Hey everyone, I'm currently in my first year of the IB and one of my HL courses is English L/L. Despite having hated english last year, I am absolutely in love with it this year. I have an absolutely fabulous teacher who has really motivated me into wanting to do well (he also convinced me to switch it up to HL (rather than SL)). Of course I've heard all of the (probably true) rumours about it being incredibly difficult to achieve a 7 at HL. At the moment, I often find myself wanting to do something to "study" for english but having no idea what to do. Anyone here who's taken/is taking HL english and is achieving high marks? What do you do (unless you happen to be…

Hello guys, so I got a 5 (nearly a 6 as suggested by my teacher) in my HL English L&L for my Y1 final exam, but I am super worried cuz I need at least a solid 6 for English, since my other HLs are Economics and Chemistry which I am getting a 6 and a 5 respectively. I need a total HL points of 18, so I am aiming for a 6-7 in English, 6 in Economics and hopefully a 6 in Chemistry too. But for now, can anyone suggest how can I ace my internal assessments cuz I heard that for a 7 in English you need very strong IAs? We did one FOA already, I got a 6, any tips for getting a 7? (I am doing my next one on textual bias) My teacher hasn't really explained anything about the IO…

Hi, so today i picked my IB subjecs. I chose English Language & Literature HL, French SL,Geo SL, Physics HL,Math HL, and Music SL. However i was relatively weary about this choice, since i have never really been great at English or liked it very much; i dont know how i managed to get an A in both language and literature at GCSE. On the other hand, Geography is a subject i love and find fascinating, however only got a B at GCSE (i was predicted an A* throughout the year). So my question is - should i move my English down to SL and Geo up to HL? How much more difficult is HL Lang Lit vs SL, and the same goes for Geography

I've decided to base my EE on Language and literature. The two books I've picked is The Catcher in the Rye and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. However, I am having a difficult time forming and EE question. My EE advisor suggested basing my EE on how The perks of being a Wallflower is a modern version of The catcher in the Rye, but we are afraid that the EE will go off the Lang and lit area and.focus more on culture. Please do give your thoughts on this idea and/or suggest a better question. Your help is very much appreciated, Thanks

Hey guys, So I've decided to go with question 6 of the prescribed questions which is, "How has the text borrowed from other texts, and with what effects?". I recently found out in a youtube video that many disney movies are adapted from other texts and novels. so I thought of doing my WT 2 on how the disney movie Peter pan is adapted from J.M Barrie's The boy who wouldn't grow up. However I was wondering if this topic is actually doable cause it involves a novel that was not studied as part of our syllabus. I would really appreciate the help. Thanks

I'm not sure if anyone's doing this book but i'm basing my IOP on "The English Teacher" by R.K Narayan focusing on the effect of language in the book or the portrayal of Indian culture and stereotypes in the book. I don't want to g the analytical way because that's what i did the past two times so any one have any ideas for presenting it in a creative way? Thanks

Our english teacher told us that the audience's reaction to our presentation will also be an important part of our grade. So our teacher will deduct points from our gades if he notices people sleeping or looking disinterested. Do you guys know how to make an audience full of teenagers actually look interested during a presentation ?

Hello everyone, I'm supposed to write a written task 2 for IB, and the book that I chose to go with it was 'The things they carried' by Tim O'Brien. I chose question 1 'How could the text be read and interpreted differently by 2 different readers?', and I've sent my teacher a rough outline. My idea was to write an essay that compares the way an American and a Vietnamese reader would interprete the text during the Vietnamese war. However, my teacher said that it would beimprobable as TTTC was written after the Vietnamese war. Now my question to you is; how do I reason my way out of this problem?

I have to write a written task in German A Language and Literature. I decided to defend the bavarian dialect, based on an opinion piece offending this dialect. By sticking to the third or fourth question (How and why is a social group represented in a particular way? Or. Which social groups are marginalized, excluded or silenced within the text?). But since I am bavarian myself, I am unnerved by the possibility of my piece being an opinion piece, since it could sound like I'm defending my culture, which I will indirectly do. However, if I use concrete evidence to back up my claims, would it be a good idea? Or is the risk of me missing the point of the actual topic too hig…

Hi! I am currently planning my RQ for my EE in Lang & Lit. I want to write an essay on something along the lines of "the use of humour/satire in The Simpson's & Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream". However, I am confused on how I should frame my research question as what I have right now seems very vague. Are there any specific topics I could explore more in depth that are common both of these works? As well, is this a suffiecent topic? P.S. I am pretty sure this would be a Category 3 Essay - and the guidelines states that the essay should have "textual analysis" and have reference to a "cultural context". I am not sure to what this would mean..

But the problem is I cannot decide my primary text, especially for the 19th century part. Any suggestion? Thank you in advance

Hello everyone! I'm a senior who is in Spanish SL and will be taking the test. Do you guys have any resources you have to recommend for some reviewing? I know that there really isn't much to "review" per say, but any type of material that can help me with grammar or vocabulary would be great! Also, for paper 2, we will be writing two essays in 90 minutes. It says the first one has to be 250-400 and the other 150-250. Umm... are we supposed to count the words as we write? That seems really time consuming for me since I'm a slow test taker. Basically, are we expected to count how many words we write until we reach the minimum? I know it doesn't seem like a big deal, but as …

Hi everyone! I'm currently in the last trimester of IB1 and I have to drop one of my HLs by the end of this year (as I really don't want to keep 4 of them). Right now, it's looking like English L/L will be the one I'll drop (as it's my worst grade + I'm not good at languages + I only like it 'cause of my teacher). We've already studied a Paper 2 book in our HL classes and I now have a question about the exams next year (final IB ones). In Paper 2, do I HAVE TO write about the novels SL has studied (in our case that would be Chronicle Of a Death Foretold and The Great Gatsby) or can I choose our third HL-only book (even though I would be taking the SL exam)…

Hello fellow IB students, IOP presentations start in a couple of weeks for my class and I am having a hard time thinking of a topic. How do you make an IOP topic? I don't understand what the formula is. My english teacher and almost every source on the internet says it's a "presentation where you let your creativity flow" and I have no idea what that means. Everyone else seems to get it instantly but I just don't understand it at all. My working topic right now is something to do with allusions. How does Shakespeare's use of allusion affect X in merchant of venice. But when I look at other peoples topics they're all over the place in format. Some are talking about broad things like the use of letters in Pride and Prejudice but others are using literary features like motifs. What am I supposed to b…

Now consider an IA or EE, wherein the files are checked for plagarism, but FOA is supposedly marked by the teacher, so isnt giving a speech from the internet accounted as academic dishonesty? If not, or if yes, Let me know when the help of internet regards as academic dishonesty for FURTHER ORAL ACTIVITES, I dont want to be in trouble!! Hey everybody, I am currently doing HL for English Language and Literature, and I unsure about a facet of the Critical Response. I am writing about Schindler's List, and why the movie shows that while most Nazis were morally lacking, some, like Schindler, were actually morally good. Would it be appreciated if I added a short excerpt from my text (the screenplay of Schindler's List) in front of my CT? The official IB site says that it is allowed here, and it is also done in the sample given on that webpage. However, when I handed in an early version to my teacher for checking, she said that adding an excerpt isn't appreciated anymore, and that I am not supposed t…

I'm having extreme difficulties in coming up with an IOP topic. I'm doing The Merchant of Venice, but any idea I come up with can't be supported or is just plain dumb. I've been reading countless other threads on this, and I found someone who said you can look at characters through a framework. His example was looking at Shylocke as a marxist; is something like this a good topic? I'd imagine you'd be able to find some evidence to support it but it would have to be taken out of context since Shakespeare couldn't possibly have been trying to achieve this. How do you choose a good topic? What am I supposed to be looking for?

Hello. I have a few questions I would like to ask about my upcoming IOC and IOP in late March. I asked these questions to my teacher but she didn't seem 100% sure. 1. Can we bring as many notes as we want into the PREPARATION room, but only take in 1 A4 paper into the RECORDING room? 2. How many notes can we bring in for our IOP? 3. Is it okay if our IOC is relatively short, even 5 minutes long? (I don't aim to get a 7 in self taught, I just want to pass, but I am really worried about this because when practicing with my extracts I could only get to 5 minutes on most of them, will this be enough to pass?) 4. What happens if you simply read off your not…

Hi Everyone, I've been given an assessment for pre-IB (year 10) English. I am to write a reflective statement (400-500 words) after an in-class discussion on our book - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon. The task sheet asks me: How was your understanding of cultural and contextual considerations of the work developed through the interactive oral? Could someone please explain what it means my 'cultural and contextual considerations', and how I should go about writing the reflective statement? I've attached the task sheet for reference. Thanks, George Task 1 - Book Reflection Task Sheet.docx

Hello! I have one small question at heart. For my HL Written Task 2 I have picked the following prescribed essay question: If the text had been written in a different time or place or language or for a different audience, how and why might it differ? I'm going to connect this task to a novel written in the 21st century, that my class have been studying in class. Of course, there are connections between the novel's content and global/societal/environmental issues highly relevant to the 21st century, which could explain why the literary text is written exactly the way it was. My idea for the prescribed essay question is to write about how and why the novel w…

Hi, I'm in desperate need of help with my written task. I need to write my WT for part 1, and I've thought about pretending to be a politician and write a speech about animal rights, where I would try to use my language as effectively as possible to make the audience believe in me. Does this sound like an acceptable idea? We've had language and politics as a topic in class so I've therefore tried to connect it to that.

Hey guys, I'm taking the english langlit high level course and I'm currently having some trouble scoring a high mark on written task 2. Most people in my class chose different text types to analyse such as advertisements, articles, graphic novels and I chose a song. So I am currently writing my Written Task 1, which is the only type SL students have to write and submit. As I know one can write the WT about the books they have read during their course, or about a social issue. Is this correct? Can I write an opinion column about woman rights of a certain country? Or is it a must to write the WT in connection to the books? If I am writing the Written Task linked to one of the books, can I write from one of the 4 books? or only part 4 books? Thank you so much!
