Argy
How do you find the equation of a function analytically? We have to do it for an IA and everyone in my class is wondering. Okay, that was probably a hyperbole, but still.Any tips? Reply
CkyBlue
If it's an IA, I'm assuming you're doing a modelling function and you're given a set of data points. Look at the shape of the points and the curve that they form when they smoothly connect. Consider domain, range, and concavities. Now, consider the nature of the data. What context is it? Walking speeds? Population trends? The displacement of a ball being dropped or thrown? Now consider everything again. It is useful to take into account that practical data does not usually meet an "infinite y-value" nor does it sometimes as a negative x or y value (for example time or distance cannot be negative) When you ask how do you determine the equation of function analytically, I'm betting it just means you pick a type of function that tends to model the curve with respect to the limitations and nature of the data given. Then you just plug the data points into your GDC into that specific function and use regression to find your equation with its parameters, constants, whatever. Remember (if you are doing a type 2 portfolio) the best model is not one that necessarily fits through all the points, but it's the model that best fits with the nature of the data.
