How many marks are uncertainties worth in the chemistry ia? If I were to not include them at all how many marks would I lose? If I did them incorrectly how many marks would I lose?

Hello! I wanted to compare natural pH indicators (ex, red cabbage and beets) with the standard ones. I was thinking of just doing pH titrations to compare the results of the natural vs standard. Along with that, I was going to produce the pH curves and calculate the pKa value as well as the equivalence points. Is this good enough for an IA? Should I add anything?

I'm a little confused how to convert g/L to mol/L, I can't seem to condense the formula in one step :/ If anyone knows a formula that doesn't require multiple steps, please leave it below! Also my IA is due in two days so it would be appreciated if I got a reply soon,,,

so im currently doing an enthalpy change lab and im not getting anywhere near the theoretical value. the reaction is a single replacement exothermic reaction (Zn+CuSO4-->ZnSO4+Cu) The solution should be 1.0M at 25mL and the Zn added is 6g. The theoretical value of the enthalpy change is -217 kJ/mol but I currently have -19.68 kJ/mol. i'm so confused about how this is working???

My proposal is to heat tea at five different temperatures and to measure the concentration of caffeine to see what the effect of temperature is on caffeine concentration. My teacher approved the project, but encourage me to change it not to involve tea because that apparently makes it a "second grade science fair project". Other than that, she didn't give me a whole lot of advice. Based on her advice, I'm assuming if I keep the project the way it is, I probably won't be able to score very high. I have seen several other posts on this forum with people who have the same, or very similar IA proposals, and some have wondered if it's too complicated. Should I keep my proposa…

Hello guys, Simple question, but maybe not as simple answer - Can my Chemistry IA be 13 pages long of the 13th page includes only the citations? I understand that the maximum page number is 12, and I tried to reduce the IA as much as I could, but I am stuck at 13. Thanks a lot 🙂

Hey, My topic for my Chemistry SL IA is the quantitative analysis of vitamin c in raw tomatoes compared to cooked tomatoes. I thought about making 5 repetitions because of the certainty. I will get 5 results overall. Is that enough? Or do I need more repetitions? Is this topic even useful? If not, what do you request? I'm open for ideas! PS: I have no time left, deadline by tomorrow. Thank you

Hii! So for my IA i was thinking of doing the effect of temperature on the rate of reaction between vinegar and baking soda (this question is subject to change, if u have any better ideas or ways I can improve this topic let me know). I was just a little confused about what exactly my procedure would be for this topic so if anybody has any ideas or can help me pls let me know ASAP!! i have to tell my teacher in a couple dayss.

So for my IA i decided to look at viscosity and the effect that temperature has on the viscosity of honey. The experiment doesn't require any chemicals and i'm really worried bc i want it to be a good report. For the procedure, i was just gonna heat up different samples of honey and drop a marble in them to see how much time it takes to reach the bottom. Is my topic too simple? My teacher said that it could be the simplest experiment ever but if u do the report and stuff right then u can score really high. How can i make it more complex? I'm in SL chem btw. Research Question: How does temperature affect the viscosity of honey?

So I find a IA topic that is very relevant to myself and holds my interest, but my chemistry teacher gets annoyed at me telling me that my experiment is very “duH”, I wanted to neutralize antacid tablets and find how much acid each brand of tablet actually neutralizes to see if it is effective or not. This idea to me is not “DuH” at all , but she said that the more Calcium Carbonate or whatever material is in the tablet you have the more it will neutralize. The sad part is that it is an internal assessment and therefore she herself will be marking it so I can’t go against her and still do the topic :( I don’t want to change my topic but I was wondering what i could do to …

Hello I've gone through one semester of Chemistry HL, and I find it to be the class I struggle the most with. I am fine with the scores I've gotten so far (5s), however I know that the material is going to get even more difficult as all the topics are cumulative, and I've started to worry immensely since I struggle to understand the material thoroughly. My teacher is not very helpful even though he tries to be, since his teaching method isn't very organised and he rushes through multiple entire sections in 2 periods, which I'm just too slow to keep up with. I find it a difficult subject to understand and memorise since it's all on such a small spectrum, if that makes…

Hey guys, I'm having second thoughts about my research question for my chem IA. I'm doing different catalysts (5) for decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Does the underlined, red text sound too lengthy and awkward? I was wondering if I should group this into a range like " classes of compounds" but I'm not sure and just confused what to classify these names into. Oh, and for reference, my compounds are maganese oxide, iron oxide, lead oxide, potassium iodide and catalase. Any suggestions to help would be appreciated. Any constructive criticism would be awesome RQ: How does the presence of a transition metal, post-transitional-metal, alkali or …

Hello everyone, Right now I'm really starting to seek out topics for my IA. However the ones that I have found interesting so far ended up being beyond my knowledge to accomplish. For example my first idea was : - To establish at which points and in which environment graphene paints would absorb more CO2 then released while they cured and my other topic was : - To investigate pH trends of heavy metal bioleaching with different concentrations of sulphur Could someone give me a push into the right direction in how I could procure the necessary data or what type of procedure I should use? Thank you in advance!

I think I have an idea of what I want to do but I reckon it is too simple, can I please have some advice- I am thinking of changing the concentration of a ligand (not too sure which one) and measure the absorption, or maybe do this with one or two other ligands. Then I will sketch a graph and use the Beer-Lambert law to determine the value of eb. Please let me know if it is bad or not, I am kind of struggling.

Hi, I'm in my first year of IB and I am starting to research potential topics for my chemistry extended essay. Because I want my extended essay to include one of my passions, I decided to write it about something related to medicine, pharmacy or even climate change. So far, all my ideas have been rejected by the supervisor due to them being inappropriate or too difficult. But I think I finally came up with something usable, I still need to work narrowing it down but do you think to research about the effectiveness of expired meds such as Ibuprofen or aspirin and relating it to the maybe useless expiration date of some meds? (they are only there because of law). …

hey guys, I am planning on doing my chem IA on different catalysts impact on the rate of reaction of decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. I was planning on measuring this rate of reaction with gas pressure ( with gas pressure sensors). My different catalysts are manganese dioxide, Potassium iodide, catalase, iron dioxide and lead oxide. So 3 transitional metal catalysts, one ionic compound and one organic compound as my catalyst. But now I am beginning to have second thoughts on this topic because ultimately I am not using a quantitative value as my IV. I've just chosen 5 different catalysts. But I'm not sure how I would hypothesize which catalyst is better th…

As far as I know you need: Introduction, hypothesis, variables, materials, method, raw data, processed data (averages?), qualitative data, graphs, interpretation, conclusion, evaluation. But surely you need some kind of relatively advanced mathematical process to have a good interpretation? For an experimental Chem IA. Do you need to calculate Pearson's correlation or a t-test? What is a t-test? Are standard deviations enough?

I was considering doing my IA about tea (because I'm obsessed with it heh). One idea that I have is measuring the effect of water temperature on the caffeine content of black tea. Considering I'd have to measure the caffeine content at different temperature intervals, and also take multiple trials, is this far too complex? And is extracting caffeine itself a complex procedure for an SL Chem IA? merci merci merci for any help Also, any other suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Hi, I really want to study medicine at university. It's been my dream since forever, and I'm not interested in anything else. But, I'm terrible at Chemistry. I'm just managing with SL, and HL would be horrible for me. I wouldn't be able to do it, and I'm not very interested in it either. I also have Bio, Eng and Psychology at HL, and Math and Lang B at SL. I have two options now: 1. Continue in Chem SL and do a foundation year in med schools in the UK, guaranteeing a better overall IB score. 2. Struggle in Chem HL and probably lower my grades in other subjects, and affect my health negatively. (I also have to struggle to get into HL first of all…

Is there any set rule or structure towards choosing the independent variables for a chemistry IA? For my IA I want to vary temperature, however there's a possibility that I won't be able to vary it uniformly (ex: Trial 1: 30.1, Trial 2: 35.6). As such, is it okay to write down the independent variables as what was actually measured and just mention that in my analysis? Also is it okay if there's a significant leap between trial variables? (ex: It's easy for me to do a trial at 0 degrees, then trials at 30 degrees and up).

Hello, I am writing my HL Chem IA on rate of reaction of H2O2 decomposition with different metal oxides. I'm almost done with my IA, but realized I do not have error propagation. My research question is How do different metal oxides(MnO2, Fe2O3, CuO, and Al2O3) affect the rate of reaction of 9% hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) decomposition? So I recorded the instantaneous rate of reaction at 30 seconds and averaged them. When I asked my teacher, he said error and uncertainty propagations are not necessary, but I'm not sure. Hey there, I have my mocks coming up next week and my real IBs in like 4 months. My Chemistry teacher (who was pretty awful) has just left and my new teacher speaks no English. I have the 2014 edition chemistry course companion for IB but I don't really like the explanations (very long and difficult to follow). All the other books in my school library are for the older syllabuses. I was wondering if anybody new any really good chemistry study guides/ text books for SL that are for the current syllabus? My IA is fairly simple. It is a rate of reaction practical, those ones where you can, for example, test the effect of changing temperature or pH on the rate of a reaction. My question is: can it score well? It isn't so basic that it's listed in the textbook's list of practicals but it is basic. The reaction that I am investigating is actually a very interesting one even if it is kind of basic. How would a relatively rate of reaction practical score a 7? Would I have to calculate the rate order for example?

I just don't have much idea about how to decide my chem IA topic. There are less than 30 days till the end of my summer vacation, and I have no idea about what to do with my Chem IA. I asked my classmates about their topics, and they don't have any idea either. I still get my chem EE to write for this summer and my summer school starts at August.8th. After experiencing selecting topics for chem EE over and over again (because the chosen topics either did not fit the category of pure chemistry or were unfeasible), I find it hard to decide a suitable topic for my IA.
