Hello, Unfortunately I found out that the topic I chose to do the math (HL) exploration in, didn't work, therefore I started a new one. It's about the the great pyramid. A lot of historians assume that the built of the great pyramid took only 20 years. I don't really believe that. So actually in my exploration I'm trying to prove that it was possible to build such a masterpiece in 20 years If I'm able to prove that, then it might really taken 20 years. But if my calculations reach 100 years for example, then I would have disproven the assumption. My problem is I want to include difficult math in my exploration, but I don't really know, which topics I may include...…

I want to do my IA on calculus or differential equations but any idea i have (e.g. Game theory, SIR modelling) is too simple for AA HL and i want to score full on exploration. I did consider Riemann Hypothesis but it seems like differential equations score well, and I'm a mediocre HL student. Anything about differential equations that lies within the scope of math AA HL?

Hi guys. I am currently considering doing a maths IA that involves logarithmic regression. Whilst I understand that a logarithmic regression line can be worked out by plugging it into a GDC (like the ones my school uses), will we still be awarded for calculating it by hand, using formulae step-by-step, rather than letting the calculator do it all for us?

I have been wondering quite lately when I switched from a petrol car engine to a diesel car engine that it is much more fuel-efficient, I have a math project coming up and I wanted to take this into the further investigation, therefore, do my own measurements and modeling to compare the fuel efficiency in both cars. There will be a rate of change in the mpg when accelerating in the highway but also in the city(in other words there maybe calculus involved?), so is it a good topic to take into investigation? does it have a sufficient amount of math? and if you have some sources about this particular topic please let me know. Thanks a lot!!!

Hello everyone, My IA outline is due in 3 days but now after I realized that my topic requires calculus and integration which I have never done in my life. Do you think I can manage otherwise do you have any recommendation for a topic that has good math involved for an HL student and insist with cars because cars are interesting to me. Please help I don't know what to do!!!!

I have made many research looking for something involving cars and calculus. First I had something involving Navier stokes equation but my supervisor said it was really hard and I had to avoid it. But then I don't seem finding anything involving super cars and calculus. I wanted to do something with launch control in a car and how could it help a car at the start of a race to avoid burnout but don't know if there is calculus? I also wanted to talk about Bernoulli's principle and how a wing could help drag but again do not know if the calculus involved is sufficient? Then I thought about picking planes(isn't as much interesting to me) "the optimal angle and accel…

Hello everyone, I have made some research on a math topic that involves calculus and cars. I was interested in talking about aerodynamics which involved Navier Stokes equation and after asking my supervisor, I came into conclusion that it will be very hard topic. Now I've been looking for a topic involving cars and calculus but I don't seem to find a good one for a math HL student, it will be very helpful if any of you gave me a good topic. Thanks a lot.

Hi, I was wondering if it would be possible to change "tiers" in IB subjects at the beginning of year 12 knowing you find, lets say, SL maths easy and this is evident in assessments taken. Would it be possible to change to HL maths?

Hey, I am currently in the process of searching for a maths IA topic. One of the ideas I came up with was to do something concerning Coronavirus. There is a lot of data on that and maths to do (i think). Do you think it's a good idea? Or will everyone do their IA's on coronavirus this year? Would that be a trap?

Hello I am really struggling with simply finding a good topic for my math IA that is at HL level. I was thinking of modeling the spread of gossip as a different approach to modeling the spread of disease but still using the same mathematics. However, I don't know if its going to work and am open to any ideas. Thanks in advance!

Hello people, so I am writing my math HL ia on the option discrete mathematics. More specifically on graph theory, and the traveling salesman problem. Does anyone know of any useful algorithms I could use in order to find the most efficient route between different points in the map. I just need the algorithm, everything else is ok. Would really appreciate the help, since the one I was going to use seems to have been taken down from the web. Anyways, thanks

So for my Math IA, I'm looking at the relationship of the height hyperbolic paraboloids (the pringles shape) and the stress on the structure. At this point, I have the data I need to graph this relationship, but now I don't know how to incorporate HL math into this. I want to include integrals in any way possible, either 2d or 3d. Any suggestions would help so much.

I have to have my IA topic picked out as soon as possible, and one topic that I came up with was finding the relationship between the height of a hyperbolic paraboloid (as a roof) and the weight it can withstand. I will personally engage in this topic by 3d printing different heights and testing them out myself. I was wonder what HL math could be used in this topic, what I have so far is functions (partial derivatives: used in the background information in stress formulas to explain why the hyperbolic paraboloid is a good roof), statistical tests (to find relationships). Any help whatsoever would be appreciated.

So far for my math IA, I've come up with the following: I will research individual countries' economic and weather conditions. Using personally made formulas to calculate a weather score and economic score for the countries, I will pinpoint which roof is best for that country, then I will test out the top few picks by 3d printing them and testing them with weights and etc, and find the best overall roof. Basically I have no idea how I'll do this and I don't know the HL math that will be used in this process, and I'm wondering if I'm over-complicating it.

Hey guys I really need some help with my math ia topic. So my idea is to model something basic with resonance using differential equations and then see how closely real life reflects that. Like a child on a swing, wind on waves etc... simple experiments for resonance in springs for example, then do an experiment and compare results to try to understand behaviour. Could be connected to suspension in the bridge. Then try to apply that to the collapse of tacoma bridge if it is feasible. At the moment my teacher said the idea is fine but it seemed to be more of a physics topic? Also I'm not sure whether my approach is correct. Any advices will be appreciated. Cheers…

Im a hl maths student and i wanted to do my maths IA on a topic related to calculus as that was the option that my school choosed. And i came across optimisation of packagings. However ive seen that many people simply use the differentiation method to find the optimum surface area of the cans or products they are investigating. Hence to make it more complex i would want to use a unconventional theory or equation such as the brachistrone theory to find the optimum surface area of a can. Is it possible are there any other theories that i can use? and should i find the optimisation of a can or are there other things that i can find the optimisation of? or is this too simple,…

Hi, I was planning on writing my exploration on Fourier Series and its application in music, specifically maybe showing the function of the overtones?? idk because I can't seem to find any good source that would examine this and although I see the link between these topic, I still do not see really the way it intertwines and my deadline for the first draft is in 2 days:) did anyone do their exploration on similar topic? is it doable? are Fourier Series even doable for math ia? please help me

Hey all, I've been in a lot of stress trying to find a math HL IA topic. One that I've thought of concerns using calculus in medicine to do something relating to blood flow using poiseuille's law; however, I don't know what I can do or investigate. I'm truly lost and any help would be appreciated . I got inspiration from the blood flow portion of this Prezi:https://prezi.com/z56alvfoyncf/calculus-applications-to-biology-and-medicine/ Another topic I thought of involves using various tumor growth models/equations to determine the best model as demonstrated here:http://f18.middlebury.edu/MATH0225A/Projects/Chapter%202%20Projects/Cancer%20Growth.pdf. I have a question concerning criterion D, reflection. So, in the N14 subject report they state that "reflection needs to take place throughout the exploration, through candidates isolating themselves from the problem, to see it from another point of view and to analyze its limits...", now what do they mean when they say that we should analyze the limits of the problem? I get that we should reflect and evaluate our approach and recognize limits such as assumptions but what’s this all about? Furthermore, in the N15 subject report it is stated that “critical reflection has a metacognitive aspect to it that involves isolating a problem, looking at it from different perspectiv…

Hi everyone, This is probably my second topic on IB Exploration HL, but I have finally chosen a topic which I find interesting and fun to investigate. I am investigation the Gabriel's Horn Paradox and the limitations to it (why it isn't technically that much of a paradox). I wanted to ask you guys if you know about this paradox? If you do, what limitations do you see to this paradox? I have read about it being a special case, like harmonic series. Can't really understand that! If anyone could help out... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabriel%27s_Horn#Apparent_paradox Furthermore, what should I include in the exploration? Should I start by actually showing proof of the par…

Finally found an IA Topic after weeks of researching. Planned to do something on queuing theory. Read through it and understood that it's mainly calculation with arrival rate, time to wait before reaching the end of queue etc. (Correct me if I'm wrong). I'm just not sure how an IA is supposed to look like when applying queue theory. Choose a situation and start investigating the values? Is it just that? Is there suppose to be more to it than just calculations. Just felt quite sceptical and had to ask. Anyone out there who has done queuing theory before is kind enough to share with me your experience or even example IAs? And also any other tips to find…

Hi Everyone, I'm in the middle of IA season right now, and Maths has really got me in a pinch. I'm working on my exploration at the moment, and the topic that I have chosen is using linear regressions to predict the outcome of elections. The case specific case that I'll be using is the upcoming Spanish elections on the 10th of November, so that I can compare my results to the final ones. However, I don't really know how I can include exploration and not just proofs an theory. An idea I had was seeing how the timespan of the polls (when I begin taking data points and where I stop - so the length of time) can affect accuracy. But again I'm really confused by the whole…

I completed a draft of my math HL IA on group theory and its application on the Rubik's Cube. My class didn't study group theory as part of the course, so my teacher needed me to include and explain definitions from group theory, including the axioms, homomorphisms, cosets, Lagrange's Theorem, etc. The rest of my IA, after the definitions and explanations, has to do with applying group theory to the Rubik's Cube, which was all fine. The problem is, my IA is currently at a 35% similarity rating on Turnitin, and my teacher told me I needed to lower it. All definitions were cited correctly and paraphrased, so I didn't copy and paste anything, and I included my own examples f…

Hi! I am going to calculation the volume of the air in 330ml Coca Cola can for my Math IA ( I am in MATH HL). I am wondering whether if it shows personal engagement. How can I apply this knowledge more widely. The idea in my mind is there any ratio between the volume of the liquid and the air in the can. But honestly I am not sure if it would be creative or interesting enough. I am not sure what the IB is looking for in terms of the IA. The last question is ,what should i say in my introduction!
