I'm trying to write an essay on how the characters in Haruki Murakami's "The Elephant Vanishes" and Akutugawa's "Rashomon and 17 other stories" experience dissatisfaction, alienation, isolation etc etc from society. I'm kinda stuck at the moment and was would appreciate any help that could get me started. Thanks!

Try looking at symbols, objects, motifs, themes, or other elements that show dissatisfaction, alientation, and isolation in your books. How do your literary features show this? Are they the same in both books or are there differences? Are the effects of the literary elements the same or different? Why or why not? What does this say about the author, the work, or the time period in which this book was written?
Make sure you are constantly comparing and contrasting the books on this point. Do go into a little bit of detail introducing the books and explain your points, but make sure you are writing a comparison to score well. Don't do this format: "Everything about isolation/dissatisfaction in The Elephant Vanishes. Everything about isolation/dissatisfaction in Rashomon and 17 other stories. Done."
I've never read either of these books so I cannot give specific advice, but try this format. It should get you started thinking of what you can say for your essay.
