Hi! I plan to write my Extended in the subject area of English (I also take HL English)
I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for a novel that I could read and write my EE about. (or 2 novels I could compare)

If it is possible, please keep these things in mind:
1. The novel(s) must originally be in English
2. My mentor does not want to see another essay about Jane Austen's Emma, Pride and Prejudice etc. Basically I'm looking for books that have not been done too many times in the past.
3. If possible, a book by a Canadian author (but not necessary)

Some books I have in mind are Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and Room by Emma Donoghue. Room is very new, so I don't think people have written EE's about it. Does anyone know if Water for Elephants is a common book choice?

Thanks a million!

To be honest, it's a lot more important you have a good topic than that you do books nobody has studied before. Those two books you found, have you thought of what you'd write about within them? Would you compare them? What would you compare? That's way more important than how commonly people write EEs about them!

Really you need to pick a book you really love, know well and are interested in - and a topic which you can say exactly the same for!

There is something to be said for not picking classics which have been over-dissected (although people still do, and with inspired topics can still do very well), but basically anything outside of the obvious range of classics is fair game. If you wouldn't find it in the Classics section of a bookshop AND recognise the name in a snap, it's probably not a classic. Austen, Shakespeare, Hardy etc. = classics. The big names, nothing else.

YOU have to find the topic/books for your EE. Not us :P
