You do more books/texts for HL than SL, more or less. You're also technically expected to achieve a higher level of analysis. Although if you're talking about "A" then you should notice that for people such as yourself (exams May 2013 or after) then it's split into:
A Literature (harder)
A Language and Literature (easier)

Both can be taken at either SL or HL as well - and again, it's more content versus less content. Similar skills.
