Anyways.. What are your option material? I'm hopefully taking option B (Medicines and Drugs) and C (Human Biochemistry) alone. Anyone ever done both/one of them? What are yours and what do you think of them?!

My teacher told me that an IB study guide would be very helpful going through Chemistry and I started looking online for a book. But, when I look on Half.com, there are two books for IB Chemistry, a course companion made in 2010, and a study guide made in 2007. I was wondering which is the better one to get in order to study for the IB exam and assist with explaining concepts. I am not sure what the differences are between the course companion and the study guide, so I need to know which one is better to buy. If it helps, I'm taking SL Chemistry and the teacher is very good but there are a few topics where I need to refresh on from Chemistry I (Sophomore Year).

This thread could be used for the new syllabus IA from 2016 onwards. Please note that I cannot help individual students with their IA. The choice of topic should be your own work so please do not ask for suggestions for your IA. The following information is taken from the May 2015 subject report (I'm sure it is copyrighted to the IB, but I see no harm in sharing it with IB students). Research question: Encourage students to choose a research question that has a degree of challenge, is of interest to them and one where they do not know at the outset what the outcome will be.A good research question will probably try to determine a trend or relationship. Students shou…

My exam is approaching and we're starting the environmental chemistry option which I find it kind of easy, but as the times are too short, my teacher will give us the choice to study the option we want, so I was wondering which of the options for HL were the easiest ones?

Working through some past Paper 1s and a couple questions make no sense to me! Any clarification to any (or all) would be most appreciated! Here they are: The temperature of a 2.0 g sample of aluminum increases from 25 °C to 30 °C . How many joules of heat energy were added? (Specific heat of Al = 0.90 J g−1 K−1 ) A. 0.36 B. 2.3 C. 9.0 D. 11 (Answer: C) Separate solutions of HCl (aq) and H2SO4 of the same molar concentration and same volume were completely neutralized by NaOH (aq). X KJ and Y KJ of heat were evolved respectively. Which statement is correct? a) X=Y b) Y=2X c) X=2Y d) Y=3X (Answer: B) Thanks in advance

Hello, I just started IB this year and at first felt confident for HL Chemistry, however, I was quick to learn that HL Chem is NOT a "walk in the park". Recently, I took a stoichiometry quiz (My teacher used previous IB questions) and epically failed it! I completely and utterly blanked and didn't even understand the questions asked (I couldn't answer ANY of them). If it is possible, can anyone give me any feedback on the course and what to expect of it? Is topic one the most math oriented topic? If so, are the other topics somewhat easier to comprehend? I really like Chemistry and desire to do well in the class and more importantly in the exam (in 2012)!

I haven't seen a thread about organic chemistry yet, so I'm starting one since I kind of need help. I would like to know certain things: 1) Does non-cyclical geometric isomerism occur only in alkenes? 2)It says in the study guide that some of the characteristics of geometric isomers are: - In the cis- isomer, H-bonds could form within the molecule it self. - in the trans- isomer, H-bond occurs between molecules. What I dont understand: wouldnt H-bonds form only when you have an OH group on the attached R-groups? So, how would that characteristic be valid for all cis and trans isomers? 2) I always don't quite understand elimination reactions. I know the mechanism an…

Hello, So as the 2014 students are aware, it's exam season and i've finally got my first few days break. I have four days before chemistry. I study chemistry at HL and I have to say it is my absolute weakest subject. I've done loads of past papers and the highest i've ever got is a 4. Ideally, I would love to get a 5, but right now it seems impossible and when revising, i have no idea where to start. I was wondering if anyone had any helpful tips, tools, handy websites, or things that are essential to know for the exams. I'd be very grateful of any help! Thank you!

I am doing a lab report on how the concentration of hydrochloric acid effects the amount of hydrogen gas that is produced {in this reaction only: Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) --> ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g) }. I used the following concentrations of hydrochloric acid: 0.100moldm-3 1.00moldm-3 3.00moldm-3 5.00moldm-3 6.00moldm-3 As hypothesized, more hydrogen gas was released in higher concentrations of hydrochloric acid then lower concentrations... except no gas at all (at least none that was measurable using the method of downward displacement of water) was released for the 0.100moldm-3 concentration and I can't seem to figure out why this happened? It could be because of human/random error…

Ok, so I don't have the best chemistry teacher in the world... Could someone briefly explain what a van der Waals bond/force is? We've written notes during class, and mine say that van der Waal forces appear when vibrating electrons circulate around the nucleus of an atom, because of attractions to another atom. We've also written that "van der Waal bonds hate water." Could someone briefly explain what a hydrogen/dipole bond is? First off I'd like to know if a hydrogen bond is the same as a dipole bond, 'cause I think our teacher said so. The notes we've written say that dipole bonds appear when molecules are attracted to eachother's opposite charges. We've also writ…

Next year I am taking IB Chem HL and I am kinda nervous because I heard it was REALLLY HARD! At first I was going to take HL Bio, but I changed my mind because I felt that bio would be boring. Anyways, how hard is this class if you have taken it or know people that have taken it? This year I took honors chem and I got a pretty good average (99) and I took the SAT II (720 - not that great but I will retake). What are my chances of actually doing well in this class, and what advice could you give me before I go into the class in september? Thank you sooo much!

Hey I'm just curious as to see what you people do to do well in Chemistry. Do you use any resources or do you just follow the classes and rely on that soly? I'm wondering what I should be doing and giving priority to in terms of hard topics or other things. Did you use any revision guides, did you use any question banks. What do you think is necessary in order to do well in Chemistry and also enjoy the subject. Thanks in advance.

I am going to be a junior this year and am planning on taking HL Biology next year (meaning I have SL Biology this year). This year I have ceramics and Math Studies, which will clear up 2 spots next year, but also means I will need another SL class. I want to be a veterinarian and am considering doing SL chemistry along with HL biology for my other credit, and taking a fun class in place of math so that I can have more "breathing room" to focus on exams/papers/essays etc. What's your thought on that? Is SL chemistry really hard?

Hi Guys, I really need you help, I have to give in a lab report day after tomorrow. It is about the rate of reaction and the factors which affect the reaction. I did it at the beginning of the year and can't remember a thing from it. All I have are results, which are HCL concentrations over time, Does anyone have any idea how this could have been carried out? Thanks for your help in advance.

Its due on Monday, and its a calorimetry lab. My teacher didn't give us any outlines or examples or anything, she just said it would be graded on "data processing and conclusion and evaluation" I don't have a clue about where to start or anything for the lab report, does anyone have anything that would help? Also, I have a graph with temperature vs. time. I'm not sure whether to extrapolate the graph to get the peak temperature, as my teacher told me not to. But it makes sense to do so, and it says in my study guide to do so.

Hey guys, So I have a lab I am currently working on (at the moment I am on the calculations) that has me stumped... My lab is about how the mass of CaCO3 affects the enthalpy change of this reaction: CaCO3 + 2HCl -> 2NaCl + CO2 + H2O. I have carried out all of my experiments using 5 separate values for the mass of calcium carbonate (i used a temperature probe during the experiment so i have graphs of the temperature change for each of them) but now i'm confused... usually i have to compare a theoretical result to an experimental result... but I don't know how I actually find the theoretical result in order to compare it to the value of the enthalpy change for my rea…

Hey, i have a quick test for the class of 2012 and anybody else who wants to give it a shot..ready?? ok.. 1)how do molecules in a gas exchange energy? 2) what effect, if any, does the exchange have on the maxwell-boltzman distribution curve? 3) give two changes that would cause the number of molecules with energy greater than activation energy to increase.. good luck!! they are very simple though... Hey! Throughout the course I've been using the mentioned textbooks to study for tests and exams. However, I have encountered a few errors (I made sure they were by checking with my teacher and websites) and thought that we should compile a list to prevent ourselves from learning something that is incorrect or irrelevant. I was wondering if you can do an option on the exam that you weren't technically prepared for by the teacher himself, who instead pursued another option unit. In Chemistry, I'd like to do the biochemistry option because I already have knowledge in that from Biology. I have textbooks that would allow me to prepare adequately for the chemistry portion. However, my teacher wants to do another option - perhaps further organic chemistry, which already sounds daunting and undesirable in comparison to biochem. So, on Chem Paper 3, could I just do the biochem option?

Chemistry SL with a crappy teacher or a hard course of Chemistry HL with a good teacher?

Just to give an info about myself: other HLs I take are: Biology, Mathematics, and Economics. Currently I take Chemistry SL but the teacher is really crappy. I don't get what he's teaching about, for his explanations aren't very great. He's new to the school, and he's never taught IB before. On the other hand, the Chemistry HL teacher has taught for at least 10 years. (of IB and in the school). Should I change Chemistry SL to HL just because the SL teacher is really bad at teaching? (There is only one teacher for the Chemistry SL course, I'm devastated. ) If I do change from SL to HL, I'll have to study more, obviously, HL course ain't that easy, and I'm not ver…

I'm taking IB HL Chemistry this year. What's surprised me is that I got a borderline 4 on my first exam. Generally, I get the some of the best grades in my class and I got a 7 in MYP Chemistry last year. So it's very difficult for me to understand how I'm barely passing this course. I am very weak in math, and also lack general basic knowledge in chemistry (my previous school's chemistry preparation in MYP was horrible), so I'm guessing that's what's bringing me down and throwing me completely off the questions. Can anyone advise me as to how I could quickly and efficiently catch up and build a good base in chemistry (and math if necessary) that will help me at least get …
