Hello, I was wondering in my equipment list should I put: Volume (ml) or (l), later in the calculation I have put (l) but I am confused because all the beakers or measurements I used are all measured in ml? Also one additional question, does anyone know what is a square metal stand called on which we can keep things and then change the height using that stand????? Thanks a lot

I did a practical on radial hydraulic jumps and I need to explain the theory behind it. I know how to calculate the pressure using pressure=phg formula but I don't know how to relate the water pressure and the velocity of water. I searched for some equations but they are way to complicated and I don't understand which one to use since they seem irrelevant to my situation. Could you please tell me an equation that simply relates the water pressure and its velocity? Also mention what each variable in the equation refers to. Thanks

Hello everyone! I know that our IAs are supposed to be corrected by our teachers and that not all of them get sent off to moderation. I have also heard, that even if you apply for the IBO to regrade your exams, they won't look at you IA again. Now, this presents me with a problem in Physics, as, my teacher is... well. Not qualified to teach IB for several reasons. She doesn't understand some of syllabus, she barely speaks English, and she also happens to hate me for "being always late" which I actually am most of the time, because I noticed an inversely proportional correlation between my time spent in her classroom, and the grades I got on topic specific tests.…

Hello, I'm a physics student and I'm writing my EE in physics. My research question is "how does wavelength of light affect the energy output of a photovoltaic cell?" I will be comparing different types of lights such as incandescent light, fluorescent light, sunlight, and LED light. I bought a small 1W solar panel and now I need to find some ways to control the experiment. My biggest concern is controlling the intensity of all light sources. I believe since my independent variables are wavelengths of different types of light, I should keep the intensity same right? For example, I can't have one tiny LED light and 1 240V incandescent light because they produce …

I am starting to get a bit worried about the pacing in my HL Physics class. We are halfway through year 1 and have completed only the measurement and uncertainty unit and half of the mechanics unit. To me it seems like we are moving extremely slowly and that there is no way that all the material will be covered before exam time. Is this normal or is my class behind? Thanks for the help.

Hey guys, I was looking into doing cricket as an IA for physics, as it does meet personal engagement, but was wondering whether that would be a good option. I has a couple of ideas that I thought would be interesting to investigate: - Height bowler (bowl release) and bounce - Spin or swing bowling - Weight of bats and force, or bat swing - the "sweet spot" of a cricket bat These are only very rough options. If you think one would be interesting or good to investigate, or have any other ideas, (cricket or non-cricket related) then I would be extremely open to hearing them. Thanks!!!

i've just submitted my Physics IA, and I've realised that it's a little bit longer than an EE (still under the 12 page limit somehow). I might've went somewhat overboard on the explanation of my results... So, just wondering, does anyone know if this will affect my marks significantly? I'm somewhat worried about the teachers/examiners getting annoyed about the length.

Hi guys! For my IA, I'm investigating on the relationship between time fall a parachute to fall and its surface area, but I can't get a linear relationship. The parachute didn't reach the terminal velocity, so the velocity is changing when the A is changing and it's also accelerating downwards. What can I do? Help please!!!!!

hi so my physics IA is about projectile motion ( investigating the effect of angle of projectile on the range of water projectiles) i will be first calculating the velocity of the water hose through the formula Q=AV and then i will launch a projectile with varying angles (15,30,45,60,75) with the same velocity that i have calculated and talk about how they influence shapes of water fountains etc.... with the influence of air resistance and graphing it and talking about why the angle 45 is the optimum angle for furthest range i asked my teacher and he said it was fine however i feel as it is too simple... if it is, what should i change to make …

Hi guys, I'm thinking about investigating the effect of surface on angular momentum of a spinning coin. I'll be spinning the coin on various surfaces (wooden table, plastic, cloth etc) and measuring its velocity by using slo-mo camera. Would this be a good IA? All suggestions are welcome, thanks. P.S. I'm in Physics SL

I've completed an IA in physics that is part simulation and part hands-on exploration. In the simulation part, I establish an exponential relationship using a simulation (that I made) which simulates individual particles and some calculus. I was wondering if this is perhaps too mathematics focused and risks straying outside the bounds of the task. I end up concluding that there is an exponential relationship, which is then confirmed using theory (from Option C), then I fit my experimental data to the model to obtain some parameters.

Hi, I am doing a physics lab on the deformation of balloons as they stretch, however I am worried I will be focusing too much on engineering formulas and usage in my project. I suppose engineering is really a sub-chute of physics, but I'm worried that if I use too many engineering-specific formulas it will be frowned upon. Am I correct in this assumption? Thanks

I would like to calculate the I1 which appears in this circuit (http://subefotos.com/ver/?4ffce5de346fc28082ddd6215177b259o.png). The result is I1 = -5/6 A; however I need to know the exact procedure to reach that solution. Thanks in advance.

I have tried everything to understand the Data Analysis/Uncertainties and Errors (Chapter 1) topic of Physics. All I understood in the past papers were the proportionality questions but I don't know how to find uncertainties/fractional uncertainties/absolute uncertainties/percentage uncertainties AT ALL. I just don't understand what formulas to use for the uncertainty questions! They pop a lot so please help. P.S: I read the textbook, but it doesn't really help me solve the past paper questions.

I am sure what I should do for my Physics IA. My question right now is "What is the relationship between the radius of the ball, the angle, and the distance traveled?". I feel that this question is to simple. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or other ways I can look at it. I am open to any ideas and I am still at the beginning so I can change it.

Hey, So, I have just finished writing up the first draft of my IA. Altogether, I have 2442 words, excluding footnotes, my appendix, cover page and bibliography. Is that too much? My textbook only said that it should be an investigation of 8-12 pages, which it is. I currently have an unnumbered cover page, 11 pages of text, a few graphs, tables and equations, an appendix of one and a half page (pages 12-13), that includes tables with raw data, and a 14th numbered page, that contains the bibliography. Is this too long for an IA? Should I try to cut the words down? Thanks for your help

Hey everyone! This is my first post on this forum. Anyway, I am currently searching for a topic in the area of sound. I already thought of a number of topics, but my supervisor and me came up with the following topic: An investigation about how air pressure affects the speed of sound. However, we found out that one could encounter difficulties in a practical experiment measuring the change of speed of sound when air pressure is changed (one would need at least a 5m long container whose air pressure could be changed). Also I'm concerned that the topic might be too narrow or have already been covered too much. What do you think of this? Can you th…

Hi everyone! We are doing our 10 hour labs at school next week. Despite the fact that we have never gotten an example essay or gotten any help with developing our topics and research question and we only have one class left until then... Our teacher barely speaks English - and I'm not quite competent in his language - and he seems to have problems understanding both the syllabus and us, students. So, we're pretty much on our own here. The topic I came up with is thermodynamics, more specifically measuring the specific heat capacity of some water based fluid. I know it's not very original, but it is something that, hopefully, even I won't screw up. What I'm plann…

Currently it feels like I am at an impasse. I felt like I needed advice and some help, so sorry if I don't do something right considering this is my first post. Currently my classes are HL Physics and History, SL Spanish, Chem and Math. What I'm having trouble with is my HL Physics class. The teacher does not teach. He is simply more of a facilitator and has even said himself he is a facilitator. It is halfway through Semester 1 of my Junior year and we are only on Dynamics and Projectile Motion. Previous HL students have said they had to self teach the entirety of the HL topics. My class is also a mix of SL and HL students since there wasn't enough HL student…

Hi guys, So I am in Year 2 and going to start my IA in Physics. I wanted to request all of you whom have completed the DP or are pursuing it, to advice me on the general format and tips for the physics IA report. So far, most of my lab reports have not been good and I am advised to include more physics terminology, follow coherent order, analyse in depth and evaluate properly. Please advice me on how I can improve upon. Thanks in advance

Hello~! Still not quite sure how all this works since the site changed, but I'll give it a shot... I am stuck in the progress for my Physics IA, and I can't find help anywhere. How do I write up a proposal for my Physics IA??? What has to be included? Is there a word count? Is there a rubric?? If it helps, I'm planning on doing an Experimental IA, on connecting impact velocity and the amplitude of the resulting acoustics..... Edit: Nevermind. Thanks guys.

Hi, I came across this pendulum when I for vacation in Germany called THE FLYING PENDULUM and decided researching on it. However, the only thing I find is the history of the pendulum! This is how the pendulum works : Can SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME PHYSICS WISE WHAT IS THE WORKING HERE??? For example, with the Simple Pendulum : PE is max at amplitudes but here when do we have KE or PE as Max or zero>>????? Thanks.

Hey guys!! So as it is July, my November exams are only a few months away. Currently, my worst subject is physics HL. I find it really difficult to grasp (and memorise) all the different concepts and I'm slightly stressed out at the moment as the only topics I'm kinda confident in are topics 2, 3 and 4. So my current plan is to go through the Oxford textbook and take summary notes of each topic. Then after taking the summary notes I plan on doing questions for that topic. I'm not sure how effective this method would be, and it would also be very time consuming. Also I heard that the May 2016 Physics paper was a horrific :') *crying* I'm just wondering if a…

Just a bit( well not really) of background info: The topic i intend to do for my Physics EE revolves around fluids(covered in the HL Mechanics). Im not sure which research question is easier to do and more suitable for the extended essay, ' How does the radius of a ball bearing falling through a viscous liquid (e.g. motor oil) effect it's terminal velocity?' or , 'How the temperature of the viscous liquid effects the terminal velocity of a ball bearing?': Either way, along with the variable prescribed in either research question, i intend to also test the effect the radius of the tube the ball bearing will be dropped in will have on its terminal velocity. My ma…
