Hey, So I am doing my FOA for part 2 (SL) in some time, and well, I am unsure as to how to achieve near full marks in criterion A. It just looks like gibberish to me. So, what do I have to do to achieve 9-10/10 in this criterion? Our teacher hasn't really gone through it that well Thanks!

Hello I'm really stuck on studying for L&L paper 1 right now. I just don't know what I could possibly do to get a good mark on it. I don't know how to study for it and our teacher is terrible to put it frankly. How is everyone preparing for the English Language and Literature paper 1 exam? What resources would be helpful? Thank you in advance. Any input is appreciated considering I have my exams in a week.

There are several questions in Paper 2 past papers about technique. By technique do they only mean stylistic features like similes, metaphors etc. or in general including tone, atmosphere, setting, narrator and all that? So far I have thought it was the second one but because exams are coming up I wanted to be sure

Hello, I'm really curious as to anyone's experiences in how their IOCs & Written Tasks for English Lang Lit A have been moderated. Did your marks go up/down? Were you disappointed/happy about them? Were they the tipping points between the grade boundary of (x-1) and x? Were your teacher's predicted grades for them close to what they have been moderated towards? Thanks, Looking forward to hearing all your answers!

Hi! I am to find a research question and topic for my Written Task 2 on Part 1 - Language in a Cultural context. I have no idea what to write it on. We've read Persepolis, A Doll's House and Pygmalion so far. My favorite books are Perks of Being a Wallflower, Fault in Our Stars, Wonder, etc... I've considered: "To what extent does society exclude women of lower class from their individual freedom in Pygmalion?"; yet not sure whether or not I will be able to write 800-1000 words on this Any ideas?

Hey, I know that there is another topic (that is pinned) that has tips for the FOA, but I was just wondering how exactly do you show understanding of Part 1? (Criterion A) I understand the whole analysis part, but I don't want my presentation to be boring as I feel like my mark could possibly suffer. I don't exactly want to say "The author does x, and as such readers are positioned to feel y?" How have you guys (people who have done part 1 FOA) gotten good marks? Thanks

I have been unable to sleep for the last weeks because I submitted a wrong file that was not properly referenced and the footnotes were incomplete, and I should have put a footnote after a paragraph but didn't, though I did include it in the bibliography. the task is already authorized by my coordinator and I want to commit sucide because I have put too much effort in every single task and how this ... 😭

So I have my English exam in two parts in two days. I haven't started studying for this exam as Biology is more stressful. But I don't understand how I'm supposed to study for a commentary and an essay. Should I try looking at examples of a passage and then write a commentary/ essay on that topic, or what?

I had uploaded my wt1, but then made some final changes, it was. 20 word difference, maximum, and then replaced it, and consequently modiefied the coversheet to reflect these changes. However, I uploaded the old file by mistake, but the coversheed does show te changes. My coordinator already authorized it. Can we write to the IB to change it? (also, the minor changes i did do mean a öot in the context of the task)

Hi! I am currently writing my last WT1, and I decided to write a speech. It is inspired by women’s day (8th of March) and women’s rights, and the one giving the speech is the feminist; Beyoncé Knowles. I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on how to write a good speech? And also if you have any suggestions for things to include in my speech? I always love to get others idea whenever I am writing, because other people often have other ideas than the ones I have All help is appreciated! - K

Ok guys, so what do you think is a good format for an IOC? Im doing mine on a short story For short stories, we are given only a certain extract, so that kind of limits the scope I can go about them. How often can I go beyond the selected extract of the same short story? Moreover, how often can I relate this short story to other short stories? Is this considered a good format btw: Intro Purpose Mood Tone Characterization 2-3 Themes 3-5 literary devices Relating to other short stories

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! After taking a gap year between year 11 and 12 (yes, I realise now that it was a stupid idea), I have come back to my school to find that they no longer offer SL Literature at my school and only SL Language and Literature. If there is anyone that is able to give me any information at all about this subject, anything at all, I would be grateful for you help. Any information you deem useful or necessary, even just about the subject requirements themselves. Thanks in advance!!

My English exam is in about 12 days and we'll be writing a paper 2 on The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende and either Hamlet or Atonement by Ian McEwan. (It's a comparison). Recently, in class we've started practicing proper thesis formation for the paper twos based on past year prompts and applying them to the novels we've studied. However, I'm having a difficult time understanding how to figure out the "technique used in the novel" with the "purpose of the novel" and link them to form a proper thesis. It's a little demotivating, to be completely honest. Anyways, if anyone has any tips on what to do, how to improve, anything would be appreciated. Thank you!

How to improve my Essay skills?

Hei, people. I'm in need of a lot of advice about HL English essays. My mark in English is okay (low 5), but its been like that for the past 2 years of IB for me. I've gone to extra help with my teacher and asked her many times how can I improve on my skills. She explains it well, and I understand, but then when I go and write my essay, I just get a low 5 again. I've read sample essays to get an idea, those weren't much help. I've read the Course Companion book a few times and it just wasn't helpful. I even tried expanding my vocabulary to see if that would help any, but I don't think that got me anywhere. For my English midterm, I had to write an essay on a poem.…

In Hamlet (William Shakespeare) and the House of the Spirits (Isabel Allende) what kind of techniques can be used to define the role of women in both novels? I know context is a major aspect that can be argued however my teacher suggested against it to avoid the chance of straying away from the actual novels. Hamlet: Do you think allusions can be used in Hamlet? Or imagery? Or metaphors? "The fair Ophelia. -- Nymph, in thy orisons/Be all my sins remembered." "the unweeded garden" "Frailty, thy name is woman." And for the House of the Spirits: I'll be honest, plot-wise, I have a good idea of what to use. As for the links to techniques (character development, imagery…

Hey! I would like to know which books did you read for Spanish A Language and Literature. My teacher told us that it is important to have the same theme in each book and we should choose carefully. She recommends books that we already read and we don´t like. Can you put your lists here? Thanks!

i cant choose the damn books My teacher suggested comparing one lit. work originally written in english and one translated to english but i cant find 2 books that share the same theme/context. It's been over a month since the deadline and i'm still struggling to find a translated book. I thought of comparing the portrayal of women in "Beloved" by Toni Morrison and another book written in a different language. There isn't a single book out there that has a similar theme to beloved so i'm thinking of choosing another book. ( if you know any books i can compare with beloved feel free to suggest). So I was thinking of comparing 1984 and 19q4 but it's overdone i guess (is it…

Hello everyone! I'm going through the process of revising my analytical written task for English A Language and Literature HL. I decided to do it on The Great Gatsby and focus on how and why the New York elite is represented in a particular way. I used a five-paragraph structure, but without a three-part thesis statement in the introduction (which is generally advised by my teacher). I wanted to show personal engagement in the task by demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the novel and providing my own interpretations. However, I didn't get the mark I expected. In the essay, I tried to make a point about how Jay Gatsby's unrequited love for Daisy exp…

hey!!! so for our next written task 2, I have to use either Macbeth or The Scarlet Letter, and I was wondering which of the two could be spoken about more in terms of the 6 prescribed questions? How could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers If the text had been written in a different time or place or language or for a different audience, how and why might it different? How and why is a social group represented in a particular way? Which social groups are marginalized, excluded or silenced within the text? Hi there, My partner and I have decided to do our final IOP on the Hollow Men by T.S. Elliot. We haven't decided our topic as of yet though we have some ideas. What we are stuck on is how to present a poem creatively (as in not in the traditional presentation format). So far in our class for the practice IOP poems have been presented traditionally. Any ideas regarding on how you/your classmate presented the Hollow Men or presented poetry in general is much appreciated. Tips on how to do the IOP are also welcome. Thanks! (^ v ^)

Language and Literature Assessments HL: The Written Task Written Tasks 1 and 2 Students produce at least four written tasks based on material studied in the course. Students submit two of these tasks for external assessment. (20 marks for each task) Each task must be 800–1,000 words in length plus a rationale of 200–300 words. The written tasks form 20% of your grade. A written task demonstrates the student’s ability to choose an imaginative way of exploring an aspect of the material studied in the course. It must show a critical engagement with an aspect of a text or a topic. Written Task 1 on Part Four: Literature and Part Two: Language and …

Hello everybody I haven't decided on a thesis or anything for my essay, but I was wondering if I am allowed to compare the society of today to a few aspects of the book I am planning on doing: Brave New World? So, something like, how does _______ parallel to modern society? .....but better haha All the essays I have read as examples only focus on the aspect and its significance within the book, but I feel like Brave New World discusses themes that are immensely relevant to today.... am I allowed to explore this in my essay? Hi everyone! I have an FOA based on part 2 of the Lang Lit course (Language and Mass Communication) coming up, and I was wondering if it would be appropriate to base it off George Orwell's 1984? Rather than analysing the text for thematic content and symbolism and whatnot, I'd instead discuss how language is used by the government in 1984 to influence the populace, touching on things like Newspeak, doublethink, as well as the Ingsoc party slogans, and then pointing out and analysing examples of things like this in the real word, showing the wider significance of Orwell's language constructions/predictions/whatever you could call them, and I'd also discuss one of Noam …

Do you think this is a good topic? My doubts have to do with the fact that the text I will be using are articles from magazines or beauty websites... I keep seeing people writing about Shakespeare and so forth, I'm starting to think that my topic/text won't be taken seriously if its from glamour.com Thanks!

So in my IB English class we are allowed to select from three works for our IA. (Beowulf, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Frankenstein) When the teacher and I had spare time to talk outside of the classroom, we discussed the overuse of Their Eyes were Watching God and Frankenstein for the IOP and unofficially hinted that I should do Beowulf for mine for some originality points. After looking over beowulf once again, i noticed something quite intriguing. It was when the narrator discussed how the dragon gained his wealth and how the race that died from it realized that it had no true value. So I was thinking focusing on the topic of " The v…
