We have recently started to come up with our biology IA’s in clas, but I am struggling with coming up with a topic. I know it needs to be personal and since I swim I wanted to do something like the affects of chlorine on the growth of plants, but I’m not sure if that topic is too easy? Can anyone help lead me in the right direction?

I'd asked my Bio teacher if I could do my IA on the effect of music on plant growth and at the time she'd said yes, but after I submitted my information sheet she said that it was an idea with a shaky foundation and that I need to turn in a new idea ASAP. Please help!!! I was thinking something along the lines of photosynthesis..... I don't know, I'm just really confused right now. Is there anything I can do that's relatively simple but not like, utter trash?

Hi guys, I'm currently writing my bio IA on allelopathy and the effect of mint on the growth of cucumber and I need some help. First, I set up 2 flowerpots with only cucumber seeds and named them control group 1 and 2, and 3 flowerpots with both cucumber and mint- experimental groups 1,2 and 3. My first question: can I treat control groups 1 and 2 as a control sample simply without distinction between flowerpots (and the same for experimental 1,2 and 3)? Second question, my experiment lasted for 6 weeks and I measured the height of cucumbers in every from the 5 groups after each week has passed. So now I have 6 groups of measurements for each of the flowerpots and I…

Hi, I recently began doing my bio IA experiment and I'm doing it involving plants. I already grew the plants but what I had in mind before isn't going to work out anymore. Any ideas on what I should do as my project? It could either be around those plants that I grew already or something else. Any help is appreciated , thanks !

Hello, I am currently taking Bio SL and struggling. Over the last month, I have had the EE, IA for History and IA for Bio, during the time I have also had my computer break so I had to go a while working off my phone and then my sisters Ipad. As you can imagin this slowed me down and I often found myslef asking for extentions in english and other classes. Additionally, I was unable to studies well for some IB Bio quizzes and thus did badly. However, I am unsure if I am struggling in the class because of these circumstances or if I really am just struggling with the content. Because of this, I have been considering dropping the class for ESS instead, and then if possible m…

Hello, I have been unable to come up with an IB bio question for my IA. I had submitted the ones below but my teacher said I decided to add more complexity, however, we have only studies unit 1 and 2 and I don't have a great understanding of what we have learned in class so far. How does light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis of plants? Or How does the light intensity affect the rate of water uptake (transpiration) in plants? Or How does temperature affect the activity of enzyme amylase (on starch)? I have also been considering the following question, however, I am unsure if it is good and easily testable: How does in…

Hello, I have several ideas for my Bio IA, but I am not sure how well any of them actually are and if I could get a high mark on them or not. They are: 1) How do different concentrations of orlistat affect the activity of the enzyme lipase on the substrate butter as measured by……….? Here I am not sure how to measure the activity of the enzyme lipase. Any ideas? 2) How do different concentrations of the inhibitor (?) impact the enzyme lactase and its’ ability to break down lactose as measured by the glucose concentration of the remaining substance? Do any of you know about any inhibitors to lactase? If not any other ideas to make this question …

Hello everyone! I'm going into the 10th grade this year, and am planning on doing the IB program 11th-12th grade. In the future I am hoping to be a pediatrician, so I was looking online for what IB classes you should take in order for medical school. Most sites said Biology and Chemistry HL. I like chemistry a lot and am hoping to HL in that, but I'm not so sure about biology. So, first of all, would HL biology be necessary for medical school? Also, if I did do HL bio, would it be important to take biology this year too? (Pre-IB) I'm currently signed up to do physics, and I did biology in 8th grade, but I've heard that HL bio is really difficult so I'm wondering if I shou…

Hi there. I am currently working on my IA assignment from biology HL. I was thinking about caffeine antibacterial effect, as how it can help us, humans in fighting with bacteria in our organisms. I thought I can use different types of coffee - like espresso, latte, cappuccino, etc. in order to investigate whether they will have the same influence. Do you think it is enough? Because I feel like it can be too simple for HL and how else can I use caffeine properties? I was reading quite a lot about it and I do not really want to change the topic. My other idea was to test coffees from popular cafeteries, like Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts to investigate if they differ from…

Hi Everyone ! i misunderstood the standard level bio IA instructions for the amount of data points. It turns out you are just supposed to do 250 data points for each variable. i have 5 variables of course, and my ia is testing the length of grass seeds in different vitamin-soil mixtures. so I misunderstood everything and I did 250 data points for each variable, so all together I have a 1,000 data points. For example I tested Vitamin C, in 5 trials, with 50 data points per trial. So all together 250 points for one variable. The 50 points per trial were measuring the length of 50 grass seeds. now my teacher isn’t replying. I did all my data, and pr…

Hi can anyone please try to give me some ideas for the biology HL IA? I had an idea about compost and taking the temperature of it, but I think it would take too long and require a lot of attention. I also am interested in enzymes. I love biology so much and I really enjoyed the first year of ib and I did well on the tests, but now that I'm starting to look at experiment ideas I feel so stupid and I don't understand them. Might end up dropping out. Oh well! :/

I want to finish my ESS IA before the new school year begins and I don't really know how to write a good ESS IA (by good I mean I have to get a 7 or a 6). I thought of doing it on air pollution and for now my research question is: To what extent do distances from the Western Pomeranian coast in Poland affect the growth of lichens? However, a) I don't really like to use lichens as indicators of air pollution, is there any other, preferably SIMPLER, way of examining it? b) if you have any important advice for ESS IA pls share your wisdom I would greatly appreciate it

I am wanting to do my Bio IA on osmosis and thought that I would do the experiment with eggs where you soak several of them it in vinegar until the shell dissolves and then put those eggs into a solution with different concentration. Along the lines of investigating the effect of different concentrations the solution has on the osmotic activity in the eggs. I am concerned that this might be too easy though or not even allowed as a mandatory lab for estimating osmolarity was supposed to be done by bathing tissues in hypotonic and hypertonic solutions... any thoughts or past experience with this? Thank you!

Hello ! I have just started IB Yr1 and have chosen maths, physics and economics as my HL subjects. I want to choose either business management or ESS as one of my SL subjects. I have been told ESS is easy to score in and not very stressful. People have also told me that I will get time to concentrate on my HL subjects if I choose ESS as it is comparatively easier and also a scoring subject. Is this correct ? Thanks !

Anyone have tips for a bio ia, I’m in HL bio and I wanted to do well, some things I needed clarification on: -how long should the introduction and conclusion should be ( a page long, 2 or 3 paragraphs...) -what math do you need to incorporate -do they check your references to see if they match with the information you put down -does ib prefer some units then others for ias -or any just general tips to make a good bio ia ALSO, anyone know any tips to get full marks on personal engagement. I always lose marks here and it should be the easiest part!!!

Hey all, I am in desperate need of help. I completely messed up my experiment on aquatic plant growth, and if I don't do it properly I won't pass DP1. I am investigating the affect of pH on aquatic plant growth. To variate the pH, my technician prepared citric acid pH buffers of 4,5,6,7,8. I used those to get the pH I wanted, but this is where it goes wrong. I said I would have 40ml of water, and add 10 ml of the buffer to get the pH I want. But I noticed that when at 5 ml of buffer 5 (to get pH 5) I'd need much more (obviously). So instead I just added 5 ml of pH 4 buffer, not understanding my mistake. My teacher pointed out this mistake, and told me to change my me…

Hi :) For my IA Im investigating the effect of temperature on mitotic index in onion samples. My teacher told me to count the number of cells (total & in mitosis) in the whole specimen put under the microscope. However, these is an enormous number of cells to count (400-500 cells) and so: 1) counting the cells for 1 sample takes me about 30 minutes, which is exhausting, 2) I need to count the cells in lower magnification, which may make the results inaccurate Don't you think it would be better to calculate the mitotic index for just a single field of view in the microscope?

My teacher told me the biology ia has to involve the variables. i.e. the investigation must be about the effect of sth on sth. That doesn't sound right to me. Isn't it supposed to be an exploration related to ANYTHING we've covered in the course? I want to do an identification of lactobacilli in yogurt by DNA profiling. Is it possible that my teacher is mistaken? What about other restrictions on the choice of topic? DNA profiling tech is unavailable in my school lab. Is it ok to use more advanced equipment in outside labs? Or would it be considered beyond our level or even academically dishonest? Or, does it have to be a lab experiment at all? I heard about so…

Hi guys. In this first year of biology HL we've already started our biology IA, and the first rough draft is due on April while the final one is due after summer break. I've already done a biology experiment for my IA but I don't like it that much so I decided to redo my IA over the summer, hope it's not too late ;(. I got 2 new topics in hand, one is to investigate the effect of the direction of light (artificial) on plant growth, and the other one is to investigate the effect on osmosis in organic egg vs. conventional egg (regular egg). Which one do you think is better? and by saying better I mean interesting IA and easier to do. Thanks in advance

Hi, guys. I am currently having a bit of trouble figuring out how to control oxygen concentration for the yeast and measure rate of respiration (based on carbon dioxide gas production) at the same time. If you have any ideas, please suggest how I could do this? I have never worked with oxygen before or tried adding a gas while measuring another. My biology teacher has told me that physically it may be difficult... But I feel like this is 10000x better than doing sucrose concentration. I have a few ideas such as isolating the yeast in a container with a specific oxygen concentration and having an aspirator/vacuum pump come out of it somehow for the carbon dioxide to be ca…
