Hi! My english teacher is making us do many passages in part 4. We are a class of 9 students and he is making us pickup chits with passages. He gave us 15 chits for an English Lang & Lit SL batch. Its just a pain to study all that and the curriculum document says we should do some 6 or 7 passages minimum. Do all teachers follow the minimum requirement or they do more passages than required? Thats so bad for students. Please help me so i can tell him.

Hello guys! So I'm low-key stressing out right now because they want us to have a couple of ideas for our extended essay after the holidays. I've been thinking a bit about doing it on English. The problem is that the books I would want to do it on (Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) are REALLY famous. Hence, I suspect that I wouldn't be able to come up with anything new and unique about them. Personally, I wouldn't mind, but I wanted to ask you guys if this is a bad idea. Would I get marked down if the entire essay consisted exploring different interpretations of the books (which aren't my own) but citing them etc. etc. (I.e. would my EE be vie…

Hello guys! At our school, they want us to begin to come up with Extended Essay ideas now. I really have no idea what I want to write about (I don't even know what subject I want to do it on tbh). Either way, as of right now, english is my favourite subject. I'm absolutely in love with Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and I would love to explore it in my Extended Essay (of course I would have to find a topic question first). Something I read that made me a bit worried was that "all of the things to say about Alice in Wonderland have already been said". I was just wondering if this would be an issue? Contrary, I've also heard people say that you really don't…

So I am a little confused how I demonstrate in my writing how meaning is created. For example, there may be a rapper singing about his identity and uses various techniques. I think I can spot them but how should I write about them? I find it's a very important part because it is judged in many marking criteria from the FOA to the WT to the EE. Help please!

So I decided to write a letter from the perspective of a Jewish refugee who moved to England during WWII. My teacher said I might have to reconsider the perspective because I'm pretending to be Jewish and writing a letter in English, when I would most likely be writing in German. If I state in my rationale that I have intended for the text to have originally been written in German and my text is a translation, would this solve my problem? I don't know if this would work since it might be not authentic enough or something.

Hey everyone, I'm doing a WT1 on 1984. It's a speech by Big Brother, which takes place before the Revolution, so during the time of "capitalists with top hats" and all that. The problem is, I don't know how to show knowledge about the book in this task. BB wouldn't be telling citizens that he plans to ban sex and turn children against adults, making all citizens slaves of the Party etc. He'd probably give a very persuasive and positive speech telling them they'll be equals and all. If I do that, how can I relate it to the content of the book, as BB's version of the future will be very different than the time period which takes place in 1984? How can I show kno…

Hi, so I need help with my essay topic question for IB English! I was just wondering are these good questions? A DOLL’S HOUSE How does the playwright use stage directions in order to convey a character’s emotions? What role does the symbol of a doll play in the work? What affect did Nora’s character have on women in society? ANTIGONE How does the aspect of plot over character have an impact on the play? What role does the symbol of the bride of death play in the work? Also if anyone can tell me which character in Antigone plays the most significant role that would be much appreciated!

Ok, so I have my Written Task 1 assignment, and I am thinking of either doing a blog or a magazine article. The problem is that I have to list my task in APA-format (as required by my school), so I was wondering if I should list the sources in APA as I would have listed the sources if I was writing a regular essay (using brackets inside the text itself and so on)? I feel that this would look very wrong, but then my teacher said that we had to use the APA format.

Hey guys, In Lang Lit we just got our first written task assigned and I wanted to do language and gender. I wanted to write a letter to the president-elect about his discrimination and misogyny, but my teacher says that there is no language in there. I just wanted to write a letter to Trump explaining his discrimination. So, how can I incorporate language into this? Should I talk not only about what he has said, but also his actions and body language and his tone of voice while he is saying those things? Like how he casually passed the p***y grabbing remarks off as locker room banter as if it were normal to say such things? I really need help here. The written task …

Hey guys, How do you go about preparing for english lang&lit exams? I just had my exams and got a mark for the paper 1 lang&lit that is well below what I usually get on paper 1 practices. The main problem with my essay was that I seem to not understand the purpose of the text. The purpose that I sometimes write it usually almost right, but not quite. Is there any way to improve my text understanding, especially with the purpose of the text? Thanks Also, as I am applying to uni next semester, which is end of this year, do these y12 final exams play a huge role in y13 predicted grades? Hello everyone! For a while now, I've been considering switching up to HL English L/L (and droping Geo to SL as that is a subject I hate incredibly much). I've been talking to my classmates and friends and they say that english HL is really difficult to score well in and that it isn't worth it (as Geo apparently is a lot easier to acheive high marks in). I talked to my english teacher about it and he said I should definitely do it, but since english isn't my first language and people who have english as their mothertongue say it's difficult I've just been getting a bit nervous. When I learn languages, I quickly understand how the language works and all that. However, I never have enough vocab because I just can't manage to keep it in my head. So what I need is a way of memorizing vocab that is fast and not too tiring to the brain. Please don't tell me to listen to it, it works a bit better than reading it many times but it is still not effective. I currently take memory supplements. Just an end note, I see I have a problem whenever I have to memorize anything by heart which affects my exam grades. "Uh, what's tan60 and cos45 again? And how do you test for carbon dioxide?" are common questions that I can't answer as they rely …

Hey guys! For the paper 2 comparative (HL student here), is it better to study two or three texts in preparation for the exam? I'm thinking of Great Gatsby vs A Streetcar Named Desire but I don't know if I should also study Master Harold and the Boys IN CASE it would be better suited to the paper 2 questions on the exam. Also, I really struggle with the Paper 2 as I've been consistently getting low 5s with the practice papers. I would really want some help with the written task 1 that is due next week in English A. I'm still not certain how it is supposed to be written, but I have a small idea on how it should be structured. My question is then; could I write a speech/a respond about my own opinions from what a politicians once said about the refugees and how we should open up our hearts and take in more refugees to our country? Or is it wrong? Please help!

I'm going to the IB diploma program and my teacher gave us a deadline to finish the written task 1 in English A until next week, but I still don't understand how it is supposed to be written. I was thinking about writing a speech on how JFK influenced the society after his death or have i misunderstood everything? My teacher dosen't explain in a way that we students understand, so my question is; can I choose to write anything that I want? How can the use of persuasive language in a political speech be included in this? What am I suppose to do? Thankful for an answer, please!

Hey guys! So today our teacher told us that we will have our first FOA fairly soon, and he told us we would do ours on like analysing a video, text, advertisment or something like that. He said it in general could be a bit tricky to talk about a static imagine for 10 minutes but I directly thought of my favourite band's (Nirvana) album cover. He doesn't exactly seem to 100% know what he's talking about so I thought I could ask a couple of questions here 1. Is it okay to do my FOA on an album cover and to analyse it even though it only has 2 words (the album title) 2. Am I allowed to use background knowledge to explain some of the items o…

Hey guys, so I just started the IB like 2 weeks ago. I'm taking Lit Lang and we've been told to get a primary text to class (I'm guessing it's for the FOA but I'm not entirely sure). Our topic at the moment is Language and Gender, so do you guys have any suggestions on what text/source to choose? Hi guys! I've just entered the IB DP1 programme, and I am taking English Lang & Lit HL. Anyway, I was wondering wether you guys could share some insight on the subject and give some tips on how to score well in it. PS. Hello everyone! I am writing my WT 1 for English L&L and have choosen the article "Blandinavia" (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-362369/Blandinavia.html), but I have some issues finding my angle. The article is essentialy about a brit visiting norway and explaining how it is seemingly perfect, but bornig and the poeple look unhappy. I was considering writing a diary entry from a norweagians perspective, or about how we need contrast to appretiate the good things and be happy. This is just some ideas, any suggestions would be amazing! I really need a 7... Thank you, I will be eternally grateful!

Hey! So i'm in going into my second year of IB soon and i'm considerably stressed out to the point of going insane. My school offers own language study (but as a self taught for standard level students). So I'm in a dutch international school but I am native Danish and decided to choose danish as a Language A SL (self taught), the problem is we have a 'teacher' who knows the basics of own language course, but that's it. Her explanations aren't the most helpful to say the least and i am now left with no works picked out from my prescribed author list! So I just wanted ask if anyone else had same problems and how they dealt with them and hopefully some fellow danish…

Okay so I'm having a summative, Mock IOC of sorts tomorrow. My English Language & Literature HL teacher is the most pedantic, and cruel marker. Most of the class doesn't score above a 3/7 on most assessments (meaning most of us are failing), and the highest I've ever received from him was 5/7, and I think he was just in a good mood. So hoping that maybe I can achieve that most godly of achievements, and score 5 on this IOC I was wondering how I should approach in order to get the best possible score?
