I have both Geography and History and I must say they pretty complement each other. At least basic understanding of modern history is essential while studying social, economic and political geography. History really helps me in my Geography HL option - especially in essays, where you have to support your arguments with case studies.
In my case it is geography that is the harder subject, mostly because our geography teacher does almost nothing on her lessons and we have to do everything by ourselves. In history you can do only with a few books. In geography it is important to know the case studies, so you have to do a lot of your own research - study about different aspects of different countries and areas, the more varied, the better.
As for geography essays, I haven't seen any model geography essays and my teacher never told me how to really do that. The only thing I know for sure is that you have to use case studies. So I play it by ear, with quite good results. Just show your arguments and support them with some evidence - the same is in history.

IB History is HARD that's why I didn't take it . . . but from what I hear it looks better than Geography as it requires more analytic skills though this did come from a history teacher so . . . I would go for geography if I were you, seems easier and straight-forward
