---Author's Note--- This is the third draft of a concise guide I'm working on in regards to the new mathematical exploration IA; this started as an HL guide but has now been generalized to include the SL curriculum as well. Please do let me know if there are any improvements you can suggest, or any questions you have after reading through this. I plan to keep this updated and add to it as I work though my own IA. Thanks for taking the time to read through! ------------------------ Table of Contents Preface and Introduction to the Exploration The Process (to be added) Formatting (to be added) Acceptable Topics (SL) Acceptable Topics (HL) Grading and Evaluation Crit…

I'd love it if you could share some tips and tricks for papers 1, 2 and 3. I'm at a stage where maths is kinda worrying me. I'm on my holiday break right now, but when I get back to school, my teacher's getting us to do all the papers to 'give us a chance to get higher predicted grades' for our uni applications. He's also said that if we don't manage to get at least a 4/5 overall, he'll enter us for the standard level maths paper which I really, really, really don't want and can't afford at all. As the dreaded may exams are inching closer (four months to go!), the worry's slowly consuming me. So, I thought about perhaps starting a thread where we could somehow gather…

I have been reading into the IB programme and the subjects that my school has assigned to me for the next two years, and the one that worries me mostly is Maths HL. I am a good maths student but whilst speaking to other people and reading this forum I have gotten the impression that the subject is quite difficult and challenging, but also I have some questions. 1) Discreet mathematics; series and differential equations; sets, relations and groups; statistics and probability. Shall my Maths HL class encompass all of those or only one or a few? Are they all needed to pass the IB Maths HL exam? 2) Considering the difficulty of the subject, should I make an effort during this…

Hi all! I'm currently using the "Mathematics for International Student" (Haese & Harris Publications) as my main maths textbook and I was wondering if that would be enough for me to achieve good marks for Maths HL. There's another Maths book by IBID press but I'm not sure if its worth for me to get it Or should I just do questions from past papers? What ar ur thoughts?

Hello everyone! Now I am 10 grade student at IB school and im on that period of time when we need to choose the DP subjects. I wanted to listen to your advices on how to choose a math course correctly. I am not sure what I want to take as a major. but I am really interested in Economics and Engineering stuff. I am planning to take Economics as HL and probably Physics as HL. Also, I am a really math enjoyer but the problem is I don't have high marks in it, I ended up 9th grade with 5/7. I do really understand every topic in the class but on the summatives we get some 1 course stuff lmao. so, pls help me, I am open to every idea

I'm M24, working on my maths IA now, with no help from a teacher. Our maths teacher tells us to chatGPT everything related to the IAs (despite the fact that they are literally incorrect about IB regulations), and then when we come up to her for confirmation of our topics, she immediately says: "you lost me." This is how lots of independent research lead me to the following possible questions for my IA: 1. How can SAT (separating axis theorem) be extended to handle dynamic objects with changing shapes and orientations in real-time? 2. How can SAT (separating axis theorem) be extended to handle dynamic objects with changing shapes and concave and convexity? 3…

Hi! I'm currently writing my IA for my HL AA class and I have a draft but my teacher says there isn't any HL math in it. I wrote it about comparing the richter scale and moment magnitude scale for earthquakes, but I'm not sure how I can incoperate HL math into it. My teacher has no ideas on how to help me, and its due soon so if anyone has suggestions please help!

Heya, so basically for my math IA I decided to make my own life hard and choose a topic like 'celestial navigation'. More specifically, I'm doing my paper on smthing along the lines of 'how to find your geographic location using celestial navigation'. Soo, I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me out? I've found some resources but I'm still very confused on how to use them and stuff like that, so if anyone would be willing to lend me a hand, pls let me know as soon as you can, bc ya boi is running out of time due to my own procrastination. Thank you😭

Basically my question is, do teachers have to pay for past papers? Or can they access it as long as they're affiliated with an IB school? I asked my teacher about this and she said she can't access the past papers which is why I'm slightly confused

Hey guys, I was woking on my maths internal assesment when I decided to look up soome examples online about my topic (golden ratio on my local city) and I found out that the topis is "overused" and that I could get a bad grade because the topic lacks from creativity. This golden ratio in architecture topic really interested me and even more considering that theres no information about it being used on my city online (Im from Montevideo, Uruguay) so I would be the one that makes the whole progress and maybe, that could compensate tge creativity issue. What do you guys think? Is it really like that? I also have concerns on the mathematical usage as I havent found any cal…

hello, right now I'm deciding topics for my internal assessment for math. I'm interested to different online video games and formula 1, but not sure if the topic from these interest can or cannot become a IA topic. The topic i'm looking at currently: - the more eco friendly formula 1 racing schedule this topic would possibly relate to Voronoi diagram and graph theory, to minimize distance travel between different grand prix, but on f1 calendar their are around 22 races; so graph theory might be a disaster. - Genshin impact character damage optimization this I'm really interested but not sure since it might not relate to the course …

I was planning on doing my Math AA HL IA on the collatz conjecture and try to predict it. Im using coding to create an experiment sample for Personal Engagement and then create two equations- a polynomial equation to predict the sequence and test how accurate it is. The other one is using logs or mod im not really sure and again I test its accuracy. I just wanted to know how good this is or if its too basic because im not sure if this is even right and what else I could add.

Hello, My teacher has just recently told me and my class about the Math IA. I'm wondering if these following two topics I have come up with would be viable for a possible Math IA, or if I should change course and choose a different topic: Correlation IA on the number of human cannibalism cases (from 1900s to present day) and the presence of environmental stressors (environmental stressors are defined as events or things in the surrounding environment that cause stress; for example, lack of food and clean water, physical and mental ailments, etc.) Logarithmic IA on the number of rats and the spread of plague/number of disease cases. My teacher s…

Assume the eye level of the person to be also 5 feet for simpler analysis.

I graduated IB in 2018 and studied Math HL with discrete math as my option. I also wrote my EE in mathematics / physics and received an A. I'm currently studying programming / computer science and game design. I replied to a post a few years ago about writing Math IAs where I gave some advice and talked about my paper and a lot of people requested copies of my IA for reference. I've heard that with the covid situation and online learning a lot of people are facing some challenges with their research and are doing explorations based on previous students' work etc. With that in mind I thought I would make a post offering to share some of my resources and advice based o…

I'm looking to write an IB Math HL AA IA (Exploration) related to Probabilistic Language Models (like predicting future words with n-grams) or anything related to linguistics. I'm having trouble picking a topic though that will have the correct mathematical rigor and sophistication and are able to be structured like an IA. Are there any topics within the field that could make a good IA question that I could research? Thank you so much!

Dear all, For my maths IA I have derived my own mathematical proof of Rothe's formulas for the generation of involution numbers. I did not seem to find any such proofs online, I only found the formulas themselves; I came up with a method for both the summation formula and the recurrence relation, however I am also planning on extending this to applications in group theory and coming up with the exponential generating function. Does anyone know if I would be able to publish this in some small journal? I got the green light in terms of copyright. Thank you!

Hi! I am looking for a topic for mi math IA, but I am worried that my topic is not enough for the subject to get a high grade. My question to develop until know is measuring the effectiveness of a bull's genetic in a cattle flock regarding changing weight in animals, using normal distribution and then by the use of expected value calculate the probability of having a certain genetic characteristic.

Hi, this is my first time doing an IA of any sort because I just moved from Texas to Florida for my senior year and I’m at an IB school. Apparently they have been working on the Math HL IA for a year already and I just started. It’s due in 3 days and I just need help trying to get a topic so I can do this. I was thinking about something to do with the probabilities in poker/gambling but idk if that will have enough content. Please help kinda screwed here.

I've gotten to the stage where I need to write my IA in Maths AA HL. When it came to brainstorming I had an idea that I ended up pursuing in my Extended Essay (pathfinding algorithms) so I was left with nothing for the IA. I started researching pseudorandomness and a mathematical approach to it but it seems to me I bit off more than I can chew. There are ideas of recursions, sums and normal numbers but I don't really see how I could apply it to this format. For example, there is a function which was proved as a way to generate normal numbers which can, in turn, be used to randomly generate numbers but would I have to prove it myself in the paper? H…

Hey! I took my IB exams in May 2021 and I got a 7 in Maths AA SL. Next year, in May 2022 (or if it isn't possible, in 2023), I would like to take the exam in Maths HL. Is it possible to study the lacking content in less than a year now? And could I send the same IA? I know it would be marked worse, but probably only a few points for the 'Mathematics' criterium since it would not have HL content, right?

So I have this idea for a Math IA but I've already completed mine so it's kind of useless for me. A statistical exploration on the amount of time required for IAs. For example, the ESS IA "requires" 10 hours of instruction + work time. Math IAs "require" 30 hours of instruction + work time. Obviously ask your seniors and you KNOW it doesn't work like that. I've probably spent 100+ hours on each IA. The way this can be carried out is like you ask alumni from your school and other school, or even ibsurvival, how long it approximately took them to complete a named IA, along with the grade. You don't need anyone's name and stuff, just the subject, time, and grade. Then m…

Hi. I am currently trying to write my math IA and am having some troubles with it😔. My topic is on the effects of Covid 19 on the world population and how long this pandemic will last. I was planning on using the SIR model but now I am not entirely sure as a friend from another class who is also looking at Covid 19 mentioned that SIR model might not be a good model to use as it does not take into consideration some of the changing situations. But my own teacher said that it is fine to use that model. As of now, I have more or less written out the formulas and explained how the formulas are used but I don't know what to do from there. Can someone please advice m…

Hello All, Just want your thoughts on the IA topic - "How far the popular claim that all things from architecture to paintings is based on golden ratio?" - and I want to refute the claim that Monalisa, last supper and roman architecture may not really be based on Golden Ratio. How do you think this topic is? I was thinking of picking up really good papers and see how they arrived at. And then propose my "thoughts" where they went wrong. Is this a good HL topic? Please let me know.
