So I keep getting 26+(5*2)+ (12*1.5) = 54 However, the answer is 42? I read the explanation and I don't understand why they divide 12/3?

I have to do my IA over the summer, and I have approximately a little less than a month to finish it. I have no clue what to do it on, any help? I know I have to choose something I'm interested in, but I don't know how to connect math to the few things I like. ex. reading, television, video games, food, death, candy, science. I really don't know what to do and would greatly appreciate any help/advice.

I have been seriously having issues trying to pick a topic for my Math IA and I have no idea where to start, my teacher told me to do it on something I am interested in.. so I chose swimming and i would like to do statistics but I have no idea what kinds of things I can do, can anyone help me know how to narrow it down to something more specific?

I am posting this because I really need your assistance and I would really appreciate if you could help me out (lately I've been getting no responses), I recently got my draft for my IA back with an estimated grade of 16 out of 20 and the comment that in order to improve my grade I should include more mathematics. In my essay I investigate the stability of different scenarios as well as model possible strategies. i also create my own scenario and solve it. I anybody aware of functions I can explore or similar topics with 'more mathematics'. I want to reiterate that I would really appreciate any suggestions and would encourage people to contact me if they need help chem …

Hey guys! I've been trying to work out a Maths IA and I have the idea of creating a dice/coin game and using binomial probability. But I can't seem to think of a game that would allow me to end with a good Internal Assessment. If anyone has any ideas of inspiration, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks

Sorry for the clickbait title... it had to be done. Could you all kindly spare a couple of minutes (literally) to check out this survey? It is only 6 multiple choice questions long and your responses will help a bunch. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfI7a2eF033SpYSbki5ngF19SD0O9l_eHSMbliQuQlWjm_G1g/viewform Cheers

So I tried working it out as this: 3n-2<450 3n<452 n<452/3 And now I'm stuck. I have no clue what to do. Another person solved the answer, but I have no clue where he got 15 2/3 from.

My class (SL) hasn't (and will not) cover Fourier Series/Transform, so I am learning this all on my own. Based on my studies, I have quite a good understanding of Fourier Series and Transform. I just have no clue what to do with it in my Math IA. I have seen examples of IA's where they prove the theory, but I want to go beyond that. Maybe even delve into its application in CT scans. (I didn't go into the musical applications as I am utterly confused with anything related to music). However, as I delved deeper between Fourier application in CT scans, Fourier Transform is just the overlapping theory of it. I am at wits end as to where my IA should go. Any thought…

Hi Everyone, So I had the idea for my maths IA to model my sleep cycle (an example is shown in the picture) to determine the average length of my individual cycle & try and determine the best points to wake/sleep. Any feedback/expansions on the topic would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi Everyone, For my Maths IA do you think that looking at some of the different predictive models explored used in tennis (e.g. O'Malley etc.) & applying them to past tournaments would be a feasible IA topic. I would then compare them based on accuracy and ease of use? Thanks in advance

Tips to Improve at Math

I'm entering my 2nd year at the IB in Sweden and I would be very grateful for tips, methods, guides or any of the sort that helped you to improve at Math. Any tips also to maintain motivation is also important to me. Or to "get into" math, as I was proficient in the subject when I was younger. It's the subject where I'm lacking and need to improve, as I want to study Economics in the UK, and of what I've Heard, University level Economics uses a lot of math and many Courses even need a high score in Math HL. Thanks for suggestions!

Hi! I'm doing my maths ia sl and have come across the idea of exploring several dimensions(4th, 5th,...), but some people are writing that this is kind of complex even for an HL student. Is this true? Also which branch of mathematics(geometry, algebra, statistics and probability, modelling,..) generally gains the best grades if anyone has that information? Thanks a lot

I need help choosing my IA topic. Honestly I am really lost right now and I don't know what nd how to do it. I have seen some examples and ideas but some seem way too simple and some seem way too hard. I want to do something on probability, but I think it would be way too simple to just do a probability problem. So i need help. How or where can I get ideas? And how do I know how to perform them (?)

Hi Everyone, I am currently in the process of completing my Maths IA and am a bit stuck on how to proceed. I initially wanted to look at modelling a tennis serve however, this soon became quite difficult as I do not do physics and was advised to stay away from looking at all the different forces (e.g. Magnus effect, drag) that impact the ball, making this idea quite hard. I then wanted to look at differences between male and female tennis serves by modelling some serves of professional tennis players however am not really sure whether the results I get from this will be significant at all. Finally, I also thought about videoing my own serve and comparing this with a …

So I did the May 2017 session and it just hit me that I don't think I wrote everything in three significant figures. I may have completely forgot to do so since I was stressing so much over the externals. Will they deduct a point for every single question that I forgot to write in 3 significant figures? That'll make me lose sooo much points and I'm so scared I fail.

Hey Everyone SO my math IA proposal is due tomorrow and i'm a little skeptic about it. This thing is just so hard. Anyways i got down to two major topics of either modelling or optimization I want to model the spread of malaria in my hometown. I understand i'm suppose to use SIR for this investigation but im also a little confused as on collecting the statistics as well as calculating. I also don't know how to structure it into a research question. My back-up plan is on optimization- to see how surface area of piece of land can be maximized. This is a bit more understandable but everyone at my school is thinking of it. Can i get some feedback on …

Hi everyone, it's my first post here, so hello! I know there's probably a million posts about this, but I wanted some feedback regarding some ideas I had for my math IA. I was thinking of doing something like medical tests and probability, and then looking at Bayes' theorem, but I'm concerned that maybe this topic has been done before and I'd have trouble making it 'my own', or maybe the maths wasn't challenging enough for SL maths? My backup idea is probably doing something related to secret santa and investigating how to ensure anonymity and no one gets their own name, so looking at permutations and probability or something like that, though this idea isn't r…

Hello! I have to decide on a math exploration topic but I'm not sure what I should do. I'm very confident in the binomial theorem, arithmetic and geometric sequences so doing something concerning this would be great. I know the rules are very strict for what others are allowed to say, but do you have any suggestions on things that are possible to investigate in these topics? Also do you have general tips and tricks that could help me with the math exploration? Thank you so much!!!

Hi Everyone! I am currently in the process of coming up with my maths IA topic and have recently been looking at the various applications of Bayes' Theorem. One of these applications is about filtering spam mail, by analysing common words that appear in them. I was wondering looking if looking further into Bayesian Spam filtering and possibly applying it to my own mailbox would be possible? I'm not really sure if this is feasible or not, but any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hello, I have to come up with an idea for my math IA topic proposal, and I'm having trouble coming up with something that I'm both interested, and has more extensive math in it. I genuinely really like math, and so I wan't to do something that's a little more complicated than a topic with a generic linear equation. My initial idea was to look for a correlation between the size (height / weight) of a volleyball player and the speed of their serve; however, again this only leads to a simple linear correlation, or no correlation at all, which is not the kind of idea that gets a 7. If anyone could help me come up with something, preferably including vectors…

MATH IA HELP

Hi, I was planning to do my math IA with a topic of "Golden ratio on logo design in relation to beauty". When I finished with my introduction and started to collect the data, it was so difficult for me to collect any data, since I needed to draw some circles and lines on the logos directly. Using common examples on internet, such as Apple, Pepsi, National Geographic, etc, might be plagiarism and it would not give me good score. Is it correct? So I planned to change my topic... but I really don't know which topic should I choose right now, after failed once... hahahaha First idea is "To find the relationship between height and shoe size using Cor…

Hello all! Freaking out a bit because my original maths IA topic didn't have any data that I could find on it, and we need to come back to school after the Easter break with a solid idea of what to do for our IA, as well as the data needed for it, as we will start writing it when we get back to school. Since I'm in New York right now, I was thinking about something to do with statistics or modelling of the New York subway. Any thoughts on what data in particular I should use of if this is a crap idea totally and I should just pick something else for my IA?

Hi there, My Maths IA is based on modelling infectious diseases with the SIR model. I have been reading exemplars online where the health parameters (gamma and beta/ rate recovery and rate of infection) are used for certain diseases but I can't see where they got their data from. Do you guys know where I can get these kind of data from? I've tried searching online for a while now but I can't seem to find anything... Thanks

Hi all! Over the Easter holidays I'm supposed to be collecting data for my maths IA, but I feel like the idea I have chosen does not involve enough mathematics. What I was thinking of doing was finding the probability of death in different everyday activities and converting that to micromorts (i.e. the one in a million chance of death per activity). But, I am not sure if after collecting this data there will be enough that I will be able to do with it mathematically, or that having probability as an IA topic is a bad idea. Would it be wise to change my topic completely whilst I still have the chance? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hello, We have to write up at least 1 -2 pages of our Math IA by Wednesday. I thought of using the Fibonacci numbers and how they are used in casinos for betting. I researched and it said that this, however, isn't good for the long term as it can cause a lot of money loss so I thought I'd use other types of number ( like the Lucas numbers etc) and compare them. However, I feel like it will be a very short topic and I won't be able to write 12 pages on it. Please help me build on this idea. Thank you!

Okay I'll cut to the chase. I'm not understanding ANYTHING in the trigonometry chapter of Maths SL, as much as I'd want to. I've tried to look at QuestionBank questions but I don't understand how to do them, I even tried watching a few videos but I'm still not understanding how to go about this chapter. Can anyone give me advice on how to start understanding this chapter, like any good textbooks/notes which explain the concepts or things I have to do to understand?
