Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

The word limit for the EE is 4000 words. If you go over this limit you lose marks. There is no minimum but for most subjects, you should expect to go above 3500 words. For experiment based subjects like sciences or math you can go as low as 2500 if there is sufficient formulae working (math) or data (sciences) or other things not included in the word count but suffices to show that you've done work on the essay. The word limit for the Abstract is separate and is 300 words. The following are not included in the word count: footnotes, appendices, abstract. Any direct quotations included in the body of the essay are included in the word count. If you don't want to include…

The title is pretty much self-explanatory (lol) but if not, this is a post about writing an a1 language ee, primarily focused on english obviously, and based largely on personal experience. If you have any questions about this post (turned out longer than I expected!) or the ee itself, send me a message. Also, if you have a draft and are looking for feedback, I might be able to help. Ground rules first - you need to have a good grasp of your the language you are writing your extended essay (latin and ancient greek possibly excepted) -- and this probably means a good grade in the relevant class. Choosing good supervisor, and one you are on good terms with, is also a good i…

Hi all, I just replied to a specific/topic-based EE question, and I'll repost my reply here as some of the hints/tips/advice/comments could be useful to others Ok, so it's been over a year since I did my EE, but I'll try my best to give you some help/tips. - Your topic is wayyyyyyyyyyy too broad for an EE. You should try and make it a local topic, even if it's from a broad origin. I did mine on the effect of falling economic growth (as measured by GDP) in Australia (very broad) on the residential property market of the Brisbane postal code of 4000 (extremely specific). Ultimately I didn't like my topic as there were too many variables, but I managed to still get an…

Its hilarious to think of a site that is considering helping future students when their time is so limited especially on an IB basis. How can new users "benefit from [the site]" when you are proposing them to post 100 comments/posts. I mean take my intention as an example. I want my second post to be an economic guide to "benefit [the site]" ,with my essay attached to it, but how would it be possible for me to open my own essay, or my other friends'. T_T [administrator] ; Dues, lc, and hms, please see to my request upon giving more acknowledgeable privileges to the new IB'ers. I understand by what you meant when you thought that people could "benefit themselves only". B…

Hey guys! so while i was going through the threads, i saw that none of them actually gave good pointers on how to write a very good abstract. So i've got a few notes which i'll share with everyone. They were handouts which my supervisor had given me, but i just condensed it into one. Good luck! HOW TO WRITE AN ABSTRACT An abstract is a concise, stand-alone statement that conveys the essential information contained in an article, book, research paper, or document. Written in a direct non-repetitive style, the abstract should: - Identify the problem (research question of thesis) investigated. - Describe the scope or method of investigation. - Summarize the results. - …

I need help if my topic and research question is appropriate enough for when I apply to a decent Uni. for medicine. I'm doing mine on Biology and it will be about Acupuncture, as of the moment, myself and the rest of my fellow IB colleagues have just begun on the EE. This is our first week in on doing it. And our first time as well. Anyway, knowing that I have asked my supervisor already on how should I look up on Acupuncture, and I've done some research already to see if there are enough reasonable references via internet - for the mean time - I was able to come up with a research question which in I would really love to get some feedbacks if it is a strong and appropria…

I'm curious enough to pose the question of 'how long did it take you'. Just wanted to see how many days it took to construct the essay and the research in between. You can also mention how long you spent researching. So far I have been on mine for 5 days. Complete apathy means that I take a long time to get into it.

It looks like most of the excellent 50 extended essays doesn't include Business and Management examples. Is it extremely hard to get an A for extended essay in Business and Management? Please comment on my research question: To what extent is the marketing strategy of Starbucks effective globally and how does it affect the newly built Starbucks branch outlet at Xiamen, China in 2010? Is this understandable, if not, are there any suggestions to improve it? I'm pretty sure key terms are missing from the research question but I don't have the list with me. I was reading the EE guidelines for a paper in psychology and it indicated that i should not do my essay under the psychology field if i did not take psychology as a part of the Diploma Programme. My school does not offer psychology as a part of the Diploma Programme; however, i took AP psychology last year and did exceptionally well both in the course and on the test, so i am very familiar with psychology. So my idea is to test how efficient cleaning products work (soapy water, hand sanitizer, baby wipes, rubbing alcohol, etc.) by basically growing a few petri dishes of bacteria and then putting each substance on the bacterial growth and analyzing results. OK...it's my third ever post on this site....so please be kind!! This is my idea for the extended essay (physics): I was thinking of reproducing some of the classic Doppler experiments using sound waves. This experiment that I have in mind, involves finding someone with a loud car stereo, having them play a sine wave of known frequency (the free sound editing utility Audacity can generate these in a format that can be saved as MP3's or .wav files to be burned to CD). I could stand on the side of the road recording the sine wave (Audacity, again) as the car is moving towards and away from the recorder at various speeds. Then I could analyze the recordings for frequency…

Good Evening from Massachusetts! Today, I just got started with my research for my Extended Essay, and mine is primarily about Toyotomi Hideyoshi: The Daimyo who unified Japan as one. As I started to read about Hideyoshi (Japanese history rather than U.S. and European history for once), I became excited and eager to read more and begin to type my EE. The research is a bit hard, since I can't find books on Hideyoshi, but whenever I do, it's always a joy to read. Do any of my fellow Ib-ers feel this way? What's your topic about? I'd love to hear that the EE isn't as bad as most people believe.

Hello all, New to the forum, but kind of need some help narrowing down the topic of Bitcoin as a research question! So here's what I have gathered/thought about so far: Bitcoin is an interesting virtual-currency that somehow stood out from all of the other virtual currencies such as in game coins in video games It's similar to a currency, but can not be considered one due to the lack of government support It's risks are high as cryptography may not be advanced enough to be hacker-proof It's emerging steadily as more investors look into this form of currency/commodity It's core is basically in place, now still needs more advancing Traditional economists dislike the idea of…

Hello EE writers or future writers (dont worry you still have a week, take your time), I figured that since I have a year left of I might start reading some of the things you guys have done or will do to write this...splendid piece of paper. First off: In our school we have this due date list, tell me if it happens in your schools too. As soon as you start your junior year, you get a list with blank spaces for signatures. Every week you're supposed to have your mentor sign your work. And you have to show real work too, not just say you're doing it. For example, the first month you're supposed to have the first page done with resources and a started bibliography. Does it …

I'm currently doing a biology EE with the research question: To what extent could stem cell therapy be used in repairing brain damage as a result of neurodegenerative components as seen in progressive diseases such as Alzheimer's? I don't really have any intentions of changing my topic or shifting to a primary research topic, but I was just wondering since I've heard around that secondary research EE's never do so well for science EE's. Honestly a little worried but I really do like my topic and it's something I'm genuinely interested in.

I am coming to the point when I need to choose a topic for my EE. I am torn between whether to do math or English. I thought about doing my EE in English on Harry Potter, but I am not sure how I would incorporate research into that. I am also thinking of doing an EE in math about something along the lines of the Golden Ratio or something about mathematics in music. Does anyone have any sample topics I may be able to use and where I could take those? I am open to doing either, though I think an EE on the Golden Ratio or Music and math sounds a bit more interesting to me right now.

Hey guys, I decided to do my extended essay in Spanish. I'm from Canada and Spanish is the fourth language I can speak fluently. Ok, so I need to decide between a few topics. My choices include analyzing two pieces of literature by Lorca, and historical events and their significance in Cuba, Spain, or any other "pais hispanohablante." For the part about events, my teacher says I should focus on HOW (i.e. "to what extent") an event impacted the culture or traditions. Does anyone have any ideas for events that did this on a grand scale in history? Also, what would be a better choice, the historical event side or analyzing literature side?
