This thread could be used for the new syllabus IA from 2016 onwards. Please note that I cannot help individual students with their IA. The choice of topic should be your own work so please do not ask for suggestions for your IA. The following information is taken from the May 2015 subject report (I'm sure it is copyrighted to the IB, but I see no harm in sharing it with IB students). Research question: Encourage students to choose a research question that has a degree of challenge, is of interest to them and one where they do not know at the outset what the outcome will be.A good research question will probably try to determine a trend or relationship. Students shou…

My teacher told me that an IB study guide would be very helpful going through Chemistry and I started looking online for a book. But, when I look on Half.com, there are two books for IB Chemistry, a course companion made in 2010, and a study guide made in 2007. I was wondering which is the better one to get in order to study for the IB exam and assist with explaining concepts. I am not sure what the differences are between the course companion and the study guide, so I need to know which one is better to buy. If it helps, I'm taking SL Chemistry and the teacher is very good but there are a few topics where I need to refresh on from Chemistry I (Sophomore Year).

Hi. My daughter used to be in an IB school up to gr 9. She chose commerce stream at gr 9, which means she didn't learn Chemistry from gr 9. She moved to a local school (non IB school) in gr 10, and learn Chemistry here, which covers: - atomic structure - atomic theory - quantum mechanics - electron configuration - periodic table - chemical equation (balancing the equation) - compound naming convention - Chemistry Basic Law (Lavoisier, Proust, Dalton, GAy Lussac, and Avogadro Law) - Relative atomic mass She is intending to pursue pharmaceutical science. I have checked that some of the universities that we intend to go…

I am doing my chemistry ia about investigate how the different amounts of salt added to a solution alter the mpemba effect concept and this is my research question "How does changing the salinity of water (0%,5%,10%,15%,20%) by adding different masses of NaCl, affect the Mpemba effect, measured by the rate of temperature change of hot and cold water, respectively?" Can you suggest relevant random errors and systematic errors because I can't think of any ?

5 dm3 of carbon monoxide, CO(g), and 2 dm3 of oxygen, O2(g), at the same temperature and pressure are mixed together. Assuming complete reaction according to the equation given, what is the maximum volume of carbon dioxide, CO2(g), in dm3, that can be formed? 2CO(g) + O2(g) → 2CO2(g) The answer is 4, but I don't know how to get there, can someone please explain this. Am I supposed to change the dm3 to moles?

"An unknown compound, X, of molecular formula C4H8O2, has the following IR, H NMR and MS spectra. Deduce the structure of X using the information given and any other additional information from sections 26–28 of the data booklet. For each spectrum, assign as much spectroscopic information as possible, based on the structure of X." About this question. I'm easily able to find things like the IHD and the wavelengths given in the spectrum that's presented. I found out there is a carbonyl group and a C - H bond. I was wondering if someone knew how to deduce relative integration numbers either from this question or from a H NMR spectrum. I can see that there are …

"Compound Y is a hydrocarbon and has a molar mass of 86.20 g mol–1. Upon combustion, Y produces 1.75 g CO and 0.836 g H2O. Deduce the molecular formula for Y." This is a question I tried solving yesterday, related to Stoichiometry. It's simple enough and I understand the general way to solve this. After calculating both n(C) and n(H), I tried calculating n(C)/n(H). My problem is that this resulted in something like this: 0.0398/0.0928 = 199/464 (=0.4288...) The solutions that are available to me say it's more like 3/7. Now, my question is probably more related to math and calculators than chemistry itself. I can't seem to get this approximation of 3/7 wi…

Hello, I was having a few questions about my chemistry database IA. I am investigating the effect of halogenation on boiling point in alkanes. My research questions are as follows: As the carbon chain length increases the boiling point increases. How does halogenation affect the boiling point and the factors that contribute to boiling point. Which of the factors mentioned above are most affected by changing the halogen attached to the alkane I drew up graphs of surface area vs boiling point, molar mass vs boiling point and polarizability vs boiling point for alkanes, fluoroalkanes, chloroalkanes and bromoalkanes all the way …

I am currently in the experimental stage of my chemistry IA (sl) and it is a redox titration where the indicator is KMnO4 (0.01 M), the acid H2SO4 (1 M), and my independent variable is different boiling times of spinach. I am trying to test how much iron is in the spinach water after different periods of boiling, but am having trouble determining when the endpoint is. Every time the solution turns pink, it goes back to clear around one to two minutes later. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can determine the endpoint? Or maybe I should change my indicator to a more potent solution? Any help will be very much appreciated!

Hello everyone, I am currently writting up my IA for chemistry but I have to a realisation that my data is really not helpful and I don't know what conclusion I can draw from it. My teacher made me redo my experiment twice because to him it wasn't possible (even tough I was following a method that I had seen online and on previous IAs). Anyway, He made me make 0.00004 M solutions of magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, and strontium carbonate, these are supposed to act as bases as they are found in antacids for stomach burns. (The concentration is very low because of the solubility of the compounds I used). I then put in a pH probe in 25ml of one of the solutions …

Like both but can only choose 1. I’m not really sure how to decide. Ive already chosen chem but feel like physics is more suitable as I’m taking hl maths and also I do not like organic chem. from what I’ve heard both are equally challenging subjects. What made you decide to choose one over the other? Btw I’m not pursuing a science degree in the future thanks

I have a very neglectful teacher for chemistry and an even more neglectful IB coordinator. So what would happen is I would come up with a RQ he will the ones he doesn't like and after a few tries I find a RQ he likes then the next day I buy the materials for the lab 5 to 6 hours later he reveals that he doesn't like it anymore and I need need to find a new RQ and to do it over again. I am pretty sure this is natural if it happened once. However, he would keep doing this to me for a good 3 weeks maybe I am not just dedicated but I gave up after that. I wasted too much money on materials and too much time was wasted I can't keep up with my other classes. So I decided…

I was thinking about doing my Chem SL IA on the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by catalase found in a potato. I was going to change the particle size of the potato and determine its effect on the rate of decomposition I am a bit concerned if the method I am using is okay. I asked my teacher if I could use a gas syringe to measure the gas produced, but they said the gas syringes they have are not great and have a lot of uncertainty. An alternative was to add soap to the hydrogen peroxide and measure the time it takes for the bubbles to reach a certain height. Or could I somehow use a eudiometer to measure gas produced? Is this an appropriate method?…

Okay so I am in HL Chem and I am worried my IA idea might be too simple or obvious. Basically I want to test if the temperature of water affects the rate of the Acid Base reaction between Sodium Bicarbonate and Citric Acid in bath bombs. I would make the bombs myself to standardize the amount of everything that goes in and test a bunch of different times in water at different temperatures. Then I time the reaction to see how long it takes in each different temperature of water. My one concern is that it seems a bit too obvious that the temperature will affect the rate and I worry that it's just to simplistic for an HL student. Some ideas I had to make it more complicated …

I'm an IB student who's working on the chemistry and biology IAs right now, and I'm still struggling with choosing a good topic. I have an idea for chemistry, but it comes from one of the required practicals I did in school, and I'm not sure if that is discouraged by the IB. Is it fine to take a practical done in school and adapt it for the IAs? Please let me know what you think, any advice will surely help!

I would like to do an IA on the effect of antacids on neutralizing stomach acid, using diluted HCl, but I've been told it's siding more towards Chemistry. Are there any ways that I could make this more of a biology related IA, and how can I do so? Someone told me to involve an enzyme, like pepsin, but I'm not sure of what to do with it. Thanks!

Hi So I'm just doing my chemistry IA and I'm trying to calculate my uncertainties and I was wondering if I need to use the unmeasured uncertainties from my experiment for a the final uncertainties. For example, adding the uncertainty of measuring a chemical from a measuring cylinder while the final answer is something weighed in grams. Would I need to include that and if so, how?

Hi everyone, I'm currently searching for chemistry ia ideas. My initial idea had to do with caffeine extraction from tea by titration, however I'm really confused about the method. Hello everyone! My chemistry IA involves increasing temperature of a reaction in a closed system. I need to find out the concentration of the reactants while doing so, but in a real life experiment, it is impossible to constantly check for the concentration of the reactants while heating without affecting the reaction. So, I decided to go with a simulation, but can't find any website where I can perform my own experiment. Could you please suggest some?

I am doing a chem ia on how the brewing temperature will affect the caffeine content within tea. I have done my experiment and all but I am having a hard time calculating my errors. So basically I used solvent extraction method to extract caffeine from tea with chloroform and then evaporated it. At last I was left with crude caffeine so i used its mass and the molar mass of standard caffeine to find the amount in mols. To find the errors do I just need to use the uncertainty of molar mass(0.001g) and the mass of crude caffeine (0.002g)? To prepare the tea solutions I have used water and tea bags. I have just received a second extension on my chemistry IA. I have all my calculations down and uncertainties, the issue with my IA is that my experiment was terrible and I dug myself into a terrible hole which it looks like I can't get out of. My experiment was an acid base titration with 5 different types of vinegar (white, white wine, champagne, apple cider, rice wine), and my processed data is their pH values (the range is between pH 2.35 - pH 2.47 - not much variety and it concerns me). The vinegar did not have labels which specified the acid content in them, and I cannot simply calculate the acetic acid content of each vinegar because apple cider vinegar for example…
