So this new change from: Language A1 & Language A2 --> Language A: Literature, Language A: Literature and Language and Language A: Literature and Performance ... it's a bit confusing and I think especially confusing for people doing the new syllabus who aren't clear about what's going on in their own minds - and are now being extra-confused by seeing old content on this forum! So, read on and hopefully understand a bit more about what's going on... Quick Reference... 1. Background">Background 2. So what's happened to A2?">So what's happened to A2? 3. What's the difference between Lit&Lang and the old A1 course?">What's the difference between Lit&L…

Hello IBsurvival! first post, yay I am taking Swedish A L&L(I assume this goes under the A1 forums), and our first real IB assignment is to do a Further Oral Activity. This seemingly is a very creative assignment, which I think is making it difficult. Our teacher gave us 5 headlines which in some way had to do with Language history in Sweden, as that is the country we are from and Swedish is language we are studying. Since the syllabus is the same for every language it does not matter at all in which language you have done it. Anyway, me and two of my classmates have decided to research and lecture about the relation between language and power for an indigenous people…

Hey everyone, I'm currently in my first year of the IB and one of my HL courses is English L/L. Despite having hated english last year, I am absolutely in love with it this year. I have an absolutely fabulous teacher who has really motivated me into wanting to do well (he also convinced me to switch it up to HL (rather than SL)). Of course I've heard all of the (probably true) rumours about it being incredibly difficult to achieve a 7 at HL. At the moment, I often find myself wanting to do something to "study" for english but having no idea what to do. Anyone here who's taken/is taking HL english and is achieving high marks? What do you do (unless you happen to be…

Before going onto the easter break, my teacher told me that if i was aiming for 18+ marks on my paper 2, i had to learn quotes and be able to use them in nearly every single paragraph. I have decided to open this thread so that all of us can share our quotes, which we can then gather and learn em. I'm planning to update this thread as i get quotes. Don't be shy to share whatever you have as long as it is related to the topic.

Hello Everyone! I'm really having a real problem with my Paper2. The books I'm studying are The Whale Rider and the Poems of Pablo Neruda, none of which appear in any study website . The problem I'm having here is that I never know how to incorporate both the context and the stylistic devices to answer the prompt question. That is my weak point. I consulted my teacher. But she was of no use. She said it's 'skills' and would not advise me further on how to achieve this so-called 'skill' she's talking about. I'm good at analysing literary features and all the devices the author use as well as their effects. However, I don't know how to use it to answer questions like "…

Hello, I just finished the paper 1 for English A HL (text comparison). I wrote about question 2(text C and D) but only after submitting did I realize that I referred to the two texts in question 2 as text A and B throughout my whole analysis. I’m extremely scared now that the examiners will mark my paper based on it being text A and B or penalize me in any way. However, I did write question 2 at the box on the left hand column of the response paper. If there’s any English A HL examiners or someone who have made this mistake or anyone who knows about this, PLEASE tell me if the examiners will mark it based on me writing question 2 on the box or based on me mentioning text …

So were taking 1984 in my English SL class, and we are required to do an IA on it. We haven't really analyzed it deeply, so we only know about the things that are obvious in the book. Our IA should be creative, like a letter to Big Brother or posters, and it should be about 900-1200 words long. Any ideas? What did you guys do for your IAs?

Hey guys, I am doing A streetcar named desire in English Language and Literature and my teacher has set me with some homwork which I am struggling with. This is what she gave me: Tennessee Williams assigns color imagery to many of the characters in the play "A Streetcar Named Desire." Describe how his use of this literary device adds depth to the character development using specific examples from the text. Does anyone have an idea? I need a quick answer! Thanks

Hello! I am going to write my first written task 2 very soon and was hoping I could get some advice. I have decided to write about Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which is one of the works we have studied and the one I liked the most. I am thinking about doing question 3) How and why is a social group represented in a particular way? Here I could discuss how the social group of Kambili (the main character), which is rich and catholic, compares to the social group of her Grandfather and Aunt, which is more focused on the old Gods of Nigeria and are not very rich. Do you think this is a good idea? Am I on the right track?

Just a short introduction: I am: 10th grader, German, living in England, going to do the IB next year. *Note: LangLit = abbreviation for 'Language and Literature' Lit = abbreviation for 'Literature' I already have an exact idea of all the courses I want to do in the IB (HL: Maths, Physics, English A course and SL: German A LangLit, Chemistry, Economics). The only uncertainties I have are relating to the choice of my language course choices. I am 100% sure that I will do the 'German A Language and Literature' as this is the only German course my school offers (Please don't understand me wrongly, I do appreciate the fact that they actually give us this opportunit…

Hey IBSurvival! So we meet again, and now I have my mocks in just over a month. I have started revising Math, Chemistry, Physics, and Economics. However, I'm a little confused as to where to start studying for English SL Lang and Lit. Our mock will be a paper 1 style exam (Possibly paper 2 as well, but hopefully not.. ). I have a list of literary devices and a resource on how to structure the Essay (paragraph by paragraph), but I feel like I do not have that good of a command over language, especially when I'm under stress of timed conditions. The thesaurus is my best friend, and I won't be able to use it . I'm more of a 'math person' so my sentence structure and wor…

Hello guys! At our school, they want us to begin to come up with Extended Essay ideas now. I really have no idea what I want to write about (I don't even know what subject I want to do it on tbh). Either way, as of right now, english is my favourite subject. I'm absolutely in love with Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and I would love to explore it in my Extended Essay (of course I would have to find a topic question first). Something I read that made me a bit worried was that "all of the things to say about Alice in Wonderland have already been said". I was just wondering if this would be an issue? Contrary, I've also heard people say that you really don't…

Hey guys I have recently switched my Language B (which I sucked in very much) to my second mother tongue German A L&L, however, to my surprise, I noticed that the language part of the syllabus was 100% overlapping with my English L&L course content, thus there was literally no need to revise anything from the so dreaded amount of workload I expected to catch up and work through so hardly. The stuff we cover in my German A course are just pretty much a revision of what we were doing in my English A course, thus I was even thinking of translating my Written Tasks into German and submitting them(which I ofc did NOT do). So can I ask you fellow 2013 pals who are study…

I recently got a written task idea on the viral video "Slap Her", and my teacher is a polyglot so we enjoyed watching the video together and after hearing my ideas for it he told me to go ahead and write up an outline. I was talking to my friend about this and she mentioned that you can only do your written tasks on english-based texts. Now I'm confused and I'm wondering if my teacher overlooked the verbal language aspect (there were English subtitles) and whether it's actually possible for me to do my critical response on that video. Here's the link: “Slap her": children's reactions - YouTube. To be clearer I indeed do English L&L HL

Hey guys, Our teacher is telling us to start writing written tasks and I want to write mine about Power and Privilege- "2) Which social groups are marginalized, excluded or silenced within the text?" with the topic of cultural appropriation when it comes to cornrows being seen as a "fresh, new trend" when white celebrities have that particular hairstyle. Do you think this is a good topic? My doubts have to do with the fact that the text I will be using are articles from magazines or beauty websites... I keep seeing people writing about Shakespeare and so forth, I'm starting to think that my topic/text won't be taken seriously if its from glamour.com Thanks!

I have my IOP coming up in the next couple of weeks and I'm still pretty clueless as to what I want to do. I've been thinking about making a painting that represents Holden's character and just showing a sped up video to my class and stopping it at certain points to talk about what's in it and throw in some quotes from the book, but I don't know if it's a good idea and will end up being a good presentation.

Hey guys, I'm decently well-versed with both English and Chinese literature, therefore naturally I thought about doing a comparative EE in category 2 (a translated Chinese text, and an English text). However, this has never been done before in my school. I am, however, very passionate about these texts. If anyone has done one or is in the process of doing one, I'd appreciate any enlightenment with regards to this! Thank you so much! :))

Hey guys, I am a 2021 nov grad, and cause of corona, everything is stuffed. I just completed my first exams, and things are not looking good. I got a 50% for chem sl and a 5/40 for english hl paper 1- apparently because i compared instead of individually analyzing. Anyway, I have to decided to dedicate my entire life to studying for my remaining time in IB. I got a chem tutor, and he recommend that I switch my Chem Sl to Chem Hl, because apparently English Hl is much much much harder to get a 6 or 7 in the long term game! But for english Hl, its seems like I barely need to put work in and I just feel like whatever I do I cant get top marks. …

hi my class has read the novel 'a scanner darkly' and now must write a commentary on a chosen 40 line passage in the book. if anyone has ever read the book, what would you suggest as being an appropriate passage that effectively conveys the use of language and effect (in terms of language issues such as register, perspective, meaning rather than what my teacher calls 'lame' i.e. alliteration, metaphor etc.). Thanks a lot

English A L&L SL Hi, we have our WT and FOA due in a couple of weeks. I have decided to write about Language and Power. I was thinking of analyzing a speech for my WT and write in form of a article, and later presenting it to the class for the FOA. I am considering either analyzing Obamas victory speech in the 2012 elections or possibly making up what could have been Romneys victory speech if he would have won. I would like to know what you thing, i welcome all type of critic, positive or negative. I would like to know which topic you think fits the WT criteria/approach the best. How should i approach the topic and how i can improve? I thank you in beforehand.

I'm having extreme difficulties in coming up with an IOP topic. I'm doing The Merchant of Venice, but any idea I come up with can't be supported or is just plain dumb. I've been reading countless other threads on this, and I found someone who said you can look at characters through a framework. His example was looking at Shylocke as a marxist; is something like this a good topic? I'd imagine you'd be able to find some evidence to support it but it would have to be taken out of context since Shakespeare couldn't possibly have been trying to achieve this. How do you choose a good topic? What am I supposed to be looking for?

As part of the new course, there is a written task for the HL students: It is a critical response, answering one of 6 questions: Eg. Which social groups are marginalized, excluded or silenced within the text? A text we studied that i would like to analyse is Heart of Darkness, since the natives are excluded. I just don't know how to structure the essay, never done one before. Isn't there any model answer ? or similar structure essay available?

Hey, so I have an FOA in 2 days, and I was was wondering whether we could use a paper with some written material on it for the FOA? I have a lot of stuff that i need to say exactly like it is, and it's kind of difficult to remember everything as it is. There was an earlier post, i think, that said that using cue cards will get you marked down harshly, so I'm a bit confused. If someone could clarify this within the next 2 days, I'd be greatly appreciative. Cheers.
