Biology IA Salinities affect on Seed Germination

I have to do a IA on the germination of seeds. I have my independent variable which is salinity. I am looking at it effect on the time it takes for a seed to germinate. I have a few questions,

  1. What is a good range of concentrations?
  2. How much of the concentration should I add?
  3. What is the best way to get my concentration?
  4. Should I add the concentration to the soil and add the salinity of the soil on top, or change the salinity of the soil to a fixed point? E.g. add 1% to soil or make the soil have 1% salinity.

All help would be great! Thanks!

Hello!

I did the exact same lab last year and scored a 5/6 :) So I thought I'd have a go at answering your questions for you! The only difference in my lab was that I used sugar, instead of salt.

  1. I used the following concentrations: Distilled water, 0.125 molar, 0.25 molar, 0.5 molar and 1 molar. To be honest I had barely any results for 0.25 and up, so many a smaller range not getting quite so high would have been better, but maybe it's different for salt :)
  2. I added 10ml solution everyday, and on the first day I added 20ml to kick start the process
  3. I don't know if I've understood the question correctly but are you asking how to make up the correct concentration solution? In that case, for sugar there is a certain amount of sugar added to one litre of water that makes 1 molar solution. Then I halved this a diluted it to get 0,5 molar, and did the same with the 0.5 molar to get 0.25 molar and so on. There should be an amount of salt that you add to water to get one unit of concentration but for this, just ask your teacher :))
  4. For this question I can't give you any advice from experience. I had my seeds in cotton wool and simply added 10ml of solution to the container each day which the seeds absorbed in order to germinate!

I hope this helped you a little, and that it isn't too late! PLEASE let me know if anything is unclear or you have anymore questions because I'm happy to share my knowledge with you! I know I appreciate it when people give me a hand, so I don't mind lending one :))

Can you send me a copy of your lab please. It would help a lot.

Hi, do you by any chance have the copy of this lab? I'm looking into doing this topic this year so it would mean a lot to me if you could share this copy.

Hello, I am also doing my IA on effect of Salt on Different Seed Germination and any other information you can give me and even possibly your IA would really help me!

Hi, My IA is the same. if anyone is willing to share their IA with me I would truly appreciate it as I could do with the help.

Same! I have the same question. How did it go and are you willing to share?
