Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

Hey guys! so while i was going through the threads, i saw that none of them actually gave good pointers on how to write a very good abstract. So i've got a few notes which i'll share with everyone. They were handouts which my supervisor had given me, but i just condensed it into one. Good luck! HOW TO WRITE AN ABSTRACT An abstract is a concise, stand-alone statement that conveys the essential information contained in an article, book, research paper, or document. Written in a direct non-repetitive style, the abstract should: - Identify the problem (research question of thesis) investigated. - Describe the scope or method of investigation. - Summarize the results. - …

The title is pretty much self-explanatory (lol) but if not, this is a post about writing an a1 language ee, primarily focused on english obviously, and based largely on personal experience. If you have any questions about this post (turned out longer than I expected!) or the ee itself, send me a message. Also, if you have a draft and are looking for feedback, I might be able to help. Ground rules first - you need to have a good grasp of your the language you are writing your extended essay (latin and ancient greek possibly excepted) -- and this probably means a good grade in the relevant class. Choosing good supervisor, and one you are on good terms with, is also a good i…

Hi all, I just replied to a specific/topic-based EE question, and I'll repost my reply here as some of the hints/tips/advice/comments could be useful to others Ok, so it's been over a year since I did my EE, but I'll try my best to give you some help/tips. - Your topic is wayyyyyyyyyyy too broad for an EE. You should try and make it a local topic, even if it's from a broad origin. I did mine on the effect of falling economic growth (as measured by GDP) in Australia (very broad) on the residential property market of the Brisbane postal code of 4000 (extremely specific). Ultimately I didn't like my topic as there were too many variables, but I managed to still get an…

The word limit for the EE is 4000 words. If you go over this limit you lose marks. There is no minimum but for most subjects, you should expect to go above 3500 words. For experiment based subjects like sciences or math you can go as low as 2500 if there is sufficient formulae working (math) or data (sciences) or other things not included in the word count but suffices to show that you've done work on the essay. The word limit for the Abstract is separate and is 300 words. The following are not included in the word count: footnotes, appendices, abstract. Any direct quotations included in the body of the essay are included in the word count. If you don't want to include…

Its hilarious to think of a site that is considering helping future students when their time is so limited especially on an IB basis. How can new users "benefit from [the site]" when you are proposing them to post 100 comments/posts. I mean take my intention as an example. I want my second post to be an economic guide to "benefit [the site]" ,with my essay attached to it, but how would it be possible for me to open my own essay, or my other friends'. T_T [administrator] ; Dues, lc, and hms, please see to my request upon giving more acknowledgeable privileges to the new IB'ers. I understand by what you meant when you thought that people could "benefit themselves only". B…

What does "to what extent" really mean? How exactly do you answer a to what extent question? My research question is : " to what extent do dreams and the conscious mind interact?" Do I answer in my thesis, as: Dreams and the conscious mind influence each other to a large extent? I'm confused. BTW. what exactly is the structure of EE? Is it like a typical 3 argument essay? How many arguments do I exactly need? Thanks!

I'm curious enough to pose the question of 'how long did it take you'. Just wanted to see how many days it took to construct the essay and the research in between. You can also mention how long you spent researching. So far I have been on mine for 5 days. Complete apathy means that I take a long time to get into it.

General Questions 1) Does the title page + table of contents count towards your total word count? 2) Do the heading titles count (aka Introduction, Aims, etc) Geo-specific 1) Do the explanations for the surveys count (justification for why I asked the things I did on my questionnaire etc) 2) Do data tables count (numerical values and words) 3) Do the data tables/maps/pictures titles count? 4) Are picture captions/annotations included And while I'm at it, I'll ask for another friend who is doing a Business EE 1…

Hi guys, My name is Filip and I'm from Poland but I live in Spain. I decided to do economics EE but now I need a topic, and as you guys know it's not as easy as it seems to be. The topic must be pretty narrow and here is the problem. I wanted to do something about currencies, price of oil, gold, etc. (in other words, about raw materials). It would be nice if the topic had to do with my regions, I mean Poland and Spain. Any good ideas? Thanks for your help guys! Best regards, Filip

My extended essay is due pretty pretty darn soon. I have been cutting out tonnnns and tonnnnns of words, but I have yet to cut out another 300 to reach the 4000-word word-limit. Seeing as I have already cut out almost half of my EE (yes, those smart people can do the math and deduce what I started with), I have tried to be rather sneaky. Below are the questions I have about my sneakyness, and some good answers would be much appreciated. 1) I have used many footnotes, which do not count for the word-limit. My supervisor says it's OK, but I am very worried that they are too crammed. Some of them are sentences explaining, for example, a particular word not fully explained i…

For my extended essay, I've decided to do English A1 for my subject, but I'm having a really hard time finding the perfect book to go along. I'll list some books I've thought of doing about, but feel free to suggest any other books. For the most part, I was thinking of doing a comparison between classic romance novels with modern romance novels. So, if you want to suggest a book, I'd prefer if it's romance. =) Emma by Jane Austen The Fault in Our Stars by John Green Just Listen by Sarah Dessen Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas If my romance idea doesn't fall through, I was also thinking of doing about the Outsiders by S.E. My school has strictly set up deadlines & requires us to write a 'detailed extended essay outline'. Ive viewed a couple of EE, read about what should be put into the introduction/main body etc. Im doing my EE in history. Im really bad at making plans or outlines. So I just put my EE through turnitin and it came back with 9% similar. Is the fact that this percentage is low compared to the 20% that we're allowed to reach something to take note of because my supervisor is constantly stressing the fact that this is in the end a research essay and the low percentage could mean a lack of evidence and quotations?

Hey guys, I decided to do my extended essay in Spanish. I'm from Canada and Spanish is the fourth language I can speak fluently. Ok, so I need to decide between a few topics. My choices include analyzing two pieces of literature by Lorca, and historical events and their significance in Cuba, Spain, or any other "pais hispanohablante." For the part about events, my teacher says I should focus on HOW (i.e. "to what extent") an event impacted the culture or traditions. Does anyone have any ideas for events that did this on a grand scale in history? Also, what would be a better choice, the historical event side or analyzing literature side?

Hi there! My EE is about Robin Hood ("To what extent was Robin Hood real?"), and while I didn't have trouble finding sources, they were all too expensive and I only bought 3. My library had NO books about him, so I had to order mine online. They're great, very detailed, with insight, facts, timelines and whatnot. One of them even has a poem from the 1400s, the first written account of Robin. Besides the 3 books, I have about 5 reliable websites I'm drawing information from. My question is, how many book sources and internet sources do we usually need? I emailed my supervisor, but he didn't answer my question, only said I was "on the right track". Thank you!

I'm doing an extended essay in ESS, but it seems no one here takes that subject or has/is doing and extended essay on it. If you're out there I'm curious to know your research question and so on. Also, I have asked my teacher and he said it could be a research paper, meaning there does not need to be a practical, or any sort of experiment, but he doesn't seem to well informed and I am nervous that I might have to. But there are not many resources for ESS extended essays.

Hi, all! I've just submitted my extended essay. Most of the formulas and concepts have references to the sources (footnotes). Unfortunately I just reread and found out that one or two things that should have been referenced haven't. What could happen? Dear all, I am pondering about my EE topic. At first I gravitated towards Physics (pun not intended!) as it is one of my favourite subjects and reflects my career goals, but then I found this website http://www.physics-i...ended-essay.htm which states that getting a high mark is quite difficult. So, my question is, out of the subjects listed in my signature: Which subject is the easiest to write an Extended Essay for? I would like my essay to involve as much personal research as possible, and avoid interaction with the public through surveys, event planning etc. as much…

I recently responded to a post which made me think about my EE. My EE is a very complicated topic that I find quite interesting. The experiment, on the other hand is quite simple. I will only be collecting one data which is Time. I will calculate other simple things like molar mass, moles, etc. But I don't really have any harcore chemistry in here. What should I do and will this negatively affect my mark?

Hey everyone, I am doing my EE in English, on Pride and Prejudice, and my research question is based on a quote (to be more specific, my essay questions a particular line spoken by the female protagonist in relation to the whole book). So I was reading up some sample EEs in English, and found them all to be of varied lenghts; 380, 320, 590 and 760 words. What is the ideal length (because this was not mentioned in any place I looked up, e.g. the EE guide). Also, it says in the assessment criteria for Criterion A: research question that the research question must be clearly stated in the introduction.
