Okay, so I found a bunch of notes I took when my teachers were giving us IA tips and format..etc. Some of the below I had to copy of the board, so you may find these in the books. So, Biology IAs should follow this general format: DESIGN 1)Research Question 2)Hypothesis/Predictions 3)Variables 4)Apparatus 5)Method/procedure DCP 1)Collected data 2)Data processing 3)Data presentation CE 1)Conclusion 2)Evaluation Design Research question: This should be a clear focused question that says exactly what you are investigating. It shouldn't be too long and it must include the dependent and independent variables. Eg. What is the effect of pH on the activity rate of salivary am…

I keep getting the same question, about how to do well in HL Biology, so thought I should just put it out in a topic. Remember that this is what I am predicted, not sure what the real one is. From what I have seen these are the important points. 1) TRY to like it..and find interest in it. It really helps. If you do like Biology then that’s a bonus! 2) NEVER EVER go to a lesson before you are certain you understand the things covered in the previous one. A main factor of doing bad is keeping things to just gather up on you, and before an exam you struggle to unerstand soo many things when you should be doing past papers. Do whatever it takes to understand something, trust …

Menu Exam Tips Data-Analysis Questions Revision Links Exam Tips These are some tips to tackle Biology questions with respect the action verbs. (BTW, this is taken from the Oxford Biology Study Guide pp.178). Before we start with this, you need to know that there are three types of examination questions; - Multiple Choice Questions (Paper 1): You choose the answer from four possible choices. Read them all, eliminate any unwanted answers to narrow them down. Always give answers and never leave questions empty. Leave the hard ones till the end and focus on the straightforward ones. - Structured Questions (Paper 2 + 3): Each question is broken down to sectio…

Yo! So, let me get down to business. My Biology lab work or coursework will be using a factor - which mine will be Substrate Concentration - that affects an enzyme - which my teacher has given us Lipase to work on Apparently, I am not that clear with what is what and how does that affect that and what can I use to experiment on... That is my current problem. (I know, shame on me for not listening to my teacher during class) I tried reading the book, but it explains how it reacts and it is rather irrelevant for the information I need to get this experiment going... So, as of the moment, could anyone of you guys, explain that to me? Basically, How can my chosen factor af…

Well, there is a chemistry one. We ought to have a Biology one as well So what options do you take, whether SL or HL. I have HL but the first option we had was sort of compulsary in the school for all Biology students and that was Evolution. It's an interesting topic but I have a bit trouble studying it for some reason. The second topic we haven't decided yet on though.

Hi everyone. I have HL Bio this year. My teacher suggested that if your aim is a 7, he recommended a course companion, but then I have talked to other people saying that the course companion is another version of the text book and isn't going to help that much. They say if I buy study guide instead...I'll know exactly what to study. Can the experts let me know which one should I buy? Price is not really an issue as they are both $50 CDN from amazon.ca. Thanks and have a great day.

I took the Biology SL exam last year and our teacher taught us Option A (Diet and Human Nutrition) and Option D (Evolution) in class, but I ended up not taking Option G (Ecology and Conservation) instead of D because it was much easier. Just wondering what options people who haven't taken it yet are learning or did if you already took it.

Hi everyone! As you are aware, we are nearly done with the IB. I am finishing my IAs for biology but I have a problem with my bio teacher. She is TOO harsh at marking my lab reports. Therefore, I am getting EXTREMELY low grades for my lab reports. When I ask her to explain why I deserve only one point for design, not only does she digress but also she yells at me for not studying and understanding the IB. Then, she questions me if I am well suited to IB. Basically, my biology teacher is CRAZY. I am scared because there are ten students in my biology class and only five samples are sent to the IB to be moderated. If my sample is not sent, I am basically f***ed. Is there an…

Hi, So, I am a junior and almost finished with my first year of HL Bio. We have multiple books for that class, which include Campbell-Reese (the textbook and the lab manuals), Biology for the IB (Minka Peeters Weem), Biozone, a few AP lab manuals, and my teacher prints out previous questions (specific to certain topics) along with the answers which we are supposed to read and study (but aren't tested on). The problem with my teacher is that she assigns the Campbell-Reese online work(we don't have any in class tests) , and considering you can re-take the tests as many times as you want, I don't know if I'm really learning anything. Also, for Biozone, she gives us a wee…

Hello people, Biology exams are comming up soon so I came up with an idea for us to share what WE think will come up this year on the paper, as You know the IB examiners do not spend much time creating questions and mainly end on previous ones. Haha. WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE ON THE TEST THIS YEAR ?? PS. I know this may be lame but it helps to reduce. Believe me!!!

My teacher told me the biology ia has to involve the variables. i.e. the investigation must be about the effect of sth on sth. That doesn't sound right to me. Isn't it supposed to be an exploration related to ANYTHING we've covered in the course? I want to do an identification of lactobacilli in yogurt by DNA profiling. Is it possible that my teacher is mistaken? What about other restrictions on the choice of topic? DNA profiling tech is unavailable in my school lab. Is it ok to use more advanced equipment in outside labs? Or would it be considered beyond our level or even academically dishonest? Or, does it have to be a lab experiment at all? I heard about so…

Hello all, I just wanted to know how many lab reports does a normal IB Biology class turn into the IBO? So far, in my bio class, we've done one formal report. I know we're supposed to have like 40 hours of labs, I think. Of those 40, I think 10 are for the Group 4 Project? Any and all help is welcomed. Thanks.

Hi, I was wondering... is it enough just to study the biology syllabus for the hl exams? (my teacher just based her notes on that anyway =\ ) I'm worried that there would be new things on the exam that are unfamiliar to me. Also, about how many hours should I spend studying? I know it differs with everyone, but I'd like a range so I could try to finish up by a certain time and move on to other subjects (like history ) :') I'd really appreciate your help/tips-thank you ! ^u^

Hey guys, Thanks for entering this topic. I have to do an extended essay in Biology which is more of a huge lab report. I chose the topic of breast cancer. For this topic, I have the statistical representation, answers to 'wh' questions and stuff for my homeland. But I am still undecided about my research question. You guys have at some point made really good lab reports in IB, so I thought I'd ask in general. Please do participate and come up with possibly suitable research questions. I'd appreciate it a lot, really. Thanks

At my school, it's never been done, but the course is also condensed into one year and by no means it is an "IB School" (meaning, IB is definitely not the program our school revolves around). So, I continue to wonder, do I attribute this apparent difficulty in earning a 7 to the test itself or to the students taking it (or, of course, both...)? Any opinions from people who have taken the test? Also, our coordinator also said something about blaming Group 4 for her lack of 7s. Does anyone know what she might mean by this?

Just thought i might give my two cents worth on Biology study that i've found really helpfull. so my bio teacher writes exam questions for the may exams in the northern hemisphere and has given us a bit of insight into how to know that you know all the content that your meant to. write notes according to the syllabus points. seriously its simple, ingenious, and no one ever thinks about it. okay so all of the questions in the exams have to come straight from the sylabus, they cant use words or topics that arent in ther. And luckily the sylabus in biology is very very specific (unlike history or psychology for example) and detailed. So when your studying if you go through e…

I'm in HL biology, I'm looking into buying either the Heinemann HL Bio book or the CJ Clegg Bio book. Yes, I do use Allott and our school supplies the big Campbell and Reece book, but C&R is huuuuuuuge and a pain to look through, and I already use Allott for studying like mad, however, I'm wondering if anyone has seen the two textbooks I mentioned above, and would give a suggestion to which one is best to use for supplementary reading (the notes we get in class are from the overhead with few diagrams so they're hard to memorize). For SL chem, we use the Heinemann book, and I love it, but everyone seems raving mad about Clegg for biology...

I'm sure this has been answered numerous times, but I just can't find it in the search bar, so... Are you allowed to choose your own options for the examination? My teacher selected 2 that he assumed were the easiest, and while I may agree, I want to challenge myself, and perhaps even enjoy learning about something else (I don't know why, but human physiology is so interesting)! If it is possible and I do end up studying, let's say, Option H, does the teacher/IB coordinator have to approve of it before the exam? It'd be such a hassle to do that, and I can only imagine the scene both of them would pull for my wanting to be just a bit different.

Hello, I'm planning to take Biology SL for May 09 and I was wondering if the following is correct The core consists of Topics 1 -6 [statistical analysis, cells, the chemistry of life, genetics, ecology and evolution, human health and physiology]? This is where paper 1 draws its questions from? The options are A - G? Which do you believe is the easiest to do well in? My teacher from last year recommended C and some other one that I can't remember now. Are we supposed to just study two of the options and that's it [for IB paper 3]? or are we supposed to focus on all 7? I feel studying an additional 5 options would be unnecessary. I was wondering what are some of the labs that you have completed to turn in as your Biology IA's? Can you also explain some of what the experiment is? It is getting pretty close to deadline time and so far my class has only completed one Biology IA and that was done last year with our old teacher. Our new one has not even discussed IA's in detail. Sometimes she gives suggestions on the little labs we do to turn it into our IA's, but honestly, those labs are really stupid. Some of my classmates were thinking about taking some other IA ideas and do all of our IA's on our own. Any suggestions? Well, the one lab that we completed last year was on measuring the densit…

So I'm taking my final environmental systems and societies exam in about a week and it's the only subject of mine that I'm feeling slightly uncomfortable about. I've been endeavoring to go over my notes to ensure I know the content, but find that when I do past papers, it actually varies quite significantly from straight testing of syllabus details. From May 2016 session, science IA is changed so that students can do online database analysis as their IA right? I want to write something similar to this one --> https://ibpublishing.ibo.org/server2/rest/app/tsm.xql?doc=d_4_biolo_tsm_1408_1_e&part=8&chapter=10 which takes the database from WHO and sees the correlation between the incidence of a disease and HDI (Human development Index). Is there anyone who wrote online database analysis IA this year and scored well (7) ? Since this is a new thing, my teacher is kind of negative about it... But I still want to write it, as I can't think of any original IA experiments. Thank you!

Hey guys, My Bio IA involves seed germination. The independent variable is intensity of light. My teacher suggested I put one container (5 seeds) near a window, one far from a window, one in a dark box, one in shade. However, won't the light intensity be too variable? It doesn't remain constant throughout the day. Instead of this, if I were to put them in boxes with a single lamp as a light source, say for 6 hours a day, will there be too much heat in the box? Which one would be better? Please respond ASAP as all experiments need to be completed by the end of this month. Thanks!

Hey Guys, I was just going through Chapter 3 (Ecosystems) in the ESS Course Companion when I happen to arrive on the Ecological Pyramids section (on page 48). I noticed that there was a split in the bar for the producers. Does anyone know the reason for this? What does the split suggest? l'll be really thankful to anyone who could help! P.S. I think someone posted a similar question earlier, but there wasn't a proper reply, so I thought I'd start a new topic...in case any one knows. Hi guys, I am fairly new here but I thought I would try asking for some opinions on a mid-IB crisis I currently have: I am just about to start my third term of IB, and when this term is over we are required to decide which SL/HL subjects we are taking. Right now I am taking HL maths and core bio (just SL content), but I am wondering if I should be doing HL bio instead? (and in doing so, drop maths down to SL) I love both of them but I feel like a good mark in biology might be more attainable, just because the effort you put in will be rewarded... whereas with maths I don't feel like this will be the case (for me anyway). I find studying for bio a lot easier as most of it …
