I'd love it if you could share some tips and tricks for papers 1, 2 and 3. I'm at a stage where maths is kinda worrying me. I'm on my holiday break right now, but when I get back to school, my teacher's getting us to do all the papers to 'give us a chance to get higher predicted grades' for our uni applications. He's also said that if we don't manage to get at least a 4/5 overall, he'll enter us for the standard level maths paper which I really, really, really don't want and can't afford at all. As the dreaded may exams are inching closer (four months to go!), the worry's slowly consuming me. So, I thought about perhaps starting a thread where we could somehow gather…

I have been reading into the IB programme and the subjects that my school has assigned to me for the next two years, and the one that worries me mostly is Maths HL. I am a good maths student but whilst speaking to other people and reading this forum I have gotten the impression that the subject is quite difficult and challenging, but also I have some questions. 1) Discreet mathematics; series and differential equations; sets, relations and groups; statistics and probability. Shall my Maths HL class encompass all of those or only one or a few? Are they all needed to pass the IB Maths HL exam? 2) Considering the difficulty of the subject, should I make an effort during this…

Hi all! I'm currently using the "Mathematics for International Student" (Haese & Harris Publications) as my main maths textbook and I was wondering if that would be enough for me to achieve good marks for Maths HL. There's another Maths book by IBID press but I'm not sure if its worth for me to get it Or should I just do questions from past papers? What ar ur thoughts?

---Author's Note--- This is the third draft of a concise guide I'm working on in regards to the new mathematical exploration IA; this started as an HL guide but has now been generalized to include the SL curriculum as well. Please do let me know if there are any improvements you can suggest, or any questions you have after reading through this. I plan to keep this updated and add to it as I work though my own IA. Thanks for taking the time to read through! ------------------------ Table of Contents Preface and Introduction to the Exploration The Process (to be added) Formatting (to be added) Acceptable Topics (SL) Acceptable Topics (HL) Grading and Evaluation Crit…

Preface: I realize this wall of text is unatractive, so if anyone wants to answer without reading my gratuitous commentary, I've bolded and separated the main questions I'm hoping to have answered, and italicized what I felt was semi-important and clarifying. I realize that these threads might be very common, however I've been having trouble finding what I need. I've looked over several materials for the mathematics internal assessment, official and unofficial, including the guide on this forum, but cannot figure it out for myself. My first question is: What is the goal of the Internal Assessment in Mathematics? At its most basic level, what is the goal? What am I t…

Greetings IB Maths Community! So considering the removal of the Matrices Topic from the Maths HL from 2014 onwards, does this mean that one cannot use matrix methods for other question types in the exams anymore? (Would a matrix method be included in the markscheme and/or the examiner mark the matrix method?) This is primarily concerned with using the matrix method for: - Vector Cross Product [to shave off working times] - Solutions of Linear Equations (Three Equations with Three Unknowns) [---> Honestly, the row reduction method is such a pain (unless, mayhaps someone can create a reliable 'row reduction solution method'?)] Thanks in advance!

Why not only rely on past papers? In my opinion, the best preparation with past papers is not to look over mark scheme. Essentially, as the name suggests, mark schemes only aim to aid teachers to mark student’s work on his paper. Not only does it lack with the detailed explanation, but also students lose their opportunity to encounter real IB style questions if they rely too much on mark scheme. For section A questions it relatively gives a good explanation; for Section B questions, however, when things get lengthy, explanations tend to be very concise and often do not make sense for students. It solely aims to guide teachers to base their grading criteria; it …

This is from May 2008 paper 1: The random variable T has the probability density function f (t) = pi/4 (cos(pi*t/2)), -1 < t < 1 Find (a) P(T = 0) The answer is zero on the markscheme - the working shows that they've integrated with the limits 0 and 0 to get this... but why? Would you get zero if the question was P(T = 1) ? Is it only because you're trying to find a very specific value/pdf in a cdf function that the probability of getting that very specific number is near to nothing/zero?? Any help would be appreciated!

so i got my year 1 test back and i failed miserably (below 40%). I really don't know what to do. I studied so hard for this test over the summer and in the first month of school, but I just cannot seem to get my math grades up. I understand the concepts, but whenever we have a test, I clam up and just forget everything. I have tried to get my anxiety under control but I really don't know what to do anymore. dropping is not an option as I need this subject for university entrance. Maybe my studying techniques are wrong? I really don't know what to do... I'm so frustrated because I tried so hard.

Hello I am currently working on my maths IA and the one this year really makes you think sort of out of the box... the problem is based on dimensions and deviding objects in maximum possible parts I managed to find the general formulas and prove them by induction.. the only problem is that although it does work, everything is based on the assumption that my recursive formula for the 3rd dimension works In 2d i cut the circle and get the recursive of previous number of pieces pbtained + the number of the cut... Can someone give me any clues on how to prove the recursive formula for the third dimension? cause you can sort of "see" it, but really no obvious justification..…

Hello , Well I'm currently in Math HL we're doing 3D Planes and lines in space, with questions like x, y, z, finding acute angles, whether they're perpendicular/parallel/coplanar etc... This is still my first year of IB and so far the hardest topic I've come across, I'm finding it really hard to understand (the 2D planes with just x and y are okay, mainly 3D I find difficult). So my question is, in your experienced opinions, is this chapter one of the hardest? Or is it the horrible truth that if I'm struggling with this /simple/ chapter I've got a very bleak future in Math HL? Also I get pretty confuse when I look at the Admission Requirements for most Universities the…

So, as I further dive into post-graduate papers I simply do not contain the brain capacity (yet?) to comprehend, I'm gaining an increasingly certain belief that doing an HL exploration on chaos theory/it's applications is not my cup of tea. (again, yet(?)) Our option topic is calculus, and what I've come to understand (with questionable accuracy) is that the chaos theory falls rather into the "discrete maths territory", whatever that is. I've already suggested the topic to my teacher and he appeared to have no hesitations on asking for the rationale and the mathematical development, due yesterday. (yay snow break?) (I mean I could've asked him about these if it weren't fo…

Im not too sure if this is both HL and SL btw, but as I do HL, I prefixed it HL. Okay, so currently we are doing radians and all that, and I have a quiz on it tomorrow. I was looking at my table of sine and cosine values for the 16 point circle, and I discovered a pattern that might make things easier for others doing the same thing Oh btw, the sixteen point circle is: The important thing here is to note the radian measures, they actually help in this case So here's the table and explanation I have (I might have missed some points out, let me know if I have any mistakes). http://www.scribd.com/doc/41721338 Enjoy! edit: scribd killed a lot of the formatting, sorry

I have a questiong about planes intersecting. I have two questions from earlier exams that I don't really understand how to solve. The questions I am wondering about are question 11(a), (b) and © on the M11/5/MATHL/HP2/ENG/TZ1/XX paper, and question 7(b) on the M09/5/MATHL/HP2/ENG/TZ1/XX paper. The questions are about lines intersecting at either points or lines when there is a variable (a) in the plane equation. Example 7(a): Plane 1: x+y+2z=2 Plane 2: 2x-y+3z=2 Plane 3: 5x-y+az=5 Find the value of a for which the planes do not meet at a unique point. When I look at the markscheme for help they seem to be using matrices, but since I am a May 2014 student I have no…

Hi, I am a little bit confused with how to use vector notation properly. For example, given point A (1, 2, 3) and B (4, 5, 6), then vector AB will obviously be (3, 3, 3). However, one of my friends told me that I have to write vector AB as a column vector. This is because (3, 3, 3) is the notation for a co-ordinate, rather than a vector. Is this true? and will I get marked down in an exam if i write (3, 3, 3) instead of a column vector? Thanks!

So I'm taking Math HL and I love it. It's really fun and challenging etc and the core isn't much of a problem. My school offers the discrete math option and as we all know finals are coming up. I've realized that there are about 70+ theorems/corollaries/proofs etc for number theory and a lot of terms to memorize for graph theory as well as a couple of algorithms. I understand most of it but I'm having a bit of trouble memorizing everything, not to mention some of the proofs. Does anyone have any advice on what to focus on and what difficult proofs are worth memorizing for paper 3? Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, I have questions that I failed to solve. Could any of you help me? 1) if (z+1)/(z-1) = cosx + i sinx, show that z= -i cot(x/2) I found that z is purely imaginary, and tried to replace z with bi and then solve for b, but it didn't work that well 2) if z is a root of the equation [(z+1)/(z-1)]^5 = 1, show that z^4 + 2z^2 + 0.2 = 0 I believe I have to solve the prior question in order to do this question. 3) Hence show that [tan^2 (pi/5)] [tan^2 (2pi/5)] = 5 and [tan^2 (pi/5)] [tan^2 (2pi/5)] = 10 I don't even know where to start off with... help! It would be great if you can show me your steps! Thanks

So, I'm not the greatest at math. During my sophomore year I got an a first quarter and straight B's the next three. (However this was just Ny state regent standards, known to be lightwork compared to IB) I hate studying and math work, so I never really completed all the hw nor studied for tests. To make matters worse, I have the chronic habit of falling asleep in classes I find boring, like to the point where have my notes have giant lines across them because I sometimes fall alseep while writing. (I have tried sleep, caffiene, wasabi, gum and mints all to no avail.) in May my parents made my take the HL maths course. I wasn't worried, as I thought my advisor would look …
