For the IB math HL exam I have heard from the graduates of M19 exams that slowly the exams are getting harder and that IB is tryna test us on our intuitiveness than what we can just regurgitate information or just solve problem, based on how we were taught. So in order to really prepare for my upcoming M20 exam, I assume that the textbooks wouldn't cut it, past papers MEH! I guess.... although they are essential, they probably won't give u anything for the M20 exam, cuz IB knows that we are using past papers, so they try and make exam harder and gives some hecka twisted question... that would make us cry in the examination. So for the IB math HL examination, I was thinkin…

I want to do my topic on continuous fractions and I find it very interesting, and I don't take SL maths. Most of the people I see doing this topic are past Math SL students. Is it ok if I do it on continued fractions or should I do my math hl ia on something else?

Hello everyone, I am currently doing 4 HL's but I need to drop one as soon as possible. Right now I am taking Math, Physics, Chem and Econ HL. I want to be an astrophysicist. I know that I need to keep Physics HL, I do not know about Math because even though I am strong at math, the teachers say that it will be very challenging for me and I will not be able to get the score I want, but if I drop to Math SL she said that the course would be kinda too easy for me not letting me develop my skills. I have to choose between Chem and Econ which one to drop. If I were to have Physics, math, and chem HL the teachers say I would pick the "death combo", and I can…

Hi I'm wondering if anybody can explain the reverse chain rule to me? I don't mean the whole U-Substitution thing, I mean the "shortcut" way. The formula is ∫f'(g(x)) · g'(x) dx = f(g(x)) + c. Also, we haven't learned calculus and trig or calculus and logs yet so please just use basic equations in any examples. Thank you!!!!

I have 2 weeks to submit my math practice IA. I decided to do something with predicting the stock price but I'm not able to figure how to go about it. I did some research and came across the Monte Carlo simulation. But I'm not sure it there is enough math in it because it just some basic statistics and probability. I then came across the Black Scholes model and it seems like there is enough math in it but I'm stuck on how to go about it. We haven't covered a lot of concepts in class yet so can someone give me some direction as to where to start and what I can do?

I want to do my IA on music (maybe modelling curve using chords) as I am a violinst and a struggling IB student. My interest in both maths HL Calculus and music has bought me till here to do a IA on it. But as of now I am lost about how to start and then go on. And how far is calculus involved and will the IA be a success. I have no idea how to look into this topic and what should I apply it to could I get any advice, resources or any procedures? Please clear my confussions.(much needed of surviving IB🙄)... Thank You!!

Hello everyone, I am working on my HL Math IA, and the final version is 12 pages of content. But, together with the references, the total page count is 14 pages. My question is, do references count towards the page count? Or is it still acceptable to have 12 pages of content, and 2 pages with listed references at the end? Thanks in advance!

My original IA topic for HL Math was optimizing the surface area of a ring, horn, and spindle torus given a fixed volume. My teacher told me that it was too simplistic, and that there was not enough original math in the paper, so I'm searching for a new topic. I came across the least squares regression, which is used for polynomial regressions and involves calculus. I was thinking about maybe applying this to some aspect of economics/markets/businesses. I found the Solow–Swan model as a potential starting point. Would it be a good to use something like this for my IA, and would it be complex enough for a HL Math IA? If not, how could I make it more original and …

Hey! So I have this issue about my HL Math IA references. I basically had to find a proof for the catenary shape, and I consulted this site over here: https://proofwiki.org/wiki/Equation_of_Catenary/Formulation_1/Proof It is proofwiki. But I know that generally wikipedia is not considered reliable. But in this case it is Mathematics, and it shows a proof which I went over a trillion times- and it is a correct, valid, reliable proof. A proof which I used. And I cannot find the same proof anywhere else. Should I cite this site? Will I lose points for it being from proofwiki? Or will noone care? Edit: Is this site even a part of wikipedia? How could I cit…

Hello everyone!! For my math IA, I decided to do some things related to the hanging chain problem. Long story short, there is a part where I need to create a general equation for a circle, given that it goes through 3 points A, B and C- whose coordinates are variable. I managed to do this without consulting any source whatsoever. I wrote everything in my own words, using my own method, and I'm seriously not sure where to find this exact method online/in a book somewhere. However, I still am 99% sure that someone, somewhere, somewhen has derived a general equation for a circle- given 3 points (that have variable coordinates). But as I said, I personally didn't …

I started my IA on the topic of Graph Theory. I tried to find the shortest distance path to go around 10 cities in Europe using the Prim's and Dijkstra's Algorithm. I have submitted my IA, and my math teacher told me that it is too easy for Math HL. Is there any suggestion that I can do to increase the complexity of my IA? Thanks!

I am moving to a new IB school in Canada during the middle of ninth grade. In my old school I did Advanced Algebra 2 in 9th grade. Do they have an option of continuing on that path or do I have to start at algebra 1? I also was doing French 2 at that school. Can I countinue that?

Hi everyone! I need help with my math IA topic. I am choosing between Bayes' Theorem use in real life OR measuring the distance from a star to the Sun (it is just different units, but you have to use simple SOHCAHTOA after). I doubt that it is going to score high because I am in HL and there is not much stuff for Criteria E. Are there any other topics you can recommend?

A sequence {un} is defined by u0 = 1, u1 = 2, un+1 = 3un – 2un–1 – 1 where n ∈Z. (a) Find u2, u3 and u4. My book says that U2=4, U3=8 and U4=16. And that based on those numbers the formula for n is 2^n+1, which makes sense but what I dont get is how would you verify this formula to satisfy the equation (un+1 = 3un – 2un–1 – 1)?

Hello everyone, So, currently, I'm a Math HL Y1 student and I'm really struggle in Math HL. My teacher us from Netherland and he don't really use question from IB curriculum, but mostly from his Dutch textbook. He usually teach us with worksheets he made up himself and the difficulty level is acceptable. I feel like I understand everything he taught because I'm having no problem working on the questions on the worksheet. However, I found that the questions on his quiz/test are very challenging and mostly I'm ended up with many Ds in test and quiz. My current overall grade is 75.9 (C) I'm considering dropping the course and move to SL, but I want to ask for some advic…

Hey everyone! So, after much procrastination and headache, I think I've finally arrived at a topic for my Math IA. I want to use polynomial regression to find the equation with the lowest r^2 value modelling a road in my city. I'll then use the equation to calculate the length of the road, and compare it to it's real value (Which I'll calculate with an app on my phone). However, I feel that this topic might be a bit too easy for a math IA. What do you guys think? Is there any thing similar to polynomial regression for sqrt(x) or ln(x) equations? I ask because there was another road I found that I feel looked like those equations, but I don't know how to model them. Th…

So I'm a straight-A student, who was able to achieve A's in HL 1 during my sophomore year of high school (10th grade). Now in my junior year, I'm in my second year of IB HL math, or HL 2. Unfortunately, I messed up first test in HL2, and got a C+ on the exam. I'm worried about the class this year because the current unit we're on has been a little confusing as well. It's the introduction to differential calculus (i.e. limits, derivatives, "first principles," etc.) and some of the questions in the textbook are throwing me off. How do you guys study for IB HL tests, and score better on these exams? Any sort of help or resource would be greatly appreciated, as I'd like…

Soo, I did my IA based on Newton's law of cooling (for differential equations) and, although in the beginning my teacher said it was ok, now he told me that it is too simple and that I should somehow expand on it. Does anyone have an idea on how I could make it a bit more complex? Or perhaps something that I could add to make it more diverse?

My maths teacher suggested the topic of finding the volume and surface area of a car using surface of revolution, and checking if it is optimize using calculus. What I did not understand is how exactly to use surface of revolution. I thought that the top of a car could act as a part of a semi-circle, but that would only be finding the volume of the top. Does anyone know how I can proceed? Thanks!

My teacher recently suggested a maths IA topic that I don't think anyone has ever done before. It is about finding the surface area and volume of car roofs, and investigating how the speed of the car is affected by air resistance. I could calculate the surface area using integration, but are there any other concepts that I could possible investigate this? For example, would going into drag coefficient be a good idea? I think it involves some calculus. Thanks for your help!
