English A - Lang&Lit - Research Question

I’ll be writing a comparative character analysis of the character Sherlock Holmes in the original works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and in the BBC Production Sherlock, with particular focus on how his character has been transferred to modern day. At this point I have started going through the primary source material and I have come up with just about a research question. However, I currently have a few alternatives. Could I get some opinions on which ones you think are better?

  • To what extent has the BBC production Sherlock managed to bring the character of Sherlock Holmes into the modern day?
  • What notable changes was made to the character of Sherlock Holmes when BBC production Sherlock brought him into a modern setting from the original works?
  • What notable changes were made to the character of Sherlock Holmes when he was brought into a modern setting from the original works in BBC Sherlock?
  • To what extent has BBC Sherlock managed to retain the prominent features of the character of Sherlock Holmes when translating the original works into modern day?

While I don't have advice as to what specific question you should use, I recommend you phrase it so that you mention Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his Sherlock so that the question is more clearly related to literature. So you could write, for example: "How has Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes been adapted to the modern day in BBC Sherlock?"

And especially important is the "So what?" aspect to any research. The suggestion you got from battlescarves is a good one, but you need to be very clear WHY your are asking the question and how any answer will contribute to an appreciation of the work, either in its televised form or literary version....

Otherwise, you risk (even with the good suggestion) an essay that merely describes and catalogues .. = low score!
