Hello! This is my first post here. So I am planning on doing an extended essay in mathematics. I was originally planning on researching the Fibonacci sequence, but I've gotten a bit less interested in that and more interested in the golden ratio(phi) which can be derived from that sequence. I believe this would fit under the idea of "the beauty of mathematics" as written in the IB extended essay handbook for math. I'm just having a little bit of trouble deciding exactly what I should focus on in my extended essay (and what would be to broad or too narrow). Right now my idea is to write it on how the golden ratio appears in geometry. The smaller points I have under this …

Hey, I just wrote my mock exams and I realized that I do not know all the commands for my calculator. I have a TI-84 Plus. Does anyone have a "cheat sheet" with all the possible commands that I need for my HL Math paper 2 exam? Thanks in advance.

Hi! I'm in my 2nd year of IB and I'm thinking about the possibility of dropping from Maths SL to Studies. I feel that I'm struggling with SL especially with calculus and circular trig but I kinda don't want to drop to Studies as I don't really know what I want to do in Uni and not limit myself. So I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on this and could help me out? Thanks.

I am looking to buy a TI-Nspire CX version that is approved by the IBO. My question to everyone is: how useful is this tool? Would you recommend it to other students (I am going into SL Math)? Is it suitable for the IB Curriculum? Do you find it better than other GDCs (TI-84, 83 etc.)? Cheers!

My IA question is this: Does state gun control law affect violent crime? I will be using this data http://www.census.go...les/12s0308.pdf to help me Honestly I am completely lost, my teacher probably did explain this to me but I've missed a week of school since I was pretty sick a few weeks back. All I know is that there should be simple and complicated calculations, what type of calculations is needed for each? I think it is mean, average, and mode for simple calculations? Correct me if I am wrong, but, if someone could guide me in the right direction it would be great. P.S. This is for math studies.

For a n-shaped parabola, what do I call the second half of the parabola? From the peak to the 'base'. Is there a name for it? It's like a half-life graph with a reflection in the x-axis. What do I call it? Downward sloping?

So I have a practice MATH IA on Pricing... I haven't been given any guidelines, so I thought I might take up the pricing of shares of a certain company (Tata Steel Ltd.) but I can't figure out how math relates to this... any pointers? PLEASE help? what could I talk about... so far I have included how average of the varying stock prices can be used to determine the price of the share in the near future.... Is that all there is in this topic?

Okay, so my IA is due next week. Literally my teacher just left us by ourselves to do it. He took us to the computer lab for 2 days, but everytime I asked for help he kinda told me, but not well enough for me to understand it. So basically I'm doing "Does the day it was released have an effect on the number it reached on the Billboard chart?" meaning Taylor Swift songs. I already have the data and everything. My only problem is I don't know what tests to use to test it. He told me it was a hard topic, but he wouldn't let me change it to a survey either.. So I'm stuck trying to decide what math to do.

Course recommendation forms came around and just as I had suspected...I was not recommended for IB Math Studies. WHAT?! He put me in prob/stats! The easiest course in the entire school...he wont let me into studies, unless I get an A this quarter. Impossible. It just is. I know some might think, "Pre-calculus? How the hell are you failing?!" But I just don't get it, I don't understand what I am doing wrong. It's all floating numbers mocking me every time I try to sleep at night. Should this be a sign? Should I drop to certificate? And what are the requirements for certificate?

Say you have Sin X and Sin Y, where X and Y are plane angles in degrees. Is there a way to simplify (Sin X)/(Sin Y)? I know this works: cis(x)/cis(y) but I'm hoping to find an analog in the conventional trig functions.

I just found an amazing graphing program that takes a bit to get used to, but is really handy. The program itself is called Advanced Grapher or Agrapher for short. It can be found at http://www.alentum.com/agrapher/. It comes with a 30day free trial, but costs money after that. I know some people who utilized their computer knowledge to ascertain a full version of this program by questionable means, but I do not personally endorse hacking. So what useful graphing programs have you found?

Hey everyone, I've got a pretty big decision to make within the next few weeks regarding which level of IB Mathematics to take. I only have the options of SL or HL - no further maths or studies is offered at my school - and the decision I make is final; If I go into HL and find it too difficult or take SL and find it too easy I cannot switch to the other. If I were to take SL, I would have 3 more semesters of math in high school and end math at the end of 11th grade; taking HL, I would have 4 more semesters and end at November 2012. Grades aren't that major of a concern for me - on our transcripts for universities, our marks are standardized (for HL , they are routinely s…

I have this SL math stats test tomorrow, and I'm freaking out. My teachers says it's the most heavily weighted test. I currently have around a 98 converted in SL math, but I'm worried that it will drop to like an 89 because of how badly I'll do tomorrow. Like, I try studying, but everytime I attempt a question, I get really stressed. (Even my anxiety meds don't help.) I THINK I understand the material, but I can actually get only like 60 percent of the practice questions correct. (However, I do a lot of practice, so yeah..) I'm comfortable with the statistical distributions found at the very end of the textbook, as well as the mean, median, and mode stuff midway through it…

I have a practice IA due within a few days and I had a question reguarding how to approach the graph i need using the sinusoidal function. These are not my points, but merely an example to get an idea on how this works. The graph needs to be based on a technilogical graph I created using points below: time = x coordinate height = y coordinate (0, 7), (1, 9.7), (2, 11.3), (3, 11.5), (4,10.4), (5, 8.6) I am comparing the function i create by hand's graph to the computer generate graph I've made in excel. Thanks. And If I'm asking for too much, just message me and I'll delete the forum.

Hey guys So I've recently got a new maths teacher, and she cannot teach to save her life. I've spoken to the school and they have pretty much told me on just get on with it. I was wondering if anybody had an advice on learning the course without the teacher as no other teacher will help me. I don't want to fail as I want to do a natural science degree so a 6 is a must have. Thanks!

So, I had no way around the horrible horrible scheduling at my school and had to take math HL in my second year even though I wanted to drop down to SL. Kind of a big deal since I couldn't seem to learn anything from the teacher last year. My question is, should I still take the SL test? Or the HL? I am still really good at math, but I just find it so hard to keep a steady focus in this class that I feel like I would end up dooming myself in the end and was wondering what I should do . The IB coordinator says I'd be fine to take the SL test, but I've read other places that it's suicide to take HL class and the SL test. Help me please?

Hi guys, Due to various issues, my parents were ready to withdraw me from my current IB school and make me transfer to another school (A level or IB) around the time of the maths IA deadline. They were trying to avoid this but accepted this could be a possibility. I didn't hand in my IA on the deadline day but many people hadn't handed it on the deadline day so the maths dep had extended the deadline. My IA was complete but I didn't hand it in because I didn't want my maths teacher wasting his time marking it for no reason without the knowledge I might not be staying on. I approached my maths teacher and told him I might be transferring schools (because my new school need…

Can you form a statement that creates a link between the two specified irrationals? Can you form an iff statement and prove it? Conventional logic need not apply. For all I care, you could be stuck in Z/1 (Z mod 1).

Hi! I'm very new to this site, this is my first post. But I'm going into my last year of IB soon, and my extended essay choice is a challenging one. The topic is a part of the chaos theory, but more geometric and proven than chaos. So my overall question has yet to be formed, but is along the lines of fractal homeomorphism and about the specific relationship between say the area of a disk before and after it has been transformed and between it's perimeter before and after it has been transformed, using the same (elementary) transformation. *This original suggestion is not mine, but recieved from M. Barnsley* After looking into it, I do think its very interesting, and I w…

Severely anxious atm. I've always had a lesser strong suit in math, since about 9th grade, or middle school pretty much. I'm not sure it's due to the fact i never did math as a kid as im pretty sure i did just the same as everyone else. Ive had tutors all my life lol even since primary, and now being in IB Math SL is really taking a **** on me. For lack of a proper analogy. Excuse the profanity. Only last year, in 10th grade did i ever severely kind of 'fail' and that was close to passing, so I wouldnt say 'I can't do maths' rather, i have a weaker foundation. I've always tried to brush the situation off, with the plause 'I can just do studies next year'. Now im worri…

Hello everyone I just have a quick question about the IAs. I'm quite sure that the number of significant figures for all IB math exams/IAs/whatever is 3 right? Also, what are the rules about the use of scientific notation in IAs? For a number such as 0.00064, would I write it as 6.4E-4?

I just posted some new video tutorials on youtube. In this series of videos, I go over the basics of calculus (or as some call it, cal-clueless!). Hopefully after you go through the videos, you will be a calculus master. Here's a link to the playlist. There are 14 videos uploaded in all at the moment. In these calculus videos, I go through the formal definition of a derivative, as well as notation. Then, we go over some basic tricks for dealing with polynomials, negative and fractional exponents, as well as sin, cos, tan and natural logs. Then, we learn about the product rule, quotient rule and finally the chain rule. The series ends with showing you how to find the…

How do you guys study for a math exam? My math exam is in exactly one week and i have 7 units to review: Trigonometry, Transformations of Functions, Exponents (this was review), Radicals + Imaginary Numbers, Sequences + Series, Logarithms, Pre-Calculus. Our teacher told us how many questions there will be per unit and Trigonometry, Exponents, Sequences + Series, and Transformations of Functions have the most questions on the exam, which is why I'm focusing on them more. I know that math is basically doing all the questions but I feel that if I do every single question in the textbook again I will be spending more time on one thing then another. So, is it better to practic…

Hi everyone, it seems like the shadow functions post in the HL Maths section died pretty quickly :/...but I have a quick question about the general statement, and YES I have read all the other posts about IAs... Is there always only ONE general statement in a Type 1 Maths IA? As in even if you had general statements for 3 different functions, would you put them together into one equation as the general statement? Or would you show/test all three of them separately.

Does anyone know of the mark boundaries for IB Math SL from the years 2010 and 2011? A mark boundary which tells you what you multiply the score from paper 1 and what you multiple the score from paper 2 and what you multiply that score from your IA, and when added, it would give you a composite score out of a 100 which you match up on the final mark boundaries. I found one from 2008 and 2009 but was wondering if there are more recent ones. Thanks.

Hello guys. I'm taking Maths SL at the moment and my exams are in 2013. We've been given a syllabus that dates back to 2008, but I've heard that there's been updates for 2014 (Starting from 2012?). Are the people taking Maths exams in 2013 still using the 2008 one or has there been an update in between? (Starting 2009/2010/2011?)

It's maybe more interactive than simply watching the youtube videos though. Enjoy! I'm making TONS more videos, but obviously I can't do too many more before the May 2012 exams - time is of the essence. I'm going to spend next week working on Topic 7: Calculus. My school is very small, in my class we are 16 people, which is pretty decent, but the IB2 class has only 5 people, and preIB only 2!!! It's really sad, so that's maybe why there's only one Math course offered, and it's Math Studies. And even tough my teacher is incredibly good, she has to teach us Studies. I am really considering to study Maths in the University, or even nanotech. But with my poor formation in Maths I'm starting to reconsider that option. Luckily, I'm going to Finland as an exchange student for one gap year, and it's very likely that I will be placed in an IB school, but even if I weren't, Finnish education is recognised as the best in the world, so I gu…

Hey, I'm sorry if there's a sticky for this (which I wasn't able to find :/) but I was wondering what graphing calculators are recommended for both the HL math exam and the IA? I'm doing Type I this year and it's about complex numbers. If it would help, I'm in Canada and I'm looking for one around $100 (if that's possible). Or, just what brands of GC's are most reliable for students taking HL math? Thanks

I find Integration by substitution absolutely annoying and irritating. It's either that or my feeble attempt to jog my rusty brain in the middle of the holidays to practice some maths. That didn't go so well. How are you guys finding Maths? I found it great and easy in the first half of the first year, but towards the end of the first year, it's getting harder.

I'm studying from H&H Maths HL book and my teacher sends extra exercises, but I just feel it is not enough. I do all of my homework, but when I come to the test I just fail worse and worse every time - exercises in the test are much harder than in the textbook. Therefore, I decided that I need to learn extra on my own and I have read about this Pearson's HL textbook in IBS. I have read that exercises in it are more difficult so I want it Maybe anyone could tell me where I could get it from? P.S. If you have any other suggestions about extra learning, they would be very welcomed.

I'm doing my IA and I came check if there were any useful general tips. However, I found topics discussing particular IA of this year about circles. I had no idea what to do with it, so those tips really pointed me in a good direction. But those tips are really scattered and putting them all into one post would benefit some people. So, do you think I could post all of those tips to make people's life easier? There would be no specific calculations or anything like that, only general stuff(directions how to do it, best software, etc.). Do you think I could do it?

Hi there! I tried reading some posts about this IA but it was no help. I have a particular problem with this IA, because I'm given the years and the heights reached by the medallists, and I used the years as "X" and the heights as "Y" but I get a reaally weird graph. If anybody could help me with the following, I'd appreciate it: 1.- Is there something wrong with my graph? Because honestly, the "function" I got is kinda funny. 2.- What do they mean by "parameters"???? My teacher said she'd explain what "parameters" means but so far, she hasn't said anything at all. Thank you !
