IB is hard, we all know it, and there's always the temptation to take subjects where it's easier to get a 7. I just base my switching of History HL to SL on that. However, there are some subjects in the IB (and also A-Levels that aren't relevant to us) that are considered "soft" and as a result, universities like Cambridge and LSE have openly spelled out their attitudes towards them (not positive). Other selective universities do not accept them either. This is the list of "soft" subjects that aren't recognized the same way as other IB subjects, according to http://timesonline.typepad.com/schoolgate/...a-level-s.html: • Business and Management • Design and Technology • I…

Since we have an Oxbridge thread, and I find some UCAS application processes quite confusing and questions-raising, I thought we might as well have a UCAS thread... All questions regarding UCAS should be addressed in this thread. And I want to start first. Does anybody else think that the 4000 characters limit is too little??? I have only written one paragraph explaining why I want to study in UK, haven't finished and have reached 616 characters. I don't think I could explain eeeeeverything that I'd like to include in my PS then. The mindmap indicates that the length is approximately 600 words, and I think it's very little! What font and size is used in UCAS apply fo…

Okay after seeing a tonne of questions about getting into Medicine in the UK recently, I thought I'd just save everybody some time and make a questions thread with a little list of frequently asked Qs. Please read through these to see if your question is answered here! ...and if it's not been answered already, please feel free to ask it on this thread so we can keep all the information together for future students so they can more quickly access the info they need. Frequently Asked Questions! Regarding subjects and IB scores... 1.1 Do I need HL Chemistry? 1.2 What if HL Chemistry is not offered at my school? 1.3 Do I need HL Biology? 1.4 Do I need HL Maths? 1.5 How many…

The summer goes by fast and most of us (applying in the UK for 2012 entry) are already into UCAS trying to finish our application as quickly as possible. EDIT: deleted every information initially written and this post is now about: Where are you applying this year? Have the increased fees affected your choices?

Hey guys! I thought I'd start this since peeps will have started finalising their apps and unis for the UK. I thought maybe everyone can write about their choice of subject and which unis they're applying to and maybe their predicted score (only if you want to)? I figure we can all like support each other through the LOOOOOOONG wait that is coming up for us. I'll start: Will send/Sent Application on: 30th September 2013 Course: Law (M100) Unis (in order of preference): University of Oxford (Merton College) London School of Economics Durham University (St. Chad's college) King's College London University of Warwick Current status (20th January): Oxford - Conditional Offer …

Good people of IBS. Since the application deadline for Oxbridge and all the fancy Med courses is on Monday, and people sometimes send their applications off earlier (or already know where they're going to apply in January), I decided to make this thread. This way, we can all moan about how much stress it is to wait for offers and meet people applying to the same unis. Therefore, post your predictions and choices here, so we can keep it all nice and organised. soooooo.... My predictions are in my signature, so I'm not going to repeat myself. Choices: Oxford (Merton) - Law (BA in Jurisprudence) LSE - Law QMUL - English and European Law Newcastle - Law Exeter - Law with …

Hey, I'm interested in doing either PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) at Oxford or IR (International Relations) at London School of Economics. Is anyone else here interested in them? Does anyone know how many points I should approximately have to be accepted? The LSE website says min. 37 and 6-6-6 from HL, but according to our coordinator this is only for them to consider you, so in reality you need more points. Does anyone know how much more?

Hey, I posted on this forum a while ago asking about the UK uni admission system, and I think I finally got the hang of it a little So thank you so much for that, those who have kindly replied to me on that topic. But then some other questions also popped up in my mind: 1. When exactly does the application for Oxbridge start? 2. Could anyone tell me what kind of stuff are required for me when applying for them (how many essays, how many requirements, etc), or give me a site with all the requirements on there? 3. I heard that some of you did your interview with Cambridge sometime in December, but then a girl in my school did her interview with Oxford around mid-October la…

Hey! I do 4 HLs and 2 SLs for my diploma and am doing 2 extra HL subjects after school as certificates. Keeping in mind that they don't count in my diploma score, and the fact that my 2 extras are Theatre and Dance HL, do you think it would make a lick of a difference to a top UK university (for a law application) that I'm doing them? Thanks everyone!

Hi everyone, I am going to start my IB yr 1 this year, in India. I have chosen Chemistry at HL, Biology at HL, Physics at HL, Maths at SL, English SL and French Ab Initio. My aim is to study medicine, in UK. I got a call from my school asking me to send them a list of subject topics I need to study for medical school, in each subject. I contacted a few universities but they did not offer any other reply except take Chem and Bio at HL , etc. I am really confused now. I have no idea what topics do I need to study in the three sciences and math (well these are the important ones!). Can someone please help? Thanks and regards, Varsha

Imperial College London ii. University College London iii. University of Edinburgh iv. University of Warwick v. University of Glasgow Any feedback on any of these universities is more than welcome!!! =) Good luck to everyone with their applications!

Hi there! I'm in the process of writing my personal statement for law (applying to Oxford) and I've sort of come to a stand still. I've realised that what I'm talking about is not really relevant to law because I have never had any work experience in law/ done anything particularly to do with it. Also, so I know who I'm up against, can you tell me where you are applying and what subjects you are taking/ predicted grades/ any work experience/ awards etc. Hopefully, this will benefit all of us! Good luck to you all! I'm studying: math SL physics HL chemistry HL english HL history sl Rather …

I'm interested in applying to Cambridge for either Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Natural Sciences, but I have a dilemma. At Cambridge for UK full IB students, they need a 776 for certain science and math courses at HL, but unlike most UK schools, my public high school in the US only has a small amount of IB courses. I'm in Physics, Math, and Chemistry, but my school doesn't offer Math HL or Physics HL, so the only course I have that meets the requirements is Chemistry HL. Thus my question is: due to me being an international student, will I still be reviewed for my course selection under the UK standards for full IB students and do I have any grounds since my scho…

I got a 38 with a 6 in French, but unfortunately I got a 5 in Music. I can't call Bristol till Monday, but I was wondering if anyone knows about Bristol accepting students who have missed their offer? I am applying as an international student, just in case that makes any difference? (I don't know) Thanks!

I need some help with finding the most prestigious universities that the UK has to offer when it comes to business studies. If you have some opinions or expertise, or perhaps even some experience - I would appreciate your reply I just graduated from the IB with 38 points but with a 5 in HL business & management - A shame, since that is what I intend to study further, and many universities have HL specific requirements I'm currently considering doing a retake just to fix that chink in my armor... Hello, so I received my IB diploma in 2012. At that point I held conditional offers from Uni of Leeds and SOAS. However, I only received 35 points, which was about 3 points below my conditional offers. Thus, they withdrew their offers. I have re-taken 3 subjects in november increasing my score to 37 points with 18 points in my HLs (not that much of an improvement..i know) and a lowest score of 4 in math SL. Unfortunately, most Universities I'm prepared to pay 9000 pounds a year for require 38 points with 6/6/6 in all HLs eg. Kings college or SOAS. I'm planning to study something along the lines of politics or international relations preferably in combination with chinese,…

Hi everyone, So far I've applied to universities in the UK and three in Florida, because of Bright Futures which would pay my full tuition. I have conditional offers (that I'm fairly sure I can achieve) from the university of Manchester and York and I'm waiting to hear about Oxford and Bristol. The course I applied for is Physics and Philosophy (MPhysPhil in 4 years). However, recently my father has discussed his finances with the person in Romani…

Hello all, So I've had all summer to write my EE on ITGS and kinda messed up by not doing it. The first draft is due in on the the 20th and I'll probably rush myself into finishing. However, I am thinking of dropping to the Certificate program because I am struggling with Biology HL and I'm not in any way thinking of pursuing a career involved with Biology. The only reason I chose it was because my school was only offering a limited number of subjects and it was the only one I could pick. So my real question is, have you got any information about universities that accept Certificates while applying? Or if you guys have any suggestions which could help me I would seriously…

Hey everyone, Long story short, I am currently taking 4 higher level subjects; Physics, Math, Chemistry and English B. I am interested in applying to oxbridge, however, I have been told by my teachers that 4 higher level subjects are a waste of time. They said that the university will look at only 3 of them and not care about the fourth one. So is this true? would Oxford-Cambridge appreciate the fact that I have taken 4 higher level subjects or am I wasting my time? Thanks in advance

Hi guys! I want to study computer science at Cambridge and I've been looking through the course requirements and they said that further mathematics is considered highly desirable, which means that I qualify for applying but will be at a disadvantage. The reason I didn't take further mathematics is because our school doesn't offer it. So what do you think? Are my chances slim with just HL math? Is there anything I could do to boost my chances with just HL math? I'm doing my EE in math about a subject related to computer science, but I doubt they care much about that. By the way, does Cambridge care about the 3 extra points from TOK + EE? Because the way I understand it is …

The following only applies to IB students applying to the UK (which is why it doesn't make sense to others). UK My school's college counselor emailed me this website today, http://www.ucas.com/resultsandnextsteps/adjustment/facts . I thought I'd share it here since I've never heard of the scheme, and no one else I've spoken to has either. So it's not that well-known. The process is not the same as Clearing, since that's for students that don't achieve their offers. Basically it's about applying to other UK universities if you exceed your Conditional Firm offer when you get your IB results. Each year some applicants pass their exams with better results than expected. You c…

So the choices I applied to for law were Warwick (38), Reading (37), Southampton (36), Exeter (36), York (36). I got my offers through of a surprising 35 from Reading, 36 with 18 at HL for Southampton, 36 from Exeter, and an interview at York, which hasn't been done yet. Haven't heard from Warwick at all. So, basically, I'm predicted 38/38. I don't believe I'll get close; our school has a trend of predicting ~5 points above the actual score. Personally, I'd be tempted to let it be, however I've heard that universities often look at predicted 45s with an extra grain of salt. So, should I ask my IBC to drop the predicted score a bit? If I did so, I'd probably ask him to drop my Chem score one (as it's irrelevant to the degree) and maybe my French score one as well; they're both the subjects I see myself as most likely to lose marks at. Then again, I do have a proven academic track record, with a 7 in anticipated History SL and awards in independent external examinations. Tho…

I graduated from IB in May 2010 with a diploma of 39 points. Now I want to apply to universities in the UK to study Arabic and International Relations. I really want to get into St Andrews but I'm doubtful as to whether they will accept me. The minimum requirement for Arabic-IR is 38 points (only because IR is so popular; other joint honours with Arabic require around 36) so I'm just above the limit.
