Hi, I need to write a written assignment for the external assessment which is the 1500 word literary essay on a work studied in part1. I'm writing my essay on Death and the Maiden by Ariel Dorfman. My guiding question for the essay is "How does Dorfman create conflict between Paulina & Gerardo through the use of dramatic dialogue and how is it resolved?" I plan to constrain it to act 1 scene 1 while linking it to other parts of the play. Do you think that this is an appropriate topic? And I'm not sure about the structure of the essay. What do I start writing with? Please help ASAP!! Thanks

For the FOA that we are supposed to do in part 1, I chose to analyse a speech (ich bin ein berliner). I thought about this for a while since analytical skills aren't tested specifically in the FOA and I decided that it DID in fact satisfy one of the part 1 learning outcomes - "analyse how language and meaning shape the audience and purpose". My focus would be the historical and social context of the time period in which the speech was delivered and how it shapes the overall meaning of the text. When I asked my teacher if this could be a suitable topic for the FOA, she told me that analytical skills were assessed in Paper 1 and that I would only score 15 marks for th…

Hey y'all I have my IOP due in around 2 weeks and I've barely done anything because I keep confusing myself about what to do. We have looked at a lot of texts in class surrounding themes of class distinction (these include the Dolls House by Katherine Mansfield, The Dead by James Joyce and Opportunity by Charlotte Grimshaw). I want to do my IOP surrounding the characters and their perceptions of class distinction and how it affects their behaviour, but I'm worried there's not enough depth in that. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what kind of ideas I could explore in the realm of the theme of class distinction. I'm not too worried about the creati…

Hi everybody! Im planning start doing IB Diploma next year and have stumbled upon a road block which is deciding between Language literature and Literature. Although English is not my mother tounge, I am quite confident in my English profiency and love literature, English language and creative writing. To my knowledge, the main difference between these 2 subjects is that Literature solely focuses on the analysis of books, poems, short stories, plays, or anything academical. While lang lit is more broad, practical(in terms of real life usage) and focuses on the analysis of mediums such as song lyrics, films, social media, adverts and what not. Both soun…

FOA2 Ideas

Can anybody who's already done their FOA2 just share what they did here? I need some inspiration..... I was thinking something along the lines of the language of lyrics in pop songs but that feels really cliche. Also, our teacher allowed us to do the first FOA with a partner. I really want to work with my FOA1 partner for this second one too- is that allowed?

I have recently discovered that creative writing is a part of the Lang lit course. Could someone tell me what is actually done in creative writing? What kind of creative writing do you do? Poems? Short stories? Scripts? writing adverts? or all of them?

Hi There! I have my English IOC in just under 4 weeks. I am really nervous and I feel so unprepared! In my first IB year I did the Handmaid's tale and some poetry by Wilfred Owen for the IOC. I feel I like I know these texts quite well, however I have't even looked at the Handmaid's tale since last year! Now my class has a new teacher who has no experience with the IB and we have started reading the Crucible verrrryyyy slowly as our final text but we have only just reached act 2. I am so nervous as my teacher really seems very calm about the whole thing but she can't answer a single question about any of the IB assessments without looking in her little guide boo…

My focus is on the leaning outcome about analysing themes and moral and ethical values. Any ideas how I should achieve that through a diary?

I have chosen English A: Language and Literature(HL) and I'm going to write my WT1 based on part 3/4 of the IB course. And I have a few questions regarding this: Is dialogue as a text type allowed? I, actually plan to write a dialogue between two fictional characters. One of my characters would be a modern day protagonist (either from a book or a movie) and the other would be from a literary text (Miss Julie or Nora from 'A Doll's House'. I thought this topic would enable me to display the historical, cultural, psychological differences of between the women of today and of the 1870s. I was wondering if such a WT1 would be acceptable by the IB. And if it isn't ac…

Hi, does anyone have any tips for preparing for the paper 2 exam? I've been compiling quotes so far but there are just so many quotes I feel would be useful and I don't think I can remember all of them. I remember the plot points and things like that, but for some quotes I'm having trouble analysing them (finding specific literary features). Any tips would be appreciated!!

Stylistic features make up a big chunk of the final grade in the English L&L Paper 2. However, we don't get the texts when we are doing the exam. I feel like stylistic features are very specific and could only be applied to extracts and not whole books (try talking about a simile when you need to discuss the meaning of a book). I have Antigone and Pride and Prejudice as my assigned books. Any advice on how to incorporate stylistic features and which ones take note of?

Hi everyone. I'm currently working on my WT1 and I'm writing a tabloid article, which generally requires photographs. I wanted to use stills from the film based on the book I'm writing it on, but I found out some (most) of them have some sort of copyright license. My question is: can I still use these stills or is there a way to go around it?

Hi, I started the IB this year when I moved rob england and took English A, however the only one that our school offers is the literature. The problem is that I have never done any literature (in my native language or English) or literary analysis. For the works in translation this was ok and I managed to get by, however as we have started to analyse The Great Gatasby and Heart of Darkness I find myself completely lost. We were supposed to analyse a section of text paper 1 style however I don’t even know where to start or how to write it. I don’t really know any literary devices or what they to to the meaning to the text. Could anyone advise me on what to do, are th…

I wanted to know if there is a specific structure you have to follow for this prescribed question “How could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers?” I'm also having trouble coming up with ideas relevant to the select interpreter. Thank you to anyone who helps : )

Greeting from Taiwan! Hello, I am currently working on my Egnlish A Lan and Lit written task 2. I choose the prescribed question "How does the text conform to, or deviate from, the conventions of a particular genre and for what purpose? " and I focus my response on arguing The Great Gatsby displays the characteristic of both modernistic and romantic novel. These are my concerns: 1. Are romanticism and modernism defined as two literary genres (sub-genres are fine as well) by IB definition? 2. Does my content answer the prescribed question? Thank you for your help!!!

I have to write the written task for my English A:Language and Literature course. I have chosen a topic from Part 1 of the course, Language and Power. I thought about taking the perspective of a political leader who talks about the perils of poverty and methods to alleviate it. My source is ttps://www.brookings.edu/research/what-are-the-presidential-candidates-saying-about-poverty-and-opportunity/ Now, my question is whether this is an appropriate source for the topic. EDIT- This could also be from part 2 of the English Language and Literature Course and more specifically from 'Language and presentation of speeches and campaigns'.

Hey everyone! So for my upcomming IOP in 2 weeks, I am planning to do one on Wide Sargasso Sea. So far I managed to form a thesis of "The author Jean Rhys presents the theme of Alienation through exclusion of the characters in the novel based on race, wealth and status, appearance and shared cultural symbols and values." I chose this thesis primarily after going through interrelationships between the characters of the novel. Primarily, these factors in my thesis are brought through: poverty, appearance (creole). Alienation that leads to destructive acts in the novel - Anette marries mr mason driven by exclusion in society which leads to the…

Hey hey I am new here. I started IB program in Norway and I am in DP2 so I am taking things slow but learning to keep my own pace with studying! Of course along the way I am learning about time management and learning new skills. Anyhow, I am currently struck with a new assignment from my English A teacher. He has split the class into groups of three and wants us to have a further oral activity in these groups. Apparently, he will allow class participation although the students that are presenting will be the only ones assessed. Most of the texts that we have studied for the first two months are about the cultural context of the text and the guide states that the gro…

Hi guys, I'm in English A Lang Lit SL and I'm about to write my written task 1. So I'm decided to write an opinion column, yet for example if I choose to do something with feminism, which points are we supposed to include? Is the opinion column a critique of the stimulus material? Is it opinion on the chosen specific issue in general supported with facts? I'm just confused about how you can show your knowledge and understanding of a topic studied for Part 2, for example. Thanks in advance for responses.

I'm thinking about doing something around the topic of translation errors and how they affect context, but I don't know how to present it. If anyone can suggest improvements, that would be great.

Hey guys. My school's final FOA is due this Tuesday, and I have planned to base it around something like 'representation of Chinese people in western media and films'. I'll be examining the various depictions of Chinese people and talk about some common stereotypes/bias, and explain how language is used for such purposes. I heard from my teacher that the FOA cannot talk about the depictions in general, but that it needs to be focused on one particular text (book, tv series, movies, pictures, etc). Can anyone here suggest me some text in which Chinese peoples are depicted in an interesting, controversial or in any particular manner? Thanks.
