Hello, I have been really struggling to find an IA topic I am in math sl . My teacher tries to be helpful but he is an extremely busy man, I really want to do something on Sundials such as how sundials are made, I just don't know if this is a good IA topic I am very lost I know I want to do something with sundials but don't know exactly what. Maybe I could do something with the equation of time?

Hi everyone, I am doing my math IA right now. My teacher recommends 12 pages max for the math ia but I feel like im going to fall short because im cutting out repetitive calculations. What if my ia is only 10 pages?? is that okay?

I am a year 1 student and just covered 4 chapters in the book, but my teacher told us to do our IA already without telling us how to do it. So I just did my presentation before winter break about the Fibonacci Sequence and the teacher told me to change it since it's overdone. However, since we haven't covered much I was worried about my current level and what I can do for IA. Is there any Math IA topics to avoid other than the Golden Ratio? I was thinking of investigating the math in Islamic art because I am interested in photography and art. The other topic I'm contemplating is math in bridge building. Thank you!

IA rough drafts are due within the next few days, so, being the procrastinator I am, I just started my rough draft this past week. This is my first time writing an IA and my first time writing a math Paper. My paper is over the probabilities of different autoimmune diseases and evaluating a possible connection between autoimmune diseases (if you have 1, are you more likely to have another?). I am in severe need of assistance, so here is my intro: "While considering my own interests and experiences I realized the probabilities of my own life and conditions. I have an number of autoimmune diseases: type 1 diabetes, Celiac Disease, and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. There is …

Hi everyone, I've started thinking about what I'm going to write for my math IA and so far I have two ideas. First idea is: How feasible would a light sail be for transportation to Mars? I could talk about how much weight it could cary to Mars, how fast, how would it escape Earth's graviity... Second idea is: Is a flat Earth possible? I could talk about if it is even possible for a planet to form and be flat, how gravity would be different on a flat Earth, how would it orbit the Sun... I would just like a couple of opinions on whether or not these are good ideas and if one of these are good enough for me to start writing the IA. P.S. I still have almo…

I'm trying to come up with topic for my SL Math IA. I am particularly interested in looking into concepts related to the 4th Dimension and non-Euclidian geometry but I'm having trouble coming up with ways to add calculations into my IA. In particular, I wanted to look at the use of non-Euclidian geometry in certain modern art pieces. Any help and guidance is greatly appreciated!

I am thinking of doing ia math in trigonometry. I am interested in proving/remaking of a formula; Al Biruni's geodesy formula. The question is, is that proving one's formula is decent for math sl and will it be likely to score high score?

Hi there. I’m doing my draft math IA on the analyzing of classical music, specifically how many of selected certain aspects(raised sevenths, certain chord progressions, etc) should be present in a good song. I’m wondering what the variables are in this case(I’m using stats as the focused unit). I know that simply making tables and calculating the mean of lists is below the grade level. My teacher suggests using sound frequency, but that’s not the aim of my proposal. Any ideas?

So I am writing my math IA on magic squares and I just got my draft back from my teacher and I'm currently at a level 2 My problem is we have not been given any guidance on writing this exploration and the feedback I was given was vague with little suggestions for improvement. If anyone could give me some pointers on writing an exploration it would be greatly appreciated

Hello guys, I would like to ask you one thing: Is double-spacing and font 12 like a must for the IA in Maths SL, so that if you don't do it you get penalized? I'm asking because I have too many pages because I used double spacing, but with 1.15 spacing and font 11 I would be fine with pages. Thanks for answers

What up guys. Got a query regarding sig fig. Is it true that we follow 3 sig fig all through the math exam if the question isn't specify otherwise? Like no matter how the large or small the value is? For instance, assuming the calculated answer is 126702, the final answer must be 127000?

What up guys. Just got a question regarding the marking system for externals. Simply, I have answered a trigo question in paper 1 that was asking for me to find "tan (2x)" with "cos (x)" given in fraction form. Well..I used the tan (2x) formula to solve as shown here (the 3rd one) -> After answering the paper, I was checking my answers. Then I suddenly recalled "tan (2x)" formula isn't included in the SL syllabus. The markscheme only showed using " [sin (2x)] / [cos (2x)]" to solve the question, nothing related to the 3rd formula in the shown above. In fact, it was worth 6 points if I'm not mistaken. If ever I use the tan (2x) formula above…

Hello I am in IB Math Standard level and am looking for an IA topic that could correlate with sports. One idea I thought about was correlating the height and weight of NBA players to there success in the league. Is that a good topic idea ? If you guys could provide me with feedback or any other ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone! I am a DP2 student and our Math teacher has started talking about our IA. My main idea is to compare acceptance rates of for an example, top 100 colleges in the US for Econ (which I want to study) and then compare it to the median salaries graduates get from those unis. I want to see if there's any correlation between the two in order to figure out whether I should apply for highly selective schools. If the correlation is not that high, then it doesn't really make sense for me to apply to them as the return will be the same if I go to a moderately selective school. I would construct a regression line and everything. My main question is - is this too…

Hey guys, So I was looking around for an IA topic (of couse i am), and I found something that was interesting to me. I watched a Numberphile video on the sum of all natural numbers, which would be -1/12. I was wondering if you guys had any advice on this, like if it is a good idea to explore or not, if it is doable, etc. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am still a bit confused as to what exactly should we do for the IA, like do we have to prove something? Do we have to develop a new idea? I know we have to apply the math into a region, but could someone please give a little more detail? Thank you all so much!!

Hey guys, so my teacher told me that for my math IA, i have to have my text double-spaced, although this results in my IA being long 16 instead of 12 pages! Is that really necessary, or not? Also, she told me to improve on the reflections, but I don't quite understand how. How can you critically reflect on the maths that you have? Can you give me an example? Please anyone, give some advice. Thank you in advance.

Hi everyone! So I am currently having troubles with finding a topic for my Math IA I actually already have an idea and I also talked to my teacher but she said that I'd need more calculations because all I have right now is just data collection and some basic calculations like calculating mean etc. What I have right now is: I'll collect data from two restaurants (Number of customers from 11am-4pm) One of the restaurants offers buffet and the other one doesn't I can make graphs with the collected data then compare them If anyone has any ideas that can help me, feel free to do so Thanks

Roommate probability IA

Hey:) As I attend an international boarding school, students always share a room with someone from another region. (Europe, North America, Latin-America and the Caribbean, Africa, Middle East & Indian Subcontinent, Far East Asia. Grade 11 always share a room with a person in grade 12. One cannot get someone from your own region, and not twice the same. I am going to calculate the probability of every combination in the two years, for a person representing Europe. Options are for example: North America-Africa or Middle East &Indian Subcontinent and Latin-America and the Caribbean. I feel that just the calculations with independent probabilit…

Hi! My Maths SL IA is statistics/correlation based, where I see if theres a correlation between age and rankings given to the top 10 photos of a photography competition. I was thinking of excluding scattergraphs from my IA because constructing 1 graph each for my ten pics take up a lot of space. Plotting 2 pics on 1 graph is really messy too. 8/10 pics have no correlation, so including their scattergraphs seem kinda pointless. However, having a visual representation of my data will be nice, especially since I can do my line of best fit for the 2/10 that has correlations. i have chi square, pearsons and spearmans so far. Would excluding scattergraphs be detr…

Hi! The Maths teachers in our school said for SL IA's, we could base our IA's on statistics and use formulas like Pearson's and Spearman's and Chi-squared (not in the SL curriculum but is in Maths Studies). However, they said we have to explain the steps of each equation, as in like why do you need to multiply d^2 by 6 in Spearman's rank. Is this really necessary for a 7? If so, how would you get sources like this that explain how equations are derived? Thank you!

Hi guys! I really need an IA topic. I can make sure I have personal engagement with it. My only problem is that I don't know which one involves a lot of maths and not only statistics, but it still is doable at the same time for an SL student. I have tried two other topics but I can't find the right one for myself. Please do you have any suggestions(from the list of topics on the internet) that is actually doable. I know you think that any one can be done if you know how, but please can you tell me which would really score well with enough effort and commitment. I'm running out of time and I'm panicking a bit.

Hey guys! I'm looking for a math IA topic along the lines of medicine! I feel like the topic of the spread of infectious diseases is extremely overused and that maybe there could be a spin on it I could look at? Maybe somehow using statistics to find the most or least susceptible countries after findng the spread of infectious diseases? Also is there any calculations that could be done for some sort of bacteria immunization and how anti-biotics work to find out estimations of when antibiotics stop working for that bacteria? I would love to a medical math ia and any help is appreciated!

Hey guys, My draft for mathIA is due in 1 week, and I have the topic but I haven't written anything. The reason is I don't know what to write about. I know I will be writing on the martingale method, and I have written a java script which simulates this method for 1,000,000 rolls of roulette on the American (double 0) roulette board. I can choose the initial bet and how much money I have at the start. Should I just write my IA on debunking the betting method? Or find the optimum starting bet based on the total balance? Or should I make a new betting method and write the code for that and debunk my OWN betting method? which would be better for personal …

Hey guys, I'm currently doing my Maths IA on correlation and I was looking at samples from the IBO and from different places on the internet. People seem to always calculate what Pearson's correlation coefficient and averages are manually when they can do it on their graphical calculator and include a snapshot. I'm doing that but because everyone is doing it manually, I'm starting to wonder whether doing it on my calculator will get me marks in Criterion E: Use of Mathematics. Also, literally my whole IA is based on snapshots from my graphical calculator - will that get me marks?

Hey, So last year our school was unable to provide us with a Math SL teacher considering only three students took it. We were registered on Pamoja, which turned into a giant mess. Long story short, we wasted a whole year. This year we were finally provided with a teacher and I personally sought out a tutor. Do you think it's possible to finish two years worth of Math SL content before the exams in May? Any tips or advice I should keep in mind? Our math teacher suggested not worrying about the content we should have learnt last year and shouldn't try to do multiple topics at the same time, even in our own time. Is that good advice? Thanks in advance!

What would be some standard level mathematics to explore for scuba diving?
