IB is hard, we all know it, and there's always the temptation to take subjects where it's easier to get a 7. I just base my switching of History HL to SL on that. However, there are some subjects in the IB (and also A-Levels that aren't relevant to us) that are considered "soft" and as a result, universities like Cambridge and LSE have openly spelled out their attitudes towards them (not positive). Other selective universities do not accept them either. This is the list of "soft" subjects that aren't recognized the same way as other IB subjects, according to http://timesonline.typepad.com/schoolgate/...a-level-s.html: • Business and Management • Design and Technology • I…

Since we have an Oxbridge thread, and I find some UCAS application processes quite confusing and questions-raising, I thought we might as well have a UCAS thread... All questions regarding UCAS should be addressed in this thread. And I want to start first. Does anybody else think that the 4000 characters limit is too little??? I have only written one paragraph explaining why I want to study in UK, haven't finished and have reached 616 characters. I don't think I could explain eeeeeverything that I'd like to include in my PS then. The mindmap indicates that the length is approximately 600 words, and I think it's very little! What font and size is used in UCAS apply fo…

Okay after seeing a tonne of questions about getting into Medicine in the UK recently, I thought I'd just save everybody some time and make a questions thread with a little list of frequently asked Qs. Please read through these to see if your question is answered here! ...and if it's not been answered already, please feel free to ask it on this thread so we can keep all the information together for future students so they can more quickly access the info they need. The summer goes by fast and most of us (applying in the UK for 2012 entry) are already into UCAS trying to finish our application as quickly as possible. EDIT: deleted every information initially written and this post is now about: Where are you applying this year? Have the increased fees affected your choices?

My mock exam results just came out and I got like 41-42 for my predicted grade. So, I saw the minimum requirement for applying to oxford is merely 39 points so I might want to give it a try. However, I realize that applying for oxford might be rather troublesome as it involves so many admission tests and UCAS and interviews, while I will be studying so hard for both IB and my German test for uni admission in Germany. Overall, I dont know if it worth a go to apply for oxford with my grade as I don't think my grade is extremely impressive, and I can not afford to invest more extra time on something that rarely work out. So do you have any similar experience when it…

Hey I am a native English speaker and I was just wondering if UK universities such as Nottingham, Oxford or Cambridge would allow college applications of students with English taken as a second language (acquisition). FYI; I'll be leaning over my sciences courses (physics and maths) in UNI.

Hello i am new here I just screwed up my IB exam with 24 points total and just scraped a diploma. The universities i applied for is Leicester (30 points) and Hull (28 points). I was originally predicted 28 points. My parents want me to go for a foundation course and they are really really pissed. I suggested doing a retake for Geography and Maths, but my dad fears universities would despise students taking retakes in examination. Is that true? I got the following (crappy) grades: HL - Bio = 5 - Business = 5 - Geo = 4 SL - Maths = 2 - French = 3 - English A1 = 5 Should i do a retake or foundation course? Someone help me, I am VERY worried, pissed and scared (of my dad th…

Hey, I'm interested in doing either PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) at Oxford or IR (International Relations) at London School of Economics. Is anyone else here interested in them? Does anyone know how many points I should approximately have to be accepted? The LSE website says min. 37 and 6-6-6 from HL, but according to our coordinator this is only for them to consider you, so in reality you need more points. Does anyone know how much more?

Hello guys I have just recently read the entry requirements for the LSE Accounting & Finance undergraduate course it states that LSE will require you to have 38 points HL math is desired but not necessary. Based on the fact that LSE does not have interviews with their potential students I would guess that they do only take into account your motivational letter or personal statement and obviously your grades. Now to my question ! How high is the chance of getting accepted with lets say 39 points and SL math but a very appealing personal statement and CV ? Of course I know that nobody will know the exact answer to this question however I would still be intereste…

Are there some unis with some decent economics courses (or economic-related) without such entry requirement? I have heard that Durham is quite decent and so is the Manchester uni - could you confirm? Looking forward to hear your opinions/suggestions In case you need my study subcjects: History HL Geogrpahy HL English HL Polish (my national language) SL Math SL Chemistry SL I should also add that there is no such possibility to study economics or buisness and whatsoever

Good people of IBS. Since the application deadline for Oxbridge and all the fancy Med courses is on Monday, and people sometimes send their applications off earlier (or already know where they're going to apply in January), I decided to make this thread. This way, we can all moan about how much stress it is to wait for offers and meet people applying to the same unis. Therefore, post your predictions and choices here, so we can keep it all nice and organised. soooooo.... My predictions are in my signature, so I'm not going to repeat myself. Hi everyone, Here's my situation: I just finished my application form, got my reference, personal statement and predicted grades ready. But when I finally wanted to upload my predicted grades the system told me that there was an error because I was placing grades for future examinations (I was on the education area of the application). Anyways, I also looked on the reference part (where it says predicted grades), but I can only put the total grade for the IB. It is not showing me any kind of area where I can put the specific predicted grades for every subject I'm taking. The application is asking me to leave the grade space as "pending" in the education area for eac…

Hey guys, I have taken my LNAT exam approximately two weeks ago. To do so I went trough the application process and have signed up to take the exam in a test facility in Switzerland. I know that the LNAT will be making my results available to me within early February according to their website. Also my universities are supposed to receive my results within 24h after the completion of the exams. Now I am wondering how the LNAT or Pearson respectively know which universities need my LNAT scores ? Will my universities be able to find my scores using my Name ? Hey guys! I have an offer at university of Edinburgh for 34 points, however I'm afraid I'm going to miss it by one point (worst case scenario.) I was wondering if anyone knew the university's policy on this? Is it possible for me to still get in? I've heard from other students that they might be nicer because they want international students, especially from countries outside of EU because we pay full tuition. I don't know how true this is. I've just started the International Baccalaureate, and I'm quite passionate about the subjects Philosophy, Politics and Economics. However, I am worried that my subject combination might prevent me from getting in, as I am not studying History or Mathematics at higher level (as I believe they recommend on the Oxford website.) My subjects are: HL Economics HL Art HL English HL Physics (probably going to drop to Standard Level) SL Maths SL Spanish ab initio Ignoring the other factors (intelligence, passion for your subject etc.) that contribute to being accepted by Oxford, would these subjects allow me to be accepted into Philosophy, Politics and Economics?

Hello, so I received my IB diploma in 2012. At that point I held conditional offers from Uni of Leeds and SOAS. However, I only received 35 points, which was about 3 points below my conditional offers. Thus, they withdrew their offers. I have re-taken 3 subjects in november increasing my score to 37 points with 18 points in my HLs (not that much of an improvement..i know) and a lowest score of 4 in math SL. Unfortunately, most Universities I'm prepared to pay 9000 pounds a year for require 38 points with 6/6/6 in all HLs eg. Kings college or SOAS. I'm planning to study something along the lines of politics or international relations preferably in combination with chinese,…

I decided to upload my statement stuff for the very ambitious people who want to go to Oxbridge etc. Even though I was rejected from Oxford after being invited for interview, my statement stuff indicates that its content is what they are looking for. I hope this helps my fellow IB'ers. For those of you who may not know, Oxford has an additional application form. Here you should write why you want to attend Oxford in the large space at the bottom of the application. Also you should have a SEPARATE reference for Oxford from a different teacher than the one who wrote your UCAS Referee Statement. OK, let's say I would like to apply for IR course at Royal Holloway.. It is written at the universities web that the minimum requirement for the course and the typical offer is 35 IB points.. If my predicted grade is 34, does it mean I have no chance of getting an offer? Hey all, I am an european student, but have been studying in the UK for the past 4 years. In my IB (2013 may) I chose English Lit+Lang A HL and achieved a grade 6. Shouldn't be a problem, but I always though that a grade 6 in English A would make this unnecessary. Am I right? Thank you!

Hey guys, Well I finally, after many troubles with this, decided to apply for economics and business degree. Althought I don't see myself as an economist my parents advise me to choose economics rather that business, or at least a joint degree telling me that busieness is kind of "all and nothing" soft degree and economics is something that will attract my future employees more. I agree with them but I have maths at only SL level, I am hopefully going to have predicted grade 7 and I don't suck at maths too much, but it is still SL not HL. Hi guys! I want to study computer science at Cambridge and I've been looking through the course requirements and they said that further mathematics is considered highly desirable, which means that I qualify for applying but will be at a disadvantage. The reason I didn't take further mathematics is because our school doesn't offer it. So what do you think? Are my chances slim with just HL math? Is there anything I could do to boost my chances with just HL math? I'm doing my EE in math about a subject related to computer science, but I doubt they care much about that. I just need to rant, I got rejected from the University of Edinburgh, my dream uni with a 42 776 higher level. At first, I was disappointed, but when i found out that my close friend got into the exact same course as I wanted to on a 34! HE GOT IN ON A 34 AND I GOT REJECTED ON A 42!!! its a broken system, a broken unethical system that rewards those who are willing to pay more. What's the point in having the government set up price ceilings for universities if they're just going to offer places to people who are willing to accept the people who are going to pay more, at the expense of the more qualified students.
