IB Visual Arts Workbook Guidance One of the biggest problems I have seen students encounter in their IB1 and IB2 with IB Visual Arts is their workbooks. For my Visual Arts HL course I am taking option B, therefore I focus mainly on my workbook rather than studio work. Below I wish to give advice on how to complete amazing workbooks pages that relate to your studio works. All of the information below is from my personal experience and from watching other IB students in visual arts who have received 6s and 7s for their final IB grade. Besides giving simple advice, I have reviewed the syllabus, and I will try to demonstrate how the advice and tips given relate to what is sai…

Hey there I definitely noticed that there is quite a lack of Theatre Arts students, or at least ones experienced enough to hand out tips and experiences. My exams are May 2012 so can't say that I'm am an all-knowing guru of Theatre Arts wisdom but I do have a teacher who has been teaching IB Theatre for a couple years and he's produced good results. Plus I'm just really passionate about it so it helps. So anyways more specifically this post is about the Independent Project Portfolio because I just finished mine and man was it fun, but a lot more work than I had expected and I hoped that I could offer up a few words of advice for any first/second years who haven't yet s…

I was wondering, what's everyone's theme for visual arts? Mine: The Universe and men through time and feelings. sounds interesting, but it ended up sucking. Haha. So anyways, what's yours?

For the past year I've been completely into my visual art theme and I've always wanted to know what other people have picked. So this is a space for anyone to share what their theme is and how they decided upon their theme. Mine is focused upon Japanese art and western culture influencing on Japanese art. I arrived at this topic because of my love for Japanese culture and the language. I've explored a large array of different media with all kinds of topics.

Art is a very wishy-washy subject. For most subjects, it is pretty self-explanatory on how to get a perfect 7. But I always hear that people very rarely get a 7 in art. So share your tips and let's try our best to get through such a wearisome subject. Here are my tips: for the studio work: - make it as attractive as you can. you want the first impression to be a good one. - make use of a variety of materials- be open minded/inventive. who says you must stick to paper all the time? - the title really aids the viewer in figuring out the theme. having said that, don't make your theme so obvious that it just clicks when you look at the art. it should be thought provoking - it…

I need help understanding how to write the theatre research investigation (the one where you have to write about a specific aspect of a play). My old theatre teacher left in the middle of the year and my new one didn't explain it clearly, so I was wondering if anyone knows how I should procede in writing it.

Hi, I'm vola, and I'm an alcoholic new to IB Survival. I used to be on ibscrewed before spambots ate it. On a lark I decided to visit the site, see what's become of it, and it now links to here. Having just completed IB (with a respectable 33 points), I felt like I should join to see what advice and experience I can offer to newblets joining the ranks of the damned IB. So, scrolling through this particular part of the forum, I noticed no one seems to be taking film studies. I did, and I came out of it with a 5 and an intense hatred of being in production. Now I'm curious. If anyone is taking film, come out of the woodwork! Let's compare notes. I wanna know what it's like …

My name is Nicole. I'm new to IB Survival. I'm actually on here because I have a piece due for IB Art and I have less than two days to complete it. Its a 14 by 18 inch stil life that needs to be done completely in colored pencil. I think I can get most of it done, however, if I can't decide if I'm going to add another color or not, I'm 'screwed'. Input would be much appreciated at this point. Here is a picture of my subject. I took the photo, its not copywrighted material. However, since the arrangement wasn't arranged by me I feel like I need to change it around a bit. The arrangement has four colors. Violet, orange, yellow and green. I'm thinking of replacing the …

I don't believe this!! I never even knew there was such a thing as IB Music!!!! I live at the end of the world, where we are deprived of such brilliance, but by some act of God, an IB was developed. When I first heard about IB Music and then saw online syllabuses, I could not help but feel angry/depressed that I've been missing out on combining two loves: IB and music! If anybody is in IB Music, can you please discuss it with me? I am dying to hear about it.

Mine is on saturday, and I dont know what it is. Our teacher told us that basically we get up there adn talk for 20 minutes and we need to have pictures, btu what are we supposed to talk about? She hasn't told us anything really, and when I asked her she just told me we would "talk later" adn she's been saying this for far too long for me to wait any longer.

So I haven't really started working on my PPP because I though it would be the easiest so I shrugged it off 'til the end, now I'm not so sure because I've seen a few samples and it's obviously a lot longer than I thought and I'm really confused and my teacher is confusing me more. My stimulus is The Crane Wife a Japanese Folktale. Really cute but sad story, but it gives me some really good themes to work off of like the importance of trust in love and relationships and greed as the greatest downfall for humanity (why else do we tear apart our planet?). So even though the crane wife is originally a japanese story and the usage of a crane has a lot of signifigance to the ja…

Today is January 8, 2012, and I've actually started to get nervous about my IB Theatre HL. My teacher has not given us any deadlines or a time frame to go by. We have only briefly discussed an idea for my research investigation. Is my class extremely behind? Is it too late to catch up? Can anyone walk me through the next year and a half and give me an idea of when I should be getting different things done? I have no idea and any help from other IB Theatre HL kids would really, really, really be appreciated. Thank you so much

hi everyone, i just wanted to make this topic to get some help. this is my second year of IB, and i'm having a really hard time as it is. on top of how hard all the subjects are, i have to worry about the teachers and how they teach us - my school is very small, and it doesn't care about education as much as its reputation, which frustrates me (if i said frustration i probably could have turned that into a rap ...) but anyway, i don't know if i'm going to make sense but i'll just start rambling - ib art, hl: 16 projects, including your workbook. so far that is literally all i know. the i have a different teacher than i did in year one, and i was recently told that these …

My Examiner visit is on the 22nd of this month and the examiner has asked us to courier our Research Workbooks to her/him by tomorrow. Is that pretty normal? or is it hat the examiner is suspicious of something? Also I am an Visual Arts HL Option B - 60% Workbook and 40% Studio Work. And I have been able to complete only 120-130 pages, is that okay? Please reply urgently anyone, I need to give'em to the teacher for the courier in some hours.

I know it's quite early to be deciding specific subject areas, as I am in my second year of pre-IB and sophomore year of high school. However, I am curious as to what courses seem most popular for the sixth subject? I was planning on taking Visual Art (not sure as to whether take SL or HL, because HL eliminates two of my four electives for senior year) or Social Anthropology (I plan to go into psychology). I believe my school offers the previously mentioned, as well as Music and Physics.

Several questions on Group 6 in general

Hey guys, I've never really done an Arts subject in my life, be it music or theatre, but the idea of learning one really interests me! Being completely new to this though, I have several questions. 1) How do colleges in the US view Arts subjects? Would the top tier schools prefer you to have gone with a subject in another group? Also, is there a particularly respected subject in the group? 2) As a complete beginner to anything related to Art, which subject would be considered the easiest? Is it challenging to get a 7 in one? Do you recommend I go with another subject from a different group instead? More to come with responses, probably! And any help is greatly apprecia…

I'm starting IB art next year and as I'm not exactly ... artistically inclined I'm thinking of all the different mediums I could be using just so that I can reassure myself that I'm not going to die haha Since I did a class on Flash/photoshop/dreamweaver last year I figured I may as well use some of it to my advantage. So pretty much, are Flash videos (or videos of any sort) allowed to be used? Much thanks

Just curious as to see what people like in terms of certain composers, musical periods, or world music cultures. I personally adore the Romantic and Impressionistic Era. Chopin, Debussy, Mozart, Rachmoninov, and Saint Saens. Hmmm with world music cultures I really am liking Indonesian Gamelan and Spanish Flamenco.

Hi, I am taking currently taking visual arts HL but I started the IB very late and I have a lot to catch up especially for art. My theme was on world peace and I was trying to relate that to fashion. Another theme that I was thinking was traditions(Korean traditional art) expressed in a modern way. I really can not think of any kind of artwork that I could do for these themes. I'm not even sure whether or not these themes are ok to follow. Could someone give me some advice for my themes and what kind of artwork I could do? Thanks.

So, now I'm in the middle of my last year, and I haven't done a single art piece and I kind of feel like crying every time I think about what theme to pick. Does anyone have any advice of what to do? How to begin? Where to start? What to put most effort in? What techniques to use? How to show your process in your IWB? What are the deadlines at your school? How many art pieces do you recommend to have done the first term of IB3? And about how many pages in the IWB? Extremely thankful for any advice, and help with a theme. I was thinking of choosing clouds as my theme but couldn't …

I'm freaking out here. I don't know what the IB requires from 2010 Music SL students. The only thing our teacher told us are the Investigative Questions, Recordings for our solos, and analysing the opera. He also told us that we're required to do a performance for school like ensemble or band, which is making me suspicious since I have not heard of that yet. o_o;; Help?

I didn't take art as a subject in GCSE but I did take Graphics and ICT. I've always been interested in technology, and because I want to study Graphic Design in university, I decided to take art as an IB subject. However, the problem now is that I find it difficult to be creative and come up with ideas for even the simplest things like the page layout. Also, I am the only person in my class who has not taken GCSE art and so I feel quite intimidated and can never work in the class. I am falling back and I really want to catch up and do the best possible. Also, one more thing.... I am a perfectionist so I take ALOT of time on everything, which does pull me back someti…

For anyone that's taking Music as G6, what (if anything) are you planning to do to revise? The only ideas I've got involve listening to, and writing practice commentaries on, various CDs from the library. We were given some CDs as an accompaniments to our text, however the extracts of the works are very short - less than one minute. Have you been given any ideas as to how to best prepare for the exam?

However, I have two problems regarding it: 1. I am concerned on the play I will have to do on. My school does not have much resources therefore I am limited to the following plays: The Cenci Faust Waiting for Godot Since Faust and Waiting for Godot both are tragic play and tragicomedy play respectively, I am more inclined to The Cenci. However, please do not hesitate to give me your comments. 2. I am concerend on my research question. I know I will have to formulate it on my own, which I ha…

Hello, everyone! I think that for the most part, the IB program is great and it's beneficial to have to take six subjects; one from each group. However, something that bothers me is that taking a subject from the arts is not required. It seems like the ultimate gesture, even by the IB, that the arts are worth less than other subjects. Maybe to an extent you can't study for them in the same way as other subjects, but I think they should be valued the same as other subjects. How can the IB call themselves fully rounded if an art isn't required? What do you guys think of this? Do you think it's right that an art isn't required? How do you think people would take it if an…

Hi, guys..So I wanted to do IB so I went ahead and let my IB coordinator change my art class to Visual arts SL for IB. I remember last year she told me it was "the art class for non-artsy people", so I'm thinking "Sweet, that's me." Well, she made the switch for me, and I get in there and I feel SO out of place. She told me that's my only option if I want to do IB since I have no previous art fulfillment. The teacher said today "Oh, think about your theme and we'll start painting tomorrow.." I am literally freaking out inside because I certainly am not a skilled artist, and I mean that whole-heartedly. A 5th grader could draw better than me. What should I do? Do the…

For our TPPP, how many theatre traditions and external productions and school productions should we mention? It is better to just mention one or two and go in depth? Our class did a unit on naturalism, devising theatre, commedia and bunraku... and I've watched about 5 external productions. How many should I talk about, because 30 minutes isn't actually that much. And, how symbolic should our 7-10 images be?
