For the last few months I've been volunteering at my daughter's high school to help the 12th graders review for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Maths Standard Level Exam in May 2015. In the process I produced these review notes that I thought could be useful to other students preparing for the exam as well. Review Notes for IB Maths Standard Level I'd be grateful if you email me with any mistakes you find so I can correct them. Best of luck on the upcoming exams.

Hi everyone! Luckily, I have a few days more to finish my first Maths portfolio. My god how the time flies - it was a few days ago when we got the assignments and now I'm sitting behind a desk with a cup of coffee... Anyways, back to my question: We've been given data regarding population at a specific period of time. There is a specific point in the assignment that goes something like this: A researcher suggests that the population, P at the time t can be modelled by P(t) = K / (1+Le-Mt) where K, L, and M are parameters It is my job to estimate and interpret K, L and M. I'm not quite the independent thinker in Maths and I'm stuck with this one. If anyone has tips h…

Hi everyone, I am given the portfolio assignment and thankfully it isn't that hard. But, I have trouble explaining it. By looking at the numbers, I've noticed that the numerator increases by 1 than the previous number. What I meant is, in the 3rd row the numerator is 6 and it increases by four and becomes 10 in the next one. Then, 10 increases by five and becomes 15 in the 5th row. However, it seems to me that my explanation is sort of awkward. So I decided to ask you guys how you would explain it. I am attaching the portfolio method. Thanks in advance for your help! =) 1.pdf

I have been assigned stellar numbers portfolio for this year, which is due in two-three weeks. I have been working on it for a while, and I have figure most of it out. The only thing I'm stumped on is the star numbers formula relating to terms of n. I have got the formula which works but I have no idea what to do to get the formula. Any help given would be appreciated.

Ok so I received the portfolio gold medal heights it's due to 10 days from today. It is actually all the heights(cm) achieved by the gold medalists of high jump from 1932 to 1980. I have to define all variables and sketch them on a graph. Now here comes the hard part - 1940 and 1944 no olympic games were held. 1)Should I include those 2 on the graph or no? 2) They ask me to define all variables but I have no clue about what variables they are speaking about? 3) The function(using a trend line) of the graph seems a bit hard to choose. Should I be leaded by the value of R squared( correletion coefficient)? I mean the closer the function is to one - pick that function! I a…

Hey all, I got the new SL Type II IA for 2012 and 2013 and I found that I need to graph a Sine Regression function against a set of data to test it. For my past IA's I have found some way to use excel to graph by data and regression fits... however I am having some serious trouble figuring out how to plot a sine regression against my data. I ask this because I have already done all the math on my TI-84 Plus. I am trying to figure out how to plot the same graph the TI does when you go to STAT -> CALC -> SinReg L1,L2,Y1. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this in excel or some other graphing package? Thanks, -Noxen Also, I would prefer and excel solution if any…

I dont know how to do it, please help. I have seen the text book and it said use normalcdf...but apparently thats when you given the mean...how do i do the opposite? Thanks alot. In this exploration, I want to see how mathematics is used to "predict" price movements by financial traders. This is very interesting to me as I want a career in Finance. Furthermore, I want to explore particular events such as the fall of the Lehman Brothers etc. and view correlations between stock valuation, output and market volatility. I also aim to find out what sort of correlations there are in particular stocks. I will use technical analysis (stats) on a particular stock index to find these price trends. The majority of the maths required in financial markets & trading is probability, statistics & stochastic calculus. The Black-Scholes equation (alth…

Hey guys, I have a Math IA due on Sunday December 15, which is about 9 days from now. I want to do my topic on the golden ratio because firstly, I'm genuinely interested in it, and secondly, it's extremely risky to change topics at such a late stage. I know some of you will scold me for procrastinating on it but believe me I've legitimately been working on it. However, I'm having trouble finding an original idea based on the golden ratio. I did an introduction where I introduced it and such but I'm having trouble with how to proceed. I know it's supposed to be an exploration on a real-life thing because I looked at past IAs; even my teacher said that my topic is good but…

I decided to go all out on this exploration (as IB calls it). I didn't feel like doing an SL topic as I wanted a high mark and going above and beyond the syllabus seemed the only way I could have gotten that. I decided to do my IA on: Estimating the Gaussian Integral using Riemann Sums and Taylor/MacLaurin Series. I programmed my own program (using VB.net) to calculate the Gaussian integral (to a significant degree of accuracy - 25 decimal places). I showed personal engagement, and the math was well above what was expected. I even derived the power series and the Taylor series in order for my peers to understand what I did. I ended up getting a 11/20. Discussing my IA wit…

Hello everyone I am gonna be an IB student next year. I know IB HL maths is extremley challenging since I have some friends of mine who have done it and have struggled for 2 years. Considering the fact that I am in core mathematics in IGCSE, students usually do maths studies instead. But, due to our limited numbers in school, our maths co-ordinator is allowing some of us to join SL maths. I was wondering if any of you out there have done it?? and do you recommend it or studies better? I can accept a few challenges and can definitley work hard in order to achieve my goals, however i am really interested in your guys's opinions. Thank you

Hi for my math exploration I'm hoping to find a function that accurately represents the growing population of China. So far I've fitted linear and an exponential curve onto my data and gotten the equation. However I believe that a logistic curve would be the ideal equation but I'm currently using Logger Pro and I have no idea how to fit a logistic curve onto my data. Any help would be very appreciated as this exploration is due very soon!

Hey all, Started IB two days ago...hope my motivation keeps up for the duration of the year. Except for one subject. You see, before I had considered IB last year, I was (and am still) quite bad at Maths. This is because the subject was unheard of in my old primary school in the middle of nowhere, and that next year when I started high school the Maths was such a radical change that I failed to do the homework and sunk lower until last year, few years later, I chose an alternative (applied) Math class, which touched on topics briefly and easily, "dipping" with small tests. Suffice to say I learned hardly anything. I am fine in other subjects, which is why I chose IB. I ha…

Hello there! So I've been struggling with studying for this class, and it's been driving me nuts! You see, I took this class last year, but I had my schedule a little too packed and I really neglected the homework and such. Needless to say, I got a less than satisfactory grade on the final exam. So this year, I'm retaking it. Every day, or as many consecutive days and I can manage up to the date of the test, I'm going to post a math question with a worked example, or as worked as I can get it, asking for assistance. This way, if I get the answer correct, it can help anyone else out there struggling, and if I don't, someone else can hopefully provide insight? I also encou…

Hi, I'm writing the SL Math exam (as many of you probably are) on May 3rd and 4th. My question is - how important is this math mark for university? I'm a particularly weak math student, but my IA marks have been overall decent (level 5). I want a 6 or 7, but I'm never too confident despite studying. Do universities still accept students who don't have an amazing math mark? Like a 4 or 5, for example. Also, for people who have done the SL Math exam in previous years, how hard was it? Thanks!

Here are some links to videos that I've put up on Youtube in order to help students prepare for their IB Math SL exams. Hi, I've just finished my first year of IB and i'm finding most of the subjects i'm taking okay, but maths SL is a real struggle for me. I understand the concepts when they are taught in class, but find the leap from the questions we do in class to the questions in the exams HUGE. I've talked to my teacher but she doesn't seem to think she can do anything else for me other then teach me what she has. Although the syllabus makes no mention of it, several of the textbooks I use (Haese & Haese, for example) teach integration by substitution. I sort-of understand it, but if I'm to learn it for the exam (ahhh can't believe it's less than a week!!!) I'll need quite a bit of practice, as I'm kind-of hopeless with these things otherwise. So does anybody know if there'll be questions which require solutions found through substitution? Despite a lack of mention in the syllabus, it's not exactly specific about it one way or the other!

I've been reading around here for the past few days and the general opinion tends to be that this years Paper 1 was much easier compared to previous years whilst the Paper 2 was ridiculously difficult. A lot of people seem to be stressed/worried regarding their grade for this course, and i'm no different. With the amount of studying I did I was aiming for a 7. However, after completing Paper 2, I am now concerned regarding my chances of achieving a 6. I was wondering what people think the grade boundaries will be for this session?
