Hi everyone....so yeah, I'm extremely afraid of getting caught in plagiarism. I haven't copied anything directly or intentionally but I always read online essays and everything before I start writing my owns. And, I also always memorise my text books eg economics. In my economics commentaries most of the stuff written is almost directly from my book and also in chemistry lab reports the theory parts are from my books.

I'm kind of person who stresses a lot even if there's nothing to stress about :((( I can't even concentrate on my exams because of these stupid thoughts. Do you guys have any idea when IBO informs the student of plagiarism? Do they inform during the final exams or on July? And, how they inform? Do they inform the school or just send your a letter? And, what assignement are checked for plagiarism, coz if they are only EE and TOK then I don't have to worry much coz everything there are from own head, lol.

Please answer me asap...thanks.

You find out when you get your final results in July. The report will say "Diploma not awarded" and I guess you then have to ask your IBC why you didn't get your diploma.

For Economics commentaries I am pretty sure you don't have to worry. Only your definitions are taken from books, but still you can use quotations there. Otherwise, the theory may be taken from a book, but you apply it to a specific case study so it changes significantly.

When it comes to lab reports, I really do not know how you can be accused for plagiarism there. You have your own experiment, your approach and everything is different. Yes, you may be using theories in the conclusion/evaluation and possibly if you are writing a hypothesis section, but there is nothing else.

I wouldn't stress too much over it. I believe that the IBO is not TOO strict. For instance, in the EE you must have about 45% of work found in other sources in other to be guilty of plagiarism. This percentage is REALLY high. They do understand that you are students using theories from books. You are not alone out there. Unless you have taken something directly from somebody else, claiming that is yours, you don't have to worry about anything.

If you go to a website called www.turnitin.com, you'll find a programme? (I suppose you can call it) on that site called write check and basically you can download a variety of different packages (that are payed for) depending on how many documents you would like to check for Plagiarism. It's almost identical to the system IBO uses to check and I've been using it since I started IB and it has saved and helped me numerous times (when i didn't even realise I had Plagiarised) The packet I bought was the $25.00 one which you can submit 5 different documents 3 times each. However there are packages for one domcument, two, etc. So it's up to you. It's very useful and shows you what has been copied, which are quotes, helps with your grammar and so on :)

A girl at my school didn't get her diploma because she copied a paragraph into her English written task without citing (what a dumbass). But seriously, as long as you don't copy paragraphs or long sentences into something that is supposed to be your own work I wouldn't worry
