SL vs. Math HL. Any feedback would help a lot!

I just started my senior year in high school and I'm trying to decide if I should stick with SL or not. I took year 1 last year and did average the first 2 quarters and not as well the second two. I generally have taken all higher level classes through high school, and i don't know if dropping to lower level in my last year would make too much of a difference. I'm already taking IB English HL, IB Bio SL, IB Art HL, IB Spanish SL and Government and Economics but math has always been a really really tough topic for me. I know Math studies doesn't look as good but I don't want anything to potentially lower my gpa my senior year. Thoughts?

Hi there, while browsing through a lot of pointless webpages, desperately seeking for some IB-related information, I stumbled onto this pretty table listing maths topics you should have knowledge of before starting IB. >Here's the link to the whole .pdf doc< The bit I'm interested to is the very first, Prior Learning. Do you all agree with what is listed? Did you guys all know this stuff before entering the IB, and do you believe I will be tested on topics that differ from these in my entrance exam? p.s. yup, I'm new here.

I am currently nearing the end of my first year in IB (last term) and I am having difficulty with maths. For my first test I got a 28% which I was of course not happy about. I wanted to change to Maths Studies after that but decided to stay in SL. My grades did go up to 58% in the first semester exams (still not that great, I know). We recently got a new teacher and I just had another topic test, and my score dropped to 22%. Now I am deciding -again- whether or not it would be a better idea to drop to Maths Studies as I struggle with maths a great deal. So, this past May, I took my Mathematics SL exam. The rest of my exams are in 2014. I am told that I will be taking AP Calculus BC all year next year, as an A/B day course. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me about this class? I am supposed to (last time I checked) be in the class with 11 other students, all of whom are in IB. Has anyone else been in my boat, could you somewhat describe what it will be like? At this point, the class itself is very mysterious. I'm beginning to think it will pretty much be an independent study course like the class would be for AP students, but I don't want to jump to conclusions.

It's summer / winter holiday for most of us and I thought I'd share a website on which you can practice your math. The website is brilliant.org and it doesn't really have IB style questions, but it's good practice anyway (and can be fun). After solving a question you recieve a certain number of points depending on the difficulty of the question. Using the points you collect you can 'buy' stuff with them (books for example, like flatland or Einstein's book about special relativity). Enjoy! (And if you already have an account, what levels are you in? I'm at level 3 for both.)

So next year I am going to be starting the IB diploma program and as of now my schedule is: HL Literature HL History HL Biology SL Math 1, 2 SL Chemistry Spanish 3 (which is SL) This year I had HL math 1,2 and I struggled a bit but did really well. Hello. I need help in choosing a topic for a math hl internal assessment. If anyone has any ideas they did for their internal assessment whether it be hl or sl it would be greatly appreciated for inspiration. The final draft of my IA is due next year( senior. yr) but my teacher wants us to pick a topic and do a first draft by the end of this school yr. Since i'm still a junior and not yet familiar with some of the hl topic and since i did calculus this year i would like my ia to involve calculus. Im also comfortable with probability/permutation/combination which i know is a hl topic so my ia could involve that too. So if anyone has any ideas for me- thanks!
