Hi, can somebody help me with my HI topic please? I want to know if this topic can be covered in around 2000 words...“To what extent did Mao’s followers use visual propaganda during the Cultural Revolution to promote idolism (1966-1967) and what were its effects on the Chinese people?”.

Is this topic too broad?? thanks!!

That sounds pretty interesting! I only wonder about the "effects on the Chinese people"... this might make it broader, but still I think it's pretty good!

If you can visualize what your parts are, and you think it be of enough cause to actually conclude something, or at least show something, then your title is good enough.

Alternately, you can grab a copy of the EE guide in the Downloads section of this website to help you. :D

Good luck!

Good luck!

It's not an EE...

But make sure you can get around 6-8 good sources to research, preferably at least 2 primary sources!

It's too broad.

There were all kinds of visual propaganda that the followers used, and since you're asking "to what extent," you will also have to consider other forms of propaganda they used in their efforts. That alone would be a very wide topic, but then you've compounded on this with 'effects on the people,' which extends the ambit of your topic even further. If you wanted to do this topic justice and do it right, there is no way that even a 4,000-word History EE would suffice to adequately cover all the bases for this topic.

I urge you to drop the 'effects' part of your RQ entirely and focus on visual propaganda. Within visual propaganda itself, focus on one particular kind of visual propaganda used effectively in comparison with the use of others.

Thanks! That's a lot of help! Would it be better if I phrased my research question to be: "To what extent did Mao's followers use propaganda posters to promote Mao idolism..."?? In which case, I will be focusing on propaganda posters alone...or is that still really broad??

I think that would work, but you'd have to be really selective and compare it with other dominant forms of visual propaganda. If after covering all that you still have a substantial amount of space left, you can add on comparisons with other kinds of (non-visual) propaganda. If you don't have space, then you can amend your RQ and make it specifically about comparing propaganda posters with other kinds of visual propaganda alone.
