IB is hard, we all know it, and there's always the temptation to take subjects where it's easier to get a 7. I just base my switching of History HL to SL on that. However, there are some subjects in the IB (and also A-Levels that aren't relevant to us) that are considered "soft" and as a result, universities like Cambridge and LSE have openly spelled out their attitudes towards them (not positive). Other selective universities do not accept them either. This is the list of "soft" subjects that aren't recognized the same way as other IB subjects, according to http://timesonline.typepad.com/schoolgate/...a-level-s.html: • Business and Management • Design and Technology • I…

Since we have an Oxbridge thread, and I find some UCAS application processes quite confusing and questions-raising, I thought we might as well have a UCAS thread... All questions regarding UCAS should be addressed in this thread. And I want to start first. Does anybody else think that the 4000 characters limit is too little??? I have only written one paragraph explaining why I want to study in UK, haven't finished and have reached 616 characters. I don't think I could explain eeeeeverything that I'd like to include in my PS then. The mindmap indicates that the length is approximately 600 words, and I think it's very little! What font and size is used in UCAS apply fo…

I want to study theoretical physics in the UK, and I am having trouble figuring out a best fit university for my predicted score. My predicted score hasn't been published yet...but my grades seems to pointing towards a 35 which includes a 7 (physics HL), 6 (maths HL), 5 (Buisness HL), 6 (french ab initio) and 5 (english SL), with B in EE and C in TOK... so in total 37 point. But when I search up.. universities with the course I want to consider... I do have a range of options, satisfying the 37 point mark, but when I look at the HL, requirement, it says you must have 766, or 666. Which is quite impossible for me to get... cuz I am absolutely weak at buisness HL, and ther…

My dilemma is this: I have 3 universities to choose between. Aberdeen, Leeds and Nottingham. The choice is between Leeds and Nottingham, and they are so close that I can't decide. So what I was thinking of doing was putting Nottingham for my firm and Leeds for my insurance choice, even though they are both asking for the same amount of points (34). I honestly have no idea what I'm going to get in my exams, I'm assuming more than 34 but you never know. My reasoning behind this is that since Nottingham is ranked higher and is more prestigious, if they don't offer me a place because I don't meet the entry standards then Leeds will, as they are not so highly regarded. I do…

I thought maybe it would be good to know some oxford applicants' application process. Apparently, all of the oxford applicants are waiting for invitations of interview (or maybe you have gotten one). I am applying for EP and still have not heard anything yet... Kinda worried... Did anyone hear anything??

The summer goes by fast and most of us (applying in the UK for 2012 entry) are already into UCAS trying to finish our application as quickly as possible. EDIT: deleted every information initially written and this post is now about: Where are you applying this year? Have the increased fees affected your choices?

Good people of IBS. Since the application deadline for Oxbridge and all the fancy Med courses is on Monday, and people sometimes send their applications off earlier (or already know where they're going to apply in January), I decided to make this thread. This way, we can all moan about how much stress it is to wait for offers and meet people applying to the same unis. Therefore, post your predictions and choices here, so we can keep it all nice and organised. soooooo.... My predictions are in my signature, so I'm not going to repeat myself. Choices: Oxford (Merton) - Law (BA in Jurisprudence) LSE - Law QMUL - English and European Law Newcastle - Law Exeter - Law with …

Hey guys! I thought I'd start this since peeps will have started finalising their apps and unis for the UK. I thought maybe everyone can write about their choice of subject and which unis they're applying to and maybe their predicted score (only if you want to)? I figure we can all like support each other through the LOOOOOOONG wait that is coming up for us. I'll start: Will send/Sent Application on: 30th September 2013 Course: Law (M100) Unis (in order of preference): University of Oxford (Merton College) London School of Economics Durham University (St. Chad's college) King's College London University of Warwick Current status (20th January): Oxford - Conditional Offer …

So I graduated this spring and have decided to apply for universities in Scotland. I'm going to study some sort of chemistry, but I need some guidance to this weird educational system. I'm not at all familiar with the British school system and will probably ask very stupid questinos, but please answer them anyway. In my country you start with doing a 3-year course leading to a bachelor's degree. After that you apply for another 2-year course, giving you a masters degree. But when I look at UCAS, it seems that you apply for one or the other and can apply directly for a master's course, if you wish. How does that work? I'm very confused. What should I apply for? Secondly, m…

Hello, so I received my IB diploma in 2012. At that point I held conditional offers from Uni of Leeds and SOAS. However, I only received 35 points, which was about 3 points below my conditional offers. Thus, they withdrew their offers. I have re-taken 3 subjects in november increasing my score to 37 points with 18 points in my HLs (not that much of an improvement..i know) and a lowest score of 4 in math SL. Unfortunately, most Universities I'm prepared to pay 9000 pounds a year for require 38 points with 6/6/6 in all HLs eg. Kings college or SOAS. I'm planning to study something along the lines of politics or international relations preferably in combination with chinese,…

Hey everyone, Long story short, I am currently taking 4 higher level subjects; Physics, Math, Chemistry and English B. I am interested in applying to oxbridge, however, I have been told by my teachers that 4 higher level subjects are a waste of time. They said that the university will look at only 3 of them and not care about the fourth one. So is this true? would Oxford-Cambridge appreciate the fact that I have taken 4 higher level subjects or am I wasting my time? Thanks in advance

Hello, I'm an IB student finishing IB this year. I've came across this decision on which advice would be highly appreciated. I had a wish to study medicine at UK, but actually missed the deadline of UCAT tests. (yes I'm that stupid) And truly all universities I wanted to apply to require UCAT. My question is how bad it would be to take a gap year and than try to enter medicine at UK university? I would obviously work on volunteering or jobs at clinics to spend the gap year usefully. I'm just scared of how badly could it decrease my chance of getting a place at a university after a gap year? Thank you so much for any opinions or advices

Hey guys, I've been meaning to apply to universities in the United States all my life, but have recently decided to apply to universities in the UK in the future after a certain series of events. One thing I have noticed about the universities in the UK is that the all state a certain A-level/ IB Score that must be obtained in order to receive an offer. Let's say that required IB score is X, and if I receive X, will that confirm (to a 100%) a position for me in university Y? Thank you in advance!

HI, I am getting into IB diploma, next school year.Planning to study computer science alone or with something else-not yet decided. I would like to be accepted in one of the 10 universities in UK (not OXBridge). One teacher suggested me that i would choose SL MATHS -predicted for 7 (i am very good at maths) and to go for A-levels at the same time and to havebeen examined in all modules by next June. So when i will be ready for application i may have already the results of A-levels hopefuly with A grade (and this will be stated in my PS) and a prediction of SL mATHS with 7. Hello everyone, Well, I realized that I need to take a pre- interview tests such as LNAT or TSA etc..before the interview. I searched about this in the Oxford website, but still there are few things that I am not really sure how it works. well,,,,for example, PPE says applicants who do not take the pre-interview test will not normally be shortlisted for interview. What do I have to do to show them that I am going to take the test? or Is this mean that I have to give a result of it with application? But how can I give the result to them since interview is on december and TSA result comes out in next January? Always thank you for helping me

I decided to upload my statement stuff for the very ambitious people who want to go to Oxbridge etc. Even though I was rejected from Oxford after being invited for interview, my statement stuff indicates that its content is what they are looking for. I hope this helps my fellow IB'ers. For those of you who may not know, Oxford has an additional application form. Here you should write why you want to attend Oxford in the large space at the bottom of the application. Also you should have a SEPARATE reference for Oxford from a different teacher than the one who wrote your UCAS Referee Statement. You can see which schools I applied to and for which subjects so that the …

So I am trying to decide which university I should choose as my insurance. I was thinking of firming Imperial (I am 99% I will) and insuring UCL. Imperial asks for 43 with 777 and UCL for 39 with 19 total at HL. I am hesitant about insuring UCL because I am scared of what might happen if everything goes completely wrong with finals. I don't think it's likely that I will write less than 37 in the finals (which with +2 would be a 39) or less than a 766 but if I get sick or something just goes completely wrong I am afraid I might miss it. My other options would be Southampton with a 37 and Bath with a 36 but wouldn't it be sort of unfair if I ended up going to them with a 42…

Hi I have received my conditional offers for civil engineering and it's almost time to select my two firm choices. My insurance university will be Exeter which wants a 5 in Science HL, 5 in Maths HL and a 34 overall. The thing is, for the other unis, the conditions are slightly high and I am afraid I won't be able to make it. Bath wants a 6 in HL maths, 5 in SL Eng and 36 overall; Edinburgh and Durham (for general engineering) want 38 and 666 in HL subjects and Edinburgh wants an additional 4 in English. Glasgow wants a 34 with a 666 at HL. For the Scottish unis, they are offering me point of entry two and I believe (though I'm not sure) that I should be able to go down…

I am not sure if I should keep to these subjects because I want to study business management or commerce (but pretty flexible) in the UK but they do not all require math. Hi. I'm an international ('overseas') student and I wanna study in the UK. But unfortunately I can't takes loans or large financial aids, and I can only rely on scholarships, which usually cover a small percentage of tuition fees, or want to to have very very high grades. I was just wondering is there actually a way that an international student could afford tuition fees, without having to work so hard (to pay them)? Something like a loan, or a great discount on the fees? PS: my grade are pretty high and I think I could somehow show that I won't be a lazy student in the university!!

Ok, so coming from a country where we eat maple syrup for every meal and ride our moose (or is it meese..?) to school, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for which UK unis to go to? I know that Cambridge and Oxford are basically like the Harvard and Stanfords (or any of the Ivy League Schools) of U.S., so the competition is high. But other than those two, which obviously are great schools, would there be any other universities that you guys would recommend to go to in the UK?

Hey guys, I would like to ask if any of you applied to Cardiff for medicine. Are you aware that academic entry requirements for IB students is 776 (equivalent of A*A*A) and 38 (without ToK). This will also be the conditional offer. However for A-level students, the entry requirement is AAA. Cardiff Medical school seems to be the only UK university that equates an A-level "A" to be equivalent to an IB score of "7". All other universities equate an A to be equal to a 6. Based on this, it seems clear that Cardiff is disadvantaging IB students. Let me know if you are aware of this.

I'm an international student from Hong Kong and very interested in studying English in UK. However, due to various reasons, I have wrongly chosen to study English A1 SL, instead of HL, which now I regret so much. (But it'd be impossible to change subjects now. Hi, my name is Roberto. I'm Venezuelan but I am emigrating to Dominican Republic. In Venezuela I have obtained excellent grades, reflected in a 20/20 result. I'm thinking to study in an Dominican school called Saint George that offers IB. The problem is that it doesn't offer Math HL (SL, only) and I want to study Economics at LSE. There are only two IB schools in DR, the other one doesn't offer HL Math neither. What do you think I can do? Should I notify the university that I had no choice but taking SL instead of HL? I have a quick question when you apply to schools abroad (UK) do you have to submit your IB marks? Or can you submit your converted marks? I'm asking because I really want to study in the UK for medicine specifically I want to study at Imperial. For IB they require 38 points, which I know I can achieve if I work hard, but it is also a requirement to take chem and bio at HL, which as much as I begged my school they just wouldn't let me take. However, for Canadian students they require scores of 85%-90% both overall and in relevant Grade 12 subjects at the academic level. Hi! I was wondering if it is OK for me to apply for e.g. a joint degree of History and Psychology as well as a single degree of only History at the same university, just in case I don't get to the first one (as I have understood that getting in to do a single degree is a bit easier), or if this would be frowned upon by the university for some reason.

So I'm very pessimistic about how well I'll do in the exams even though they just started for me. I already know that I'll fail a few. It's not an excuse but due to our IB school's mismanagement, students like me who were taking Art HL had deadlines which were about less than a week ago, so I didn't have much time to cram in Physics and History and those are heavily packed subjects. I want to already consider retaking a few of my exams in November so that I can get the grades I need for my first choice uni. Since I applied for a deferred entry, can they still hold my place whilst I retake? Or do I need to apply again after I retake?

Hi guys, I was researching the economics course at Cambridge and the application process today and there was something I didn't quite understand. I was under the impression that there is only one university of Cambridge (like one campus) but on their website (http://www.study.cam.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/economics/) there seems to be quite a few. So are these "sub uni's" of Cambridge or how does it work? Are some better than others? And if you go to the link I attached, you'll see the different assessments for the course and I was wondering, what do they mean by "test at interview"? Will there be an interview and then a test or is the interview the test? Thanks!
