Hey!
One of the great challenges of being an IB student was for me the choice of topics.
I understand why IB does it, if there would be the same prescribed topics every year it would be tedious for examiners.
Does anyone feel the same about this?
What were the hardest choices for you?
For me the hardest choices were the history IA, the EE and the TOK presentation.

I'm an indecisive person in general... So this is always a problem. Even on exams =.=

But since the EE and the HI topics are the most open ended (you can basically do anything) I would definitely say they are the most difficult.
TOK was a challenge too but my teacher helped a little. And I didn't worry as much about TOK-- wasn't planning on staying in IB!

me too!! I'm a very indecisive person, so even choosing my IB subjects was painful to me! choosing my EE topic and TOK essay topic was very painful as well, I have no idea how many times I've changed my EE topic and switched my TOK essay title. TOK presentation topic took me some effort to choose too but it wasn't as painful. I also found it difficult to choose good topics for my Indo A1 IOP and WL.

now I'm about to self study an option topic in Physics and I'm struggling to choose a suitable option topic for me...urgh

Kind of unrelated, but in Grade 10, I had to choose between Biology and Physics SL.

I couldn't decide, so I drew paper slips out of a box.

And I got biology. :)

Unfortunately, I know it's unwise to do that for topic choices.
I'm still not really sure of my EE research question.

It's usually difficult for me to pick topics like those for an EE or IA because I'm interested in a lot of things and want to investigate them all!

With my EE, I originally wanted to do something on Russia. Then I wanted to do it in chemistry on catalyzed reactions or something like that. Then I went into a Spanish phase where I wanted to write on this Chilean novel, and then I wanted to do it on some Latin American band's music because they were like a political thing or something. Then I shifted to history and had a hard time picking a topic because I wanted to do it based on twentieth century history or a war, but didn't want to do a big cliche or overdone topic! I ended up picking deciding on my EE topic like the day before our topics were due (we had like a month to do this :P )

World lits made me mad because we had to submit three possible topics for WL1 and WL2. For WL1, I really liked my first topic. Like, a lot. But no two students in my school could have the same topic, and my teacher ended up giving it to someone else and I got stuck with my third topic which was my least favorite. Same thing happened in WL2, I was going to do it on one of Creon's speeches in Antigone but someone else got it. So I ended up analyzing a dialogue between Antigone and Ismene instead. Grrrrr /endrant

With TOK, I was only really interested in three of the titles, #2, #3, and #7. After writing #7 and #2 and hitting a brick wall after only like 400 words I switched to #3 and was able to actually do it. The presentation wasn't as bad since I was in a group and we came to a consensus relatively quickly.

I feel the easiest thing to pick was my history IA. My teacher gave us a list of ideas we could investigate and as soon as I saw this one topic I knew that's what I wanted to do it on. It was in my favorite area of history, WWII, but it wasn't cliche, not a widely-known topic, and it was just fascinating! Maybe I'm just a history nerd, but still. :P
