Hi!

So, we just got our results back. The thing is that I got two 7s for Paper 1 and 2 (P1 55/60, P2 28/30) and I got 22/30 for my IA at English B HL. 22 was the minimum for a 6.

So now Im asking you, has anyone ever filed an appeal? How did it turn out? Do you suggest I go for it or no?

Thanks :)

How did you figure out the breakdown of your subject grade? I wanted to find out as well...

And someone from last year applied to get her papers re-checked for Bio. Her grade didn't change.

You can have your exams remarked but as far as I know your IAs can not be changed (If I'm wrong someone please correct me. I'm guessing your overall grade is a 6 so the only way you could improve your grade is if you remarked you exams and those marks went up, but as you exam results are already very high theres not as much chance of that happening simply because there arn't that many areas you would be able to gain an extra point. Your overall percentage i think is 86.6 so I'm not sure what this years cut offs are (though I assume you may have them as you know the IA cut off) but depending on how close you are would really depend whether its worth it.

But the thing you are most concerned about, you IA mark, I don't think you can change so your chances of improving your grade are slim.

You figure out your subject grade breakdown by contacting your IBC. Component scores have already been released to them.

For bio a remark may not be worth it because bio is not very subjective and the examiners follows a markscheme that tells you what specifically to awards marks for for every written response question. Paper 1 can't be remarked because it's a MCQ paper, and your IAs can't be remarked either. The only things that can be remarked are papers 2 and 3.

To the OP: Have you looked at the boundaries yet? If you're one or two marks away I suggest remarking since English is subjective. If you're further than that, then I think it's risky and it's best if you just accept what you have right now.

Hi!

Thanks.

However, does anyone know whether anything can be done regarding IA grades? Because I also had relatively bad predicted grades as the teacher was very strict, but then I did get quite good grades for P1 and P2 but IA was essentially assessed by the teacher which in my opinion was a bit unfair.

Thanks again

The IAs are initially assessed by you teachers, but then a sample are sent away to be moderated. Usually teachers are too easy and everyones grades are scaled down, or in you case when a teacher marks strictly they either stay the same or scaled up. Either way its a fair way to grade and you get the results you deserve no matter how your personal teacher marks. You can't change your IA marks because of this system and your just going to have to accept them for what they are.

scored a 76% in chemistry..does anyone know the exact boundary for a 7? My friend got an 83 and scored a 7, but then everyone else was lower than me, so it is hard to figure out where the 7 started. I'm sorry I think I stated earlier that the grade boundaries were out but I think it was just that in some subjects people were able to figure out how the boundary was because there was a person who got 2-3 points better than them and got a higher grade!

Forgot to mention that I am considering remarking it, so thats why it is relevant to this topic.

Ask your schools IB coordinator, he can access the mark boundaries already (might be its different timings for different schools but he should have them sooner rather than later)

Okay guys its 79-100 and 6 is from 67-78 is it risky to remark? Or unlikely it will go up 3 whole points?

An increase of 3 points is unlikely in Chemistry due to the fact that chem mark sheets are very specific and its not a very subjective subject compared to the likes of languages. However if the money is not an issue I would go for it. Also before you decide maybe look at your grade breakdowns. If it was your IAs and P1 which were the assessment to bring you down then I wouldn't bother because they can't change, but if its P2 and possibly P3 that let you down, then you would have a lot more chance in geting those 3 points.

Yeah I should look into that and see, but my coordinator said she doesn't have the component marks yet, any idea of when they'll be out? The thing is I already get the same credit whether its a 6 or a 7, its just gonna feel a lot better if I do get that 7 given the amount of personal tutoring I paid for in chemistry due to our school teacher not being competent enough. I guess it doesn't really change much, but the self satisfaction is something that's irreplacable. Would you say though that I am safe from lowering my grade to a 5, which is like 10 points below what I have right now?

Yeah, its not a subjective subject so i doubt you could loose that many marks even if the remarker was being a horrible person. I would be absolutely shocked and of disbelief if someone's chem result went down by 10 marks.

So you cannot do anything about IA grades? Because I was predicted a 7 for my IA in psychology and only received a 3 which is a hell of a leap! I am not even sure that it would change my grade at all but that sort of a difference is pretty significant. Then I am thinking that I might interpret the results summary wrong. But the raw mark/grade is the predicted grade that our teacher gave us right?

Does anyone know how long it takes for remarks to occur and when you hear back regarding them? I just e-mailed my IB coordinator for more details regarding how to appeal an exam.

I know the deadline for requesting "enquiries on results" (how IBO calls the remarks) is in September 1st, so I really dont think that they will be rushing to get them done

Ah, okay; thank you! I ask because my college requires all proof of IB scores to be sent in by late October, so I'm not sure if that'll be a problem.

This is late but...
You can't get individual IAs remarked, but unlike other coursework, World Literature isn't actually an IA. WIth other coursework your teacher marks it and a sample of them is moderated, with World Lit every single piece is sent off and marked seperately, so it can change if you appeal your results
Also, regarding IAs getting remarked, I initially thought it wasn't possible, but then I found out that my school was unhappy with the moderation for the Maths Studies IAs and so appealed and people's marks went up. I don't know how that works but it's probably more risky, so I'm guessing the school is unlikely to do it to help a single student go up a grade unless they're sure the moderation was unreasonable, just because if the marks go down there could be other students whose were on the borderline and so go down a grade after the remark.
