So I am trying to get my math IA done this summer but am having a hard time choosing a topic that I like. I am really interested in film and cinematography and would like to incorporate it in my math IA but have found nothing on math ia topics that involved film from past math IA topics. I decided that I would come up with my own math IA exploration that has not been done before. My topic/question is "Does movies/films that use the Fibonacci sequence and Golden Ratio make high profits compared to movies that don't?" Is this a good idea for a math IA topic? Could I make it better? Are there any other math IA topics that involve film or cinematography? Is there other ways I…

Hi guys! I need help in my maths IA! Are we supposed to prove something in our IA or is it somewhat of a general discussion? I'm really confused... I have these topics in mind: astronomy, human rights and law, abacus, coding, optical illusion, anime and robotics, barcodes, music and also the collins equation (abundance of Katherine's) by John green. which one is best in terms of research content and which one seems more interesting in a mathematical sort of way??

Hi I'm in Maths SL and I am trying to find a reasonable object where I can find the volume of revolution and surface area for my IA. Many are doing a vase or a can but I'm hesitant about doing those objects because I need a realistic reason to why I need to find the volume so I can get some personal engagement marks. (For example, if I do a vase its not like I need to fill the water all the way up to the top). So if maybe any of you guys can think of a good object to investigate, PLS help ! Thank you <3

I need help deciding what math formulas to use for my math IA topic: Is there a correlation between the price of makeup and the size of makeup? I'm thinking linear regression, Pearson's correlation coefficient, but I still need one more equation but would prefer more than one. Can I pull geometry equations for finding the volume of makeup?

So I have been thinking of using correlation in my math IA. I want to look at the relationship between the amount of likes on a picture on instragram and the time it has been posted using datas from celebrities. Do you think this would work? and do you think I can make other analytical exploration about it?

Ok, someone just posted a petition of change.org for the Math SL grade boundaries, and I must say, its spreading very fast. The reason why I'm telling you to sign is because the same thing happened in May 2016 for Physics. If we manage to amass more than 10 k signatures, we can get response from Dr. Siva Kumari just like May 2016!!!! Although the boundaries are dependent on performance, it can at least force the exams to be manageable in the timeframe of 1.5 hours. https://www.change.org/p/richard-penrose-lower-math-sl-tz1-and-tz2-grade-boundaries

I really had some personal issues and they came between my studies, Where i wasn't able to pay much attention to math. I'm generally not good at math at all. I know for a fact that IA is 20% of the final mark followed by 40% for paper one and 40% for paper 2. You see I did a good math IA i got like a 16 but I'm sure the moderator would only take it down once corrected so lets say I get 13-14 in my IA... I had paper one exam today and it was a disaster for me.. I was wondering how much total mark paper 1 or paper 2 Do i need for a 2/7 or 3/7.. How is it all even calculated..

Can this work and is it too easy? PLEASE HELP ME!!

I am having trouble finding a correlation between the value of the stock market and the terrorist attacks for my math IA., and I am starting to wonder whether I should keep this topic or change it entirely since if there is no correlation it isn't possible though there is supposed to be one. So I would like to know if there is a website at which I could find data better suitable for use. Thanks

Hey there, With less than 2 weeks to the math exam, do you guys have any suggestions for math prep? I need to get a 6 in math, and I have the most trouble with paper 2, and some calculus, and I've been doing past papers but I get a bit tripped up with the questions. I feel that just doing past papers is a bit inefficient, do you guys have any suggestions? Thanks!

Hey guys. It’s my first year of DP. I’ve gotten an overall score of 6 in my previous semester, and I seemed to be surviving all right. But in the past few tests I took, I got a 2 and a 3. It felt like I understood the concepts properly and I didn’t have that much of an issue answering the homework and past exam questions that my teacher prepares before tests. She also seemed concerned about my grades. I’ve spoken to her, and she said that I would just have to keep on doing more work. There is only a few months before the end of the first year. I don’t understand why I’m struggling so much all the sudden, and dropping to studies now would require a lot of catchup…

Hey I got a 15/20 on the math IA, I am confused because other IB teachers said my IA was around a 18/20. I am concerned because what if my IA does not get selected as an example and it remains a 15. My teacher does not really like me, so I think it is an unfair grade. Additionally, how hard would it be for me to get a 7 on the IB test?

Hi there! So I've been wondering for a while now- should I drop from Math SL to Math Studies? I'm currently averaging a 6 in Math SL, but I feel like with the steady increase of work I might not be able to cope up with it and fear that my grade might drop significantly (I already scored a 4 on a test that we did recently...) . I want to study Politics/International Relations/History/Economics at uni (undecided major- I'll probably end up double majoring) so really, do I need Math SL (I ask this because Econ is one of my major options) ?? Please help!

Alright, so this math exploration is truly killing me. I literally have no idea what to write about and have resorted to the most basic thing i can think of, but the problem is that it is too basic. Nevertheless, i still want to keep the idea but want some help broadening what things i can explore. The idea i had was to measure the sides of a couple of corners in a number of rooms and use the cosine theorem to find the angle of said sides and basically prove how the sides aren't 90 degrees and how the architects that made the building weren't very precise. I know the idea is very basic and isn't really that good but i really just want to have an exploration at this point.…

So i'm thinking about doing my Maths IA on how the wingspan of a paper plane affects its flight. I would be measuring it by constructing an experiment with paper planes with a small, medium and large wingspan as well as having planes made of pieces of paper with different densities and would then throw them all consistently with possibly the use of a contraption that I would have to make so that it is a fair test. Although I'm not sure if there would be enough maths for me to get a good grade. If you have any advice, it would be appreciated

Hey everyone! Please help a junior decide which math course to take senior year. I'm not a diploma candidate, but taking 2 HLs next year and 1-2 SLs. Currently taking IB Math SL I, thinking about SL II next year, but my current math teacher said that if not pursuing the diploma - take AP calc AB instead. Pros for AP: * in US, more likely to get college credit * don't have to do an IA (but I've never done this before, so I don't know how tough it is). Pros for IB: * I'm told that I won't go as far into calc concepts as I would with AP calc (I don't like math, so this is a plus!), but I'm not sure if it's worth the trade off of the work required …

Hi, I have a couple of very rough ideas (or really, just topics) for my Maths IA, but I don't know if any of them will work. Also, if you have any suggestions in the areas listed below, for how to turn them into a good maths IA (regardless of what I've written beside the bolded word) that'd would be MUCH appreciated. Dance: I was thinking maybe investigating whether an infinite pirouette is possible, like the angle the bent leg needs to be at, the angle the other leg pushes off of, arm position and force/power of pushing off? Or looking into the maths of a leap (grand jete), maybe area under the curve? Drawing: I really enjoy drawing, and I was hop…

Hey all! This post is about my Maths SL IA, which I handed in incomplete (final submission). So due to various reasons, I was unable to finish my Maths IA and had to submit an incomplete version to my teacher, who put a very firm deadline. It was only around 8-9 pages and lacked a couple of the marking criterias (evaluation, etc) because I was finding my topic too difficult (something I realized quite late). The IA is hopeless now and I am left hoping to do well on the exam for a good grade. My aim is to get at least a 6 if not a 7. I know that the IA counts for 20% of our grade, but I am pretty confident in getting 80-90% for P1 and P2. I wanted to know how mu…

So while thinking of an IA topic(TL;DR at the bottom), I ended up going with something related to video games, loot chests to be more precise(In League of Legends). I'll be focusing on the skins that these chests can give to the players and the rerolling system. Basically, if you have three skin shards you can reroll them into a random permanent skins shards. Note that all skin shards have a value attached to them, as well as the final skin itself. You can also disenchant these skin shards to obtain orange essence that is a fixed percentage of the crafting value. I might try to average the amount of RP (paid in-game currency for cosmetics) to equal the orange essence(Can …

So recently I just received feedback from my teacher regarding my firts draft for my Math IA. I got 2/6 for criteria E because apparently my IA didn't commensurate with the level of the syllabus. I found this rather surprising since previous SIR Model Math IA's have score very well in this criteria and in overall. My teacher said I need to demonstrate my level of understanding and knowledge by using differential equations in more depth..which is HL. So who is in the wrong here? My math regarding the model is correct. Will the IB moderate my IA up? And how do I talk about differential equations in more depth? I did some calculations with the equations to get the rate of ch…

I never thought I would come to this point but it's getting way too bad. I am doing absolutely horrible in my first semester and it's really killing me. I know this is long, and I'm really sorry, I just thought it would help to explain. So lets start off with my pre-high school years. Looking back at it now, it's crazy how everything changed. All until high school, I was considered the smartest in my grade. I was always social, had good grades, and participated in sports. I would get awards for top student and all balanced student. In my graduation of grade 8, I got two awards, Top male, and Student of the year. Obviously I expected high school, specifically the next…
