Sharmaine the First
I'm writing my ToK essay, and I wonder: Is using the story of Adam and Eve a good example to use when talking about neutral questions? I noticed that the exchange between Eve and the serpent would make an interesting point, but my concern is if whether or not marks could be taken off because the Bible is a religious text that not everyone believes to be true--i.e. possibly not a real life example. Anyone who cares to clear up my confusion is highly appreciated. Reply

However the only way that you can bring the Bible into the discussion of TOK is when you talk about the «act of reading the Bible» or about the literary side of the Bible. Like for instance: "When I read the bible, I realize that it is nothing more than a good tale that many people want to hear". That example right there can be considered as a real-life example. On the other hand, you cannot use the stories within the bible itself as a real life example because it's obvious (as you pointed out) that all the stories in there are FICTION. For instance: "Humans are intrinsically bad because in the bible, it says that Adam & Eva (being the first humans) bite into the forbidden apple....". This is probably the worst argument ever, simply because the story is bull****. Hence, these types of argument can NEVER be part of the TOK essay because all the stories in the bible are just big lies!!! So I guess I answered your question. You can't use the incidents happening within the story of Eve & the serpent as an example of anything. However, you can talk about the literary side of it, like how that story influences the readers..... Reply
Sharmaine the First
I'm writing on title #1: There is no such thing as a neutral question. Evaluate this statement with reference to two areas of knowledge.I was so very ready to give an offended reply, but then I saw your IB track record and I reconsidered. Thank you for your input!
