Hi all! I'm currently using the "Mathematics for International Student" (Haese & Harris Publications) as my main maths textbook and I was wondering if that would be enough for me to achieve good marks for Maths HL. There's another Maths book by IBID press but I'm not sure if its worth for me to get it Or should I just do questions from past papers? What ar ur thoughts?

I have been reading into the IB programme and the subjects that my school has assigned to me for the next two years, and the one that worries me mostly is Maths HL. I am a good maths student but whilst speaking to other people and reading this forum I have gotten the impression that the subject is quite difficult and challenging, but also I have some questions. 1) Discreet mathematics; series and differential equations; sets, relations and groups; statistics and probability. Shall my Maths HL class encompass all of those or only one or a few? Are they all needed to pass the IB Maths HL exam? 2) Considering the difficulty of the subject, should I make an effort during this…

I'd love it if you could share some tips and tricks for papers 1, 2 and 3. I'm at a stage where maths is kinda worrying me. I'm on my holiday break right now, but when I get back to school, my teacher's getting us to do all the papers to 'give us a chance to get higher predicted grades' for our uni applications. He's also said that if we don't manage to get at least a 4/5 overall, he'll enter us for the standard level maths paper which I really, really, really don't want and can't afford at all. As the dreaded may exams are inching closer (four months to go!), the worry's slowly consuming me. So, I thought about perhaps starting a thread where we could somehow gather…

---Author's Note--- This is the third draft of a concise guide I'm working on in regards to the new mathematical exploration IA; this started as an HL guide but has now been generalized to include the SL curriculum as well. Please do let me know if there are any improvements you can suggest, or any questions you have after reading through this. I plan to keep this updated and add to it as I work though my own IA. Thanks for taking the time to read through! ------------------------ Table of Contents Preface and Introduction to the Exploration The Process (to be added) Formatting (to be added) Acceptable Topics (SL) Acceptable Topics (HL) Grading and Evaluation Crit…

Hi. We got our first IA tasks in math HL last week, which is "Modelling a functional building" and I have a couple of questions about it. Since i have never done it before and our school isn't very experienced in IB yet, i figured i'd ask for help in here.. 1) Is there a maximum word limit for the task and if yes, what is it? I have about 3000 words already and I think I have barely covered half the task. I'm explaining everything quite thoroughly but I think all I write is quite relevant and without it it would be to superficial or hard to understand. 2) How much do you need to show your calculations? Do you need to show steb-by-step how you substitute, deduce and simpli…

Hello everyone, I am doing the second portfolio and I was almost finished (or so I thought) when I noticed a pattern. When I plotted the distance between A and B in a run as a function of the time running, I found that there seemed to be a pattern... I have an equation in the form y=ax^2+bx+c, where I already have the value of c (Original distance between the two?) I am not looking for answers or anything the like, but merely wondering if anyone had done if and if so, if they could give me a hint as to which direction I should pursue... Thanks beforehand

i've gotten up to the 3d part and i can't seem to figure out how to get the maximum number of parts. the question is: A cuboid is a finite 3d object. investigate the maximum number of parts (P) that are obtained with n cut. -Use geometry software to investigate the maximum number of parts for n=1,2,3,4,and 5. if someone can help me with that question and tell me the max parts per n value i can easily solve the rest. thanks

Hey everyone! Next year I am taking IB Math HL and I'm not really sure what to expect ... I heard its quite the challenege, and people that have gotten high 90's in honors classes are now getting 70's. What makes this class so hard?? This really scared me because I like math - when I'm good at it! This year I took Intermediate Algebra and trigonometry honors, which was an honors course for trig algebra II and some precalc. I received an overall average of 99 this year, but what will happen to me next year? Any input is greatly appreciated =)

I decided to take math HL for next year (grade 11). But everyone keeps scaring me about it. All my future iB friends have all taken English HL. They all keep telling me about how math HL is like suicide. Like how these kids who took regular math had like 98%, they came into math HL and ended up with 60%. I don't want my mark to be 60%! To give some of my background, I am NOT a genius, but I do enjoy math a lot. For those of you that know the Cayley math conest, I got 114 points, putting me in the top 15% of kids my age with math. I enjoy math class currently, becaues I am in regular classes, and it is so easy. I have always been in "regular" math, and never had to work ha…

Hi, So I noticed there are loads of threads about the common Maths levels but none about Further Maths, so I wanted to make this thread where we can exchange experiences, maybe help each other out if we're stuck and generally just talk about Further Maths... For starters, am I the only non-Asian person to be taking this course? Yes, yes, I know that comment is prejudiced but my observations so far corroborate my impression... Also, at my school (if we wish to take Further Maths), Further Maths is a self-study and not a normal subject like any other with a teacher(which is why I have 7 subjects). I have a guidance teacher who helps me out if I have problems understanding a…

Hi guys, I'm about to submit my IA idea for math and I just want a few pieces of advice choosing one. Currently, I'm very much interested in cryptography and machine learning which are the topics that I want to do my Math IA on, are these viable ideas? Earlier when I talked to my teacher, he said that writing about the Global Positioning System (GPS) would be a great idea, but I'd much prefer the other two topics. What should I do to ensure that I get a high grade while doing something that I actually enjoy?

So we have threads for Science options already, here comes the maths option thread. So for HL, what option are you all doing? Did you actually get to choose your option? My teacher actually chose our option for us, and we did Stats but it's something I'm so grateful for right now. I have to take a Stats course this semester at uni and it's all the IB Stats stuff so it's mostly revision. I'm listening to a lecture on the normal distribution right now actually and it's all coming back to me.

When Adam and Ben play against each other in tournaments outside the club, their point-winning probabilities remain the same (2/3 and 1/3 respectively), but the rules now require that players win by 2 points and therefore, that games may in theory be infinitely long Show that although Adam's point odds agains Ben are 2:1, his game odds are almost 6:1. Be sure to consider separately the cases of non-deuce and deuce games This question is a toughie anyone out there willing to contribute some of their imput on this question Thanks in advance

Hi guys! Just a little bit of personal background: I started the IBDP at Riga State Gymnasium #1 in Latvia 5 days ago. I'm taking Mathematics HL as my Group 5 subject, and also taking Further Mathematics HL as an additional subject (i.e., not included on the diploma). I love mathematics and have some background in Computer Science, which seems to be quite relevant in the Discrete Mathematics Option, with all the graph algorithms and what not. I also probably know almost all of the Calculus Option thanks to Robert Ghrist's (UPenn) wonderful Single Variable Calculus Coursera course I took this summer. My school does not have an FM teacher, so I'm left (almost) on my own…

So I just attempted paper 1 for 2014 Syllabus Specimen Paper. I'm quite conflicted on what to make of it, I thought it was kind of borderline hard, and asked questions which differed from the usual pattern. Plus there were some questions which were quite different from the previous papers like Question 7 and Question 9. What are your thoughts on this, and if you could please help in solving these questions! Thanks a lot! P.S - Just google the specimen paper, and you'll find it

Ok, I'm a big math person, which is probably why I ditched IB math so long ago and just took up individual studies which go way further than any IB math class can offer, but I just can't help but wonder what Math HL is...I mean I had to take IB Calculus, which would be Math SL i guess, becuase i need an IB math, but I really dont get what the class is about. All I heard is that it's not much math into it, mainly theories, and not enough calculus. Anyone in it mind sharing some specific details? i.e. is it Calculus at a higher level? or simply a branch of the history of math?

Hey guys, as you know exams are in less than two weeks and, probably as all of you, I am stressed for maths (I need to get a 7 to meet my university requirements). I think creating a post to share suggestions and useful revision tips would be useful. My main suggestions are the following. 1)Do past papers 2)If you manage to put your hands on the questionbank, do past questions divided in topics. I feel that this technique allows you to understand the typical exercises better than doing past papers. If the questionbank is not available, just scroll through the papers and do all the exercises of the same topic together 3)The section which I find…

My original IA topic for HL Math was optimizing the surface area of a ring, horn, and spindle torus given a fixed volume. My teacher told me that it was too simplistic, and that there was not enough original math in the paper, so I'm searching for a new topic. I came across the least squares regression, which is used for polynomial regressions and involves calculus. I was thinking about maybe applying this to some aspect of economics/markets/businesses. I found the Solow–Swan model as a potential starting point. Would it be a good to use something like this for my IA, and would it be complex enough for a HL Math IA? If not, how could I make it more original and …

My final grade from this year was a 5. But, I need a 7 and soon. I'm starting a study group online on G+ over the Summer. Possibly an hour a week. I already have a few people signed up from my school but still, the more the merrier. Productively using the last Summer before school ends could make your year. Tell me if you're interested. Hi guys im about to begin the IB. I will be doing phyHL and chemHL(maybe). I wanted to know if you guys think i should do math hl or math further hl. I have done Maths Kangaroo and scored a gold medal(135.5/150points) and ive done the brasilian math olympiad (OBM) and scored a silver medal. I also got an A*, and a best of the world award in my Math IGCSEs. I am good in math and it has always been easy to me. My teacher said i could do math further hl, but is itworth it??? Is it too hard?? Does it really count towards ur college application (engineering ou pure mathematics)?? Thanks and sry for bad eng im brasilian. ... What do you guys think? Thanks for the help!

Ok just to give you a little bit of background, I'm from Germany but have been going to an International school all my life but this year (10th grade or year 11) I did an exchange year to the UK where I switched from studying the iGCSE's to the GCSE's. I have always been good at maths and it's also been one of my favourite subjects for a while. I was predicted an A* this year and I've also been getting them throughout this year. However during my exams, something happened, Paper 1 was easy but for some reason I messed up Paper 2 not as though I did horribly bad but still I think I won't get my A* because of it, and instead I'll "only" be able to achieve an A. I'm starting…

wow..... this investigation that i received today is due in 1 1/2 weeks from now and yet i don't have any clues on how to even start this thing. The investigation is about analyzing the relationship between certain probability distributions and the first part of it asks you to build a model. So its about two players playing Tennis and they play for 10 points- and one person wins about twice as many points as the other person. OK HERE COMES THE PART WHICH I'M COMPLETELY LOST. The instruction tells you to find an appropriate model for the distribution of X, the number of points won by the player who wins twice as many points. So what do you think about this??? what would b…

Hi guys, I need some advice... I started math HL with the intent of stretching my mind, and becoming a more mature 'math thinker', I thought that I would do decent in this course (5ish), as my math was pretty alright (90-95 avg). However, nearing the end of the first year, I find myself to be struggling in this class, and I just got my recent predicted grade back for the third school term, and I was predicted a 4! I already saw it coming, as I did pretty poorly for my recent tests, but I am at the point where I am starting to worry that I will never raise my score beyond a 5. I need a solid 6 by the fall, because those scores would be sent to universities in the EA/ED ro…
