1. There is no such thing as a neutral question. Evaluate this statement with reference to two areas of knowledge.

So, hello everyone.

I have been doing an essay on the first title of the prescribed title for ToK May 2015. At the end of the statement, it is stated that we need to evaluate the statement with references to two AoKs, does it mean that we cannot use more than 2 AoKs to explain it further?

Please help.

I think that you should focus your reference on 2 AoKs, but I'm sure you can link it to another AoK if you have the chance to. I'm guessing it won't be a problem, nobody stopping you :P haha

I see. I'm afraid that it will make the essay all over the place.

Okay then, if you're hesitant then just go to your TOK teacher and ask for his/her advice :D

What?? XD

Basically you should use 2 AOKs. If you add in another AOK you're shooting yourself in the foot because it means you're not thoroughly exploring the official 2, by wasting time on a third. You won't get penalised for it officially, but by reducing the amount of writing you're doing about the main two, then you're kind of penalising yourself because you can't make as many points so probably won't score as highly, if that makes any sense.

Ideally pick two AOKs, one with a lot of neutral questions and one with very few neutral questions and then compare and contrast the hell out of them with examples (and some personal ones). Don't bother with a third.

Even when there was a question that didn't specify or suggest how many AOKs we should explore, my ToK teacher strongly recommended to stick to 2 AOKs. Usually with 3, you don't have the opportunity to delve deep enough into the analysis considering the word limit.

Good luck! :)

I see, thank you!

I recommend FOCUSING on two AOKs. You're right to be cautious of making it all over the place. I'd say focus on two, and in your thought process if another AOK kind of fits right in, you can add it. That'll keep it together. You don't have many words to work with.

Hm, thank you! Also, this question goes to you and everyone, do I have to mention my AoKs literally? Like for example, I chose Arts, do I have to say like "Arts, as an area of knowledge..." or can I just go with my RLs and stuffs?

You're welcome! And yes, especially in the introduction so they know which AOKs you'll look at. So you could say it like that in the intro. Once you mention it in the body, you can just say "In the arts..." or "With regards to the arts" or something like that. In the body you don't have to mention it's an AOK a second time.

Oh and again! Is there any minimum words? Also, how much is the words limits? 1600 words, isn't it?

Isn't it like 1200-1600? As far as I know, there is a bottom limit, too.

I am not so sure though, but my teacher said that there is no word and the max. is 1600 words. I think it would add extra point (help, someone please?) if we could reach 1200-1600 words.

I checked in an IB book - Minimum is 1200 and maximum is 1600

I was told to make it clear, you must put it in your intro. So:

  • State the prescribed title you have chosen
  • State your KQs in forms of questions in your intro
  • Then after that you could say something like "These will be explored in AOK1 and AOK2."
  • Or you could do this : I will be exploring the following: "question 1", "question 2", "question 3" in regards to AOK1 and AOK2. Or something along those lines

You really have to make it clear to the IB
