Hey everyone, According to the IB biology guide for exams commencing in 2016 onwards, it states in 5.3 that: "Application: Recognition features of bryophyta, filicinophyta, coniferophyta and angiospermophyta." There is no mention of requiring recognition features of animal phyla. However, my bio book by Cambridge University press (printed in 2015) and bioninja still has information on recognizing animal phyla. Could anyone here reconfirm this? Have you guys learned about animal phyla? Thank you!

Hi everyone! Wondering if someone can point me in the right direction for a few things about my IA. My IA topic is looking at the relationship between time and memory recollection using recall memory and a time gradient. 1) Does anyone actually know whether this is a good IA topic? My teacher says yes, and so does the head of Biology IB at my school, but lots of people on this site and others have advised heavily against this sort of topic?? Any experience/suggestions would be helpful concerning this. 2) Is there a standardised consent form that I should be using for this Biology IA? I seem to be able to find those relating to Psych. but not to Biology. Can…

Hey there! So I need some help... My Biology IA is investigating the effect of light wavelength (i.e. colour of the light) on the rate of photosynthesis through leaf disks. I'm doing this by putting filters (cellophane) over the light. However, I'm kind of confused as to what my control would be! Would it be the light simply without a filter (white light)? Or literally no light (so in the dark)? I feel like it would have to be without the filter because with no light the control would just be testing the effect of light on photosynthesis rather than coloured light! Please Help!! From, A very thankful IB student!

Hi all, So the topic I've chosen for my IA is "what is the relationship between the prevalence of migraine in specific countries and the barometric air pressure of that country?" The wording is pretty bad, but its a rough version, so i'm working on it. However, I cant find any ACTUAL data on the prevalence of migraines according to country, because all of them are kinda extrapolated, so they're not really accurate. Can I just use that? Or is that risky? Also, While there is information on barometric pressure, I dont know how to use the data. Should i just calculate the average pressure in each country? I really wanted to do this topic, and my teacher said …

So I am working on my IA on determining the effect of heat on Vitamin C content in a certain vegetable. I used a titration method but since I was working with the liquid form of the vegetable I can't seem to find out how to compare the Vitamin C content I found with a literature value. All the literature values are in mg/g and I determined Vitamin C as g/mL. There doesn't seem to be an established literature value of Vitamin C in the vegetable's liquid form as the vegetable is not very popular. Is there any way I can still compare my data to a literature value?

I've already submitted my IA, but have begun to have second thoughts about it. My topic was related to the biochemical composition of a type of food (don't want to be too specific and give away my idea) and how it changed as the food was cooked. Though I discussed protein denaturation and the structure of lipids and proteins, which relates to molecular biology, I also found myself drawing heavily on chemistry technqiues in my method (such as reflux!) and in my analysis. I talked about organics a lot. So if you feel like skipping that long-winded explaination, please give your thoughts on this: Can a biology IA be entirely rejected or given a 0 if it essentially soun…

I've been generally panicking about things I've noticed in my IA (which has already been submitted ). I just noticed that I forgot to include an in-text citation for where I got my method from. I used Kjheldahl's method for analysing proteins, and while I gave credit to Johan Kjheldahl for making the method, I didn't state the source I found this information from in the body of text (it's in the works cited though). I also have several instances of using knowledge from the syllabus without citing it. Should I have cited my textbook? I need to put my mind at ease because I'm really worried it could be deemed academic malpractice. Does the severity of infringement decide t…

Hi everyone. I made a somewhat related post, but the other one was for English, so I didn't want anyone thinking I was making duplicate posts. Anyhow, I was wondering -- would anyone have any general tips for me (being a first year IB Biology student, not Pre-IB) so I can be successful in the course, and for the exam? For example, my teacher gives us a note packet which we're supposed to fill out as he goes through the lectures. And sometimes I fill it out, and the other time's it's because I focus too much on the class or zone out too deeply, and then I forget to fill out the note packet. Or sometimes I just don't know where the current lecture fits into the no…

Hi, Just wondering whether random/systematic errors are required for a bio ia? my teacher simply said "compare" them but I'm not sure how I would do this. Would this be similar to a chem IA (which I've done), so I'd have all my calculations listed out?? Also, I don't really think I can find a literature experiment for my IA...

Okay so I am currently choosing topics for IB and I want to make them revolve around veterinary sciences or like animal biology because thats what I would like to do in the future. I chose to take HL Bio and SL Chem, which Ive been thinking about and debating about for a long time and I dont know if it was the right choice or not. I read that some universities don't really require or look for biology if you want to go for veterinary sciences and would like to see more of the Chemistry/Mathematics side?? Should I have taken HL Chem and SL Bio? Or just one science? Helpppp Thanks !

Hi I am not sure whether the topic of I want of to choose is appropriate for my IA. I was thinking of comparing the quality of apple fruits from mechanically thinned plants vs fruits not interrupted by thinning in their growth (my grandma has an apple orchard). Even though my teacher accepted the topic I have an impression she is not very familiar with this process and I am not sure whether it is not too simple. Thinning of the plants is a common way in gardening of improving plants' quality and increasing their development efficiency. Therefore, isn't it too obvious? I could explore the extent to which it does influence the quality of a fruit.. But I'm s…

Im planning on doing either effects of different glucouse concentration on cellular respiration (CO2 production), or effects of different substrates on cellular respiration (CO2 production) using glucose maltose fructose sucrose. I will be using yeast to create the CO2. Teacher wants me to branch this idea and take it to a more unique level. My questions: 1. I know that this is probably overdone, but I am struggling due to lack of creativity to vary this simple (?) experiment procedure and make it unique enough for the reader. 2. Is it acceptable to state that my curiosity came from learning the cellular respiration concept in-class and wanting to apply and see…

Hey guys! There's the biology IA that I need to do and I've been trying to find topics for it that are interesting, and that seem simple to do. If you guys have any ideas, any advice or even any websites where I can get information and some ideas for my IA. I take standard level Biology, if that contributes to anything. Thank you so much for your help.

Hey guys, I recently found out my old IA's method wouldn't work.... So I thought of a few ideas, one of which was perhaps using Biochemical Oxygen Demand as a Bio IA. The worry is that there will be too much chemical analysis rather than dealing with organic material. Another idea was to study yeast activity with altering amounts of salt. I know yeast is studied a lot, and also that it is too simplistic: I will just be varying salt and measuring CO2 released. I need some suggestions. Thankss

I'm invested in a biology IA that seems doomed to fail and I want to salvage what I can of it. I've already collected data and we are no longer allowed to change topics or start doing another experiment. My research question involves the biochemical change that happens during the process of making peanut butter. I realize now how little it has to do with bio, I though it had good connections to biochemistry, but even these are very weak. I already collected data on the protein, fat, and sugar content of both peanuts and peanut butter. Is there any way I can make this better? I don’t even know what to write about or conclude, and am open to any ideas (perhaps even tweaking…

Hi! I am currently designing my Biology IA experiment to hopefully conduct this week. I am sure that I want to investigate the affect temperature has on blood pressure because I have my own electric blood pressure cuff. My dilemma is that there are many different ways I could study this relationship and all of my methodology ideas so far have been shot down by my teacher. I would really like to see some decent ideas that can help me better develop the ideas I already have. Hi, so basically I'm really confused about the spacing that we need to use for our IAs, as well as if we're marked down for using the spacing 1.15. Also, in the conclusion, I used different journals and actually explained my results. Is this fine or is it not even required? Please give me some advice. Thank you.

I found out (first time I was told) that our Bio IA topic and protocol is due Thursday... 3 DAYS FROM NOW... And I have no idea what I'm gonna do. I was thinking about doing something to do with human perception of color and I have experiments I can manipulate to use but I don't know if they'll work as an IA. Also, freshman year in Bio we need a sort of experiment in which we tested the strength of taste for different students by giving them a nasty flavored paper and seeing how they reacted to it (some people wanted to vomit and some could hardly tell there was a flavor). And I don't know much about it but I wanna know if it's within the realm of possibility to do someth…

Hi everyone, My Biology IA is based on the rate of photosynthesis and I will be discussing about its limiting factors in my background information and their affects on the rate of photosynthesis. Most of my knowledge comes from IGCSE, or from an online teaching/textbook-course thingy called Kognity. Would that be citeable? As you can only access Kognity pages if your school as registered. An example Kognity page is this: https://isb.kognity.com/study/app/biology-sl-fe-2016/molecular-biology/photosynth-core/limiting-core/ Also, is this link citeable? Bio IA on Seed Germination HELP

So I'm doing my bio ia on the effect of different concentrations of sulfuric acid on seed germination. It's been nearly 3 weeks and I only have data for the control test (spraying with distilled water), and very few seeds germinated for any of the other concentrations (0.2M, 0.5M, 1M, 2M, 5M). These few seeds that have germinated won't really have any effect when I do the means for the 5 trials of each. Is it ok if I have very little variation in my data? It would be like an average of 14 out of 20 seeds for the control test and then less than 1 for every other increment. Does this reflect badly on me in any of the criteria? Or should I try and 'manipulate' my results? I …

Hi, Im doing standard level Biology. I have two different research questions for my IA. Could you guys choose which one is better to get higher grade? 1. How far does the concentration of starch solution and a fixed volume of iodine solution affect the absorbance at 'orange' wavelength (610 nm)

Hi! I'm a junior and just started the IB. I absolutely love ESS and did pretty well on my first couple of tests, projects and assignments, and my teacher offered me something that hasn't been offered to any other student at my school before (hence why I'm asking here!). He offered me to condense the whole 1 and a half year course into 1 year and complete my ESS exams in May of 2018. I will have a study hall in place of that block for all of grade 12, which will give me more time to work on my projects, college applications, CAS instead of having to worry about another subject. I would love to know your opinions on this. A couple of background facts: -…

Hello: The deadline for submitting the first draft of the Biology IA is approaching but I'm still not sure if my topic is viable. The topic I chose was: "The effects of drinks in the blood's pH" ( it's a rough translation from spanish). It's going to be an experiment where I take various samples of blood, add acidic drinks like coffee, soda and alcohol and alcaline drinks like fruit juice, and measure the change they make to the pH of the blood, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea. Please help and thank you

In my IA I'd like to alter the amount of bacteria in soil - in which I'll grow plants. Initially, I was going to vary the amount of sterile soil and compost - which has, for obvious reasons, microbes in it. However, compost also has nutrients in it which I can't avoid. How do you think I could change the amount of bacteria without introducing new nutrients/matter. I will have a control set-up as well. What do you guys think?

Hey! I'm starting my IB1 year soon and I'm wondering which subjecs I should take. I absolutely suck at maths like no other and I don't particularly like sciences. Hey everyone! I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but since I'm doing my extended essay in biology, I thought that the people here might have a better idea of how to answer my question. Basically, for my experiment I have two groups of plants (7 plants in each group) that were subjected to different conditions and I measured their mass every few days. I have used this data to graph the average growth rate for each of the two groups (I graphed some other stuff too, but this is irrelevant). I also compared the final mass/yield of the plants using a t-test. I was wondering how/if I should compare the growth rates of the two groups. Since the…
