Hi guys!
Like many others (hopefully), I will have an oral commentary for my self-study language A1 in march. Among the questions given by the IBO, there are several which are somewhat difficult to understand for me, hopefully you guys can explain to me what I should be focusing on and what sort of extract should I be looking for. Thank you!
- Discuss how vocabulary and other aspects of language serve to establish the voice of the poem.
=> What "other aspects of language" can we discuss here? (tone, pace, what else?)
=> What do they mean by "the voice of the poem" ? Is it the tone/mood or is it the writer's style?
- Analyse the way the selected poem can be understood as much through the musicality of its language as any description of subject or theme.
=> What is the "musicality" they are talking about?
- Discuss the ways in which the poet uses oppositions as a structural element in the slected poem.
=> What are the "oppositions" here? Should it be understood in a very limited way or in a very broad sense?
=> What do they mean by "structural element" ?

1. maybe figures of speech, syntax, phonology, connotation/vs denotation, the use of:
Verbs
Adjectives
Adverbs
Jargon
Semantic field ( words used in a specific subject)
Formality
Colloquial or formal
Archaisms
neologisms
google rhetoric for more info.
voice of the poem can be either the message conveyed in the novel (author's purpose) or the rythm of the poem
2. the musicality is the rythm, the metric a poem has. in this part perhaps you could analyze the poem's structure.
3. maybe this refers to things like irony, anithesis??
structural element?? sry no idea
i hope this helps!!

1-I think they need you to explain how the words chosen create a character of the voice of the poem. Is it a scorned woman or a depressed man, stuff like that. In this part you explain all of the vocabulary chosen and the effect and impact it creates.
2-The musicality is basically the rhythm of the poem, and the effect it has. It could be fast paced and flowing, thus depicting someone who has an excess of feelings. What does the structure tell you?
3-It could mean that maybe the poet creates contrast within the poem, whether if it's by a changing structure or by using paradigms, opposing words, etc.
I hope I was useful, and good luck with everything!

I thought musicality was also alliteration, rhyme, consonance, assonance and so on...

Hey I just noticed you are doing 2 A1 languages, does this mean you are doing a bilingual diploma? I am also doing mine in March, to be honest I have yet to see those questions anywhere but what I do is look at the criteria and make sure I meet every single one of them and to ensure that I am hitting the high end marks.

Hi guys! Thank you for your replies, I will take the advice on board. I'm doing a regular english diploma with eng/vietnamese A1 and french ab initio. Does anyone here also do self-study A1??? I'm kinda confused because they asked me to pick a 40-line passage for each of these questions and basically make a commentary for 10-15 minutes. I'm worried if I will be able to fill it up? What do you guys think? Can you "Discuss how vocabulary and other aspects of language serve to establish the voice of the poem" or "Discuss the ways in which the poet uses oppositions as a structural element in the slected poem" for 10-15 minutes? Because I will soon do my english A1 HL IOC but then we normally talk about almost everything including: diction, tone, themes, mood and other literary techniques so it doesn't really focus sharply on anything. Please help me out
